Actually I'm using Image-ready cause its easier, but anyway I figured out how to make a great desert camo yak skin, but the stars on the wings turn teal when I do it. I would like to know how to select that teal color or the stars and make them red again. Thanks ahead of time.

I think you're working in 8-bit mode (256 color) which has a very limited palette. Change it up to RGB (or 24-bit mode), do your work, and then save it back down to 8-bit when you're done.
If you have options for diffusion dithering when you save it back down, I'd recommend using it.

do what he said, but when u save it save as indexed color, not 8 bit. ( same thing but seem photoshop has issues w 24 bit to 8 bit conversion) i get the same problem u described.
p.s. dont forget to flatten after indexing.

looks like photoshop and image-ready are as crap at converting as ms paint
-
I do all my editing in Photoshop but do conversions with Fireworks, it does an excellent job.

I beg to differ. PhotoShop, as with any other program, will only give you good results if you use it correctly. I've never had a single instance of the program not doing what I wanted it to do.
These programs will do just about everything except think for you. Take the time to really learn them.

So does anyone know how to do it?
-
simple steps
1 . when u open your PS at start flip picture vertical /thats help a lot/. Convert picture from indexed to RGB colour scale. /i personnal make bigger size of bitmap/
2. Use color picker, to take probe of color.

3. Use magic wand to select part of surface.
4.Use crt-c and ctr-v to make separated layer with selected object. If u have som dirt on the object , use fill to replace color

5. Change skin like u need, after that remember to flat image.
6. Before u save them as BMP, convert back to Indexed colour with settings like on picture /use preview if u wish/. Use windows and 24 bits on last message window

That was VERY helpful, I just don't understand how to make a new layer (with the checkerboard background). Also, when I put the red star back onto the skin it turns teal (I am using some inverse color thing).
-
inverse means it shows the opposite colour
-
Is there any way to pick only certain colors and change them to the inverse color?
-
yes, use colour range selection , or change color or saturation on separated color or....
i sugest u to read book from your PS box, there is everything

Ya i havnt had any significant problems with colours, but i have another problem.
I am working on a RCAF Snowbirds display team P51b (no historical significance) I am working on at 1280 x 1280 pixels. But when I convert back to 256 x 256, the lettering and other smaller things look like crap. Any suggestions.

and the crappy one:

Thats gonna happen. you should rescale b4 u put in text.
My trick in photoshop is to make the canvas size 400X400 but the image 256 256, that way when u zoom, u get space to move around w/o hitting the edge. be sure not to move the imagee or it will be tricky to return the canvas to 256X256 and nor clip or alter the tiles.

Ya I figured their wasnt much i can do about it, but thanks for your help.
I really wish the writing could look as good as it does when i was making it, but oh well
It actually doesnt look too bad though, i just need to do the wings and the underside.
It would be cool to have a map full of planes in display colours, e.g. Snowbirds, Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, Red Arrows, etc.

use Adobe illustrator. If you dont have it, I'd love to have that skin in a photoshoot on Pangia (http://most-wanted.org). Send it and i'll touch it up and get some snaps.
I'm still looking for plane skins for the MA submission of pangia. Visit most-wanted.org (http://www.most-wanted.org) to participate.

I dont have Adobe Illustrator. Yet :)
I'd like to try and finish doin a Version 1 of my plane on my own, but I would really appreciate it if you could fix that text prob.
I dont think I will have much time this week to work on it, but hopefully i'll get it done by Christmas. Just need to do the wings and underside.
But if you like i can send it to you with green wings?

I'll rubber stamp the lettering on it for yas.
