My FPS took a big jump tonight in ww2ol. Only thing I did was install the 4n1s. This from AGW..
Thanks HC,
No noticable increase in WBIII (but I don't really need it in here). In WWIIOL though I saw around a 40% increase in FPS. Got rid of the stutters & lag too. Now I can finally fly in a poulated area in there.
If any of you guys play both games get these drivers helped me out.
tbird 1.13 gig
geoforce 4200 64
512 meg DDR
windows XP pro
Might as well update, might be a FPS increase in AH...Just a heads up..dont go flaming me:)

Hardcase - I got a massive boost in frame rate when I migrated from DX 8.0 to 8.1. FPS went up by 100% and I was able to switch to a higher res. That still leaves me with a game frame rate in the 60-80 range most of the time. Running an Athlon 1.2GHz and VIA 4.36 drivers. Which VIA drivers are you on now, and from which version did you migrate?
-
I got the 4.43 drivers from
http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2
Nothing new in 4.43, but the 4.42 fixes are in there and they had some driver fixes. I run win98se. Some see improvement, some dont. Always worth the try anyway and we should always update.

Need to keep up on this... my drivers are 4.37... thanx
-
Where do you look to find the driver revision? I haven't upgraded my via drivers since first installation.
-
I had 4.37 also , put the new ones in and np at all , thanks for the heads up .
-
I installed the new drivers and without tweaking saw a 3dmark3001SE score increase of 400 points. Not a massive increase, but measurable. No other tweaks done, just reboot, run 3dmark, reboot, install via drivers, reboot, go through detected new hardware, reboot, run 3dmark.
From 4287 to 4688 with athlon 1.4, 512 meg DDR, GF2 Pro.

eagl - not sure what motherboard you have, but if you're using VIA hardware it's probably an Asus. Even if it isn't, the Asus website http://www.asus.com is excellent. I have a A7V133 mobo, and when I checked the Asus website just now, it listed 4.37 as the latest VIA drivers - probably the latest applicable to that particular board, as hardcase speaks of 4.43. To get the 4.37 drivers try clicking this link:
Another thing worth considering is keeping the BIOS up to date. The Asus website also issues BIOS revisions. I can help anyone who wants to do that. I had to do it on a friend's PC because the old BIOS would not recognise the large capacity IBM GXP 40GB hard drive I put in there, but it was OK with the BIOS update.
Hardcase - I'm a little surprised that you want to keep bang up to date with the VIA drivers, but are still running W98SE. Have you considered upgrading the OS?
-
D/l'ed 1.7 version and tried it offline. I have to say that fps or stutters are no more an issue for my system (P4+Radeon). YMMV of course. Nice graphic improvements as well.
I dont like the FM. I dont know if AH's one is better or not, the only thing I know is that I like a demanding FM. I dont have fun if I know that my opponent (and me) can loop and/or turn forever with a 90deg bank with full stick deflection without stall problems.
I prefer arenas where players have to watch carefully their E-state. Anyway, 1.7 looks like a BIG improvement.

Beetle,
I have an ABIT KR7A-RAID.
-
eagl - rgr that. I went first to the Abit website http://www.abit.com but it wasn't over helpful, but never mind. I then had a poke around for VIA drivers and came up with this: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2 -doh! just realised that this is the same link as Hardcase's link.
On the board you have, there is more than one chipset that might be used. You need to know the chipset when choosing the correct drivers. The above link claims to furnish chipset drivers for all VIA chipset drivers, so I suggest double checking before installing. Or check with Funked - he would know for sure.
The Abit boards are good, and that would be my 2nd choice. But I like the support provided by Asus.
-
Are these motherboard drivers that you all are talking about, or vid card drivers?
-
Eagl, chances are you have the "normal" setup...
AMD north bridge, VIA south bridge... VIA 4in1s are like the Detonator drivers... takes care of many revisions of hardware in one driver package.
If you are suffering system problems, or it's slower than you think it should be, download those drivers from viaarena.com (click driver link)...
If you don't, these drivers prolly won't do much... but you can give 'em a shot.
Mickey- motherboard.

