Title: Lord of the Rings
Post by: GtoRA2 on November 20, 2002, 02:16:16 PM
Have any of you seen the extended version that just came out on 4 DVDs?

I know it they have gotten allot of flack about two DVD releases, but I think it was the right way to go.

The extended version is really nice.

6 hours on how they made the movie to.

It is really good stuff if you liked the movie.

I thought the extra Gimli stuff rocked.

Haven't seen it yet, but I understand that they include a scene describing the gifts of Galadriel. I thought this was way too important to leave out of the first movie anyway. Too much in the upcoming story is tied to those gifts.

Yeah they do, and it is a very nice scene.

They spend more time with Galadriel over all.

Agreed, the extended version rocks! They did a great job overall, though the openning scene ("Concerning Hobbits") was a little stilted.  Good content, just not as seemless addition as the original release.

I get the feeling the movie was released with a "less than 3 hours" mandate.  The additional seens added too much to the movie to have been cut for any other reason (IMO).

The larger version is definately better and recomended for viewing prior to the next theatrical release.

I bough both because I am a mindless consumer drone.
I am also about to purchase the official sword of Gandalf, Glamdring, the sword of Frodo, Sting, and the Shards of Narzil.

I'd also buy the One Ring but its way to expensive.

My preciousssss....

(I'm a big LOTR fan)

Heh Animal - got The One from http://www.elbenwald.de - in stainless steel (term? Edelstahl) - I do not fancy gold so much... it's very, very nice indeed! And it looks almost like platin (which is 1500 euro/USD - the steel one is 70USD approx.)! They even have rings with "glowing" inscription - but that was a bit too much for my taste... :)

Nerds.  Go play Dungeons & Dragons or something.

I did not like the expanded Isildur death scene. I thought adding the bit about him going invisible before being killed in the river was too slow compared to the much more sudden and dramatic original version where he is just shown floating off dead with arrows in his back only moments after the attack.

Strange.. but I thought the opposite.  I liked that "The ring betrayed him" was a tad bit clearer.

Anyone figure out why they changed the nature of the defeat of sauron? In the book he gets his but kicked by a combination of Gilgilad and the two or three numeroneaon..maybe elrond and glorfindel as well..but in the movie they make it like freak chance that they got him. He was down and one of the remaining sons cut the ring off...why confuse the issue. I think the scene would have been cool with a full speed gang bang on sauron...

I'm not digging out my books, but I'm pretty sure Isildur cut off his ring in the book also.

I think they changed to make the audience think Sauron was a REALLY bad dude, so the threat of him coming back, is more scary.

I bought the Colletor Gift Set,  I wanted the Bookends since iv been entranced with the argonoth since I first read the books.

The extended version is much better overall, Also they actually edit the movie to make it complete rather than just an extra footage chapter.  Very good IMO.

One Change I like over the Books,  I like the change of having Arwen meet the company on the road to Rivendale.   It really does develope that character and Glorfindel is really a bit part anyway.   I know die hard traditionalist probably hated it,  but I felt it was a good choice.

One part I just hate.  The Testing of Galaderial.   Why in the world does her voice get all wacked out and you cant really hear the lines?    The weird affects are also a bit strange.    What a missed opertunity for the actress to really dramaticly deliver those lines.    Galaderial  was to become powerful in stature and even menacing,  Not freaky.     This scene could have used some great closeups and low angles and really captured it.

All in all,  the extended Version is the one to have, the Movies are well done overall.

Yes he did. after they had defeated sauron. not as part of a limp risted girly swing with the broken sword.

A lot of the scenes were designed for pacing reasons... and a lot of the scenes that were removed were for pacing reasons.

I like the box-set, especially the commentaries that go with the extended version.  I think there are four separate commentaries which include the main actors, then another with the director and writers and then two more commentaries.

After seeing the extended version of Apocalypse Now, I was wary about any version of any movie that has deleted scenes back in.  I can see why some of those scenes were left out.  But overall, the deleted scenes added back to LOTR do help to clarify the story a little more and overall the movie is as good as the original cut...just a bit longer.

I liked the seen where Arwen was bathing in the stream nude...as in naked...in the water.
