Title: Sunday TOD - Pick your sides
Post by: Grayarea on November 24, 2002, 06:00:24 AM
Hi all,

Due to an emergency I will be running a TOD next instead of the intended CM.

Raid to Norway - 1944

Norwegians were surprised and unprepared when Nazi Germany, with its superior military might, attacked Norway on 9 April 1940. The general public, and their political leaders, had believed that Norway would be able to stay out of the second world war, just as the country had maintained its neutrality in World War I. They believed that Norway was strategically on the periphery, protected by British naval power, and thought that Norwegian neutrality was also in the interests of the warring nations on both sides.

The Norwegian neutrality proved to be of little consequence. Strategic interests led both sides to make plans which involved violations of Norwegian boundaries and operations on Norwegian territory. From mid-December 1939, both the German and Allied sides analyzed scenarios involving operations in Scandinavia.

Underground military groups were established in parallel with civilian resistance, and a prime objective was to assist in the Allied and Norwegian intelligence operations. The groups were useful in reporting the movements of German vessels and the transport of troops and material, especially in connection with the battles around the Soviet Kola peninsula.

In November 1944, Norwegian intelligence was heavily responsible for the sinking of the 41,700 tonne battleship Tirpitz in a fjord not far from Tromsø. When progress was eventually made in arming the underground Norwegian groups, often by parachute drops from Allied aircraft and supplies from the Shetland bus, the military groups became more of a problem for the Germans. When the war ended, the underground resistance forces consisted of 44,000 soldiers.

As the German collapse drew near, there was serious concern about the choice of tactics, which the occupying troops in Norway would choose. But it ended well - the German commander in chief, General Böhme, followed the capitulation orders which he had received from his superiors in Germany on 7 May, 1945. A day later, an Allied mission flew into Oslo, followed by Allied and Norwegian military detachments. In time, power was transferred back to the right hands. The Government returned home from Great Britain and on 7 June, 1945, King Haakon followed.

Hey Busher.  I'm pretty sure you know that the CM can't decide what you fly.  We will do our best to place you on your side but the rest is up to the Frame CO.

You will have to bribe, err ask them to place you in the Mossie.

No, but when I'm CO I read through these threads to see who wants to fly what.  It's good info to have.