Motherboard (VIA based) chipset drivers.
-
It's a KT266A based board.
I tried the new 4 in 1 drivers and got a little 3DMark speedup, and I have a decent bios now so I won't mess with that. I can't mess with the BIOS much because with a RAID setup I might lose my hard drives if the BIOS messes with the RAID bios as well.

I will run win98se as long as it is as stable for me as it is now. Once you get it tweaked correctly the OS is perfect for gaming.
I run a
xp2100
asus a7v333
1 gig of 2700 mem
leadtek geforce 4 128 meg
40 gig ata 100 Seagate
Sony DVD CD Rom(RW is on the 1.3 amd)
19" Sony

Eagl, you realize that increase is ~10% of your FPS.

I'm with Hardcase.... 98 is a better OS for gaming than 2000 or XP.
-SW
-
HC,
Sure, 400 pts is 10% increase but it's not of FPS, it's of a composite score in 3dmark so it's not exactly a 10% FPS increase. I've gotten bigger increases by adding 5 mhz to my FSB or 30 mhz to my vid card ;)
-
Duh..you're right. Early in morning for me.

98 is a better OS for gaming than 2000 or XP.
Agreed, but I was thinking of W-Me. That's what I use for gaming, and W2000-Pro for everything else. I have two HDDs and switch between the two OS by altering the Boot sequence in the BIOS each time. It's a bit of a pain at first, but it always works. I have 512MB of SDRAM, 1.2GHz processor with SDRAM speed at 100MHz, clock multiplier = 12 ie not overclocked. A7V133 Asus board (KT133A chipset) and VIA 4.36 mobo drivers. Not the latest, but they advise only to upgrade if you're having problems, and my system is rock solid. The vid card is Elsa Gladiac Ultra GeForce 2 - frame rate in Aces High = 60-80, but drops to 30-40 - especially when there's a heavily damaged airfield in view.
-
And Windows Me is keerap....
XP is better than Me for everything.
98 is better than Me for everything too.... that was an OS that M$ never should of forced upon the public.
-SW
-
Really? What's bad about it? I've never had a single problem in over a year.
-
The whole thing... memory management was supposed to be improved, it's actually worse.. In terms of speed, it slower than 98 and has more overhead.
-SW

read the article in PC World about tech support. It was one of their questionaire things they asked ppl. The techies say that ME has caused more slowdowns at tech centers than anything. Just too many problems with it.

My wife's laptop has winme on it... It hangs more than any other non-broken computer I've ever used. I had to let her go on a business trip with it "as is" because I couldn't afford to goof up before the trip, but when she gets back I'll probably put winXP home on it. I'd use win98SE but I'd rather not re-install the whole OS and applications, so we'll start by trying a winXP upgrade (after backing everything up of course...)
I game with a well tuned and reasonably clutter-free win98SE installation. It works great and I've seen uptimes of over a week with no stability problems, but I have noticed that when hosting AH H2H for more than about 12 hours there's a chance of the computer hanging. I don't know if this is a problem with AH or win98, but I had zero problems like this before I started hosting AH H2H arenas for extended periods of time.
-
Well I am surprised. I've upgraded the PCs of about 4 different friends from 98 to W-Me, and none has reported any problems whatsoever. The only comment I would make is that in every case I was starting with a clean registry - HDD reformat, and then installation using the boot diskette then the CD. Perhaps W-Me is not so good if installed over the top of anything else?
-
Thanks for the tip!!!!
Up until now my comp would lock up everytime I would try to use Voice in AH. I updated the Via and C-Media drivers and now it works! WooHoo!
S!
<---One happy camper :D

eagl,
When hosting AH H2H, stay in your plane parked in the hangar (or anywhere for that matter). Longest I have had my H2H arena up was about 76 hrs straight since I have been parking my plane. I also used to have the game take a dump if I had stayed in the tower (guess the game doesn't have to track you if you're not out on the field of play.)
