I actually went out and bought a game controller so that I could mess around with EASports Madden NFL football that my wife bought me last year. Now I'm looking for some stuff to put on my holiday wish list. Can anybody recommend a good First-person shooter?
There was a demo of some excellent speakers set up at CompUSA and they were using a game called "Iron"-something that looked interesting. I think the plot had something to do with a fictitious war in Europe in the 1960s. Anyway, my soldier was pinned down by sniper fire in a street but I couldn't figure out how to take out the sniper. I was on lunch break so I didn't devote too much time to figuring out how to move around, but it looked interesting.
I think someone had mentioned a game based on "Black Hawk Down". What's the title of that one and is it any good?

Operation flash point "resistance"
play it with friends, it's a blast..
-
No One Lives Forever 2

What Kanth said!
Day of Defeat is still a blast as well.
The game you saw in the store sounds like Iron Storm. I have the demo and it's OK, nothing really special I think.

Americas Army
Free.....

I've been playing Raven Shield a lot...very fun!

who uses gamepads for first person shooters? ick! Use a mouse and the classic wsad setup =]
but yes, Operation Flashpoint and Resistance (the addon) is an excellent and extremely detailed FPS. If you're looking for something gamey and fun, go for Battlefield: 1942, Day of Defeat, or Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. All are great games.

Is the full version out yet... or are you just playing the multi-player demo?

Yeah, "Iron Storm" sounds familiar. That may have been it.
What was the game that the Army was modifying to practice its squad-level ops? I remember the story coming out last year or year before, but I can't remember what sim they were using as a base program.

That would be Americas Army, no need to put it on a Christmas wish list Its a free Downloadable game. As long as you don't live in Pakistan:D http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=army_download

Unfortunately, just the demo.

I've played the MP demo a bit... but am not a big fan of quake. I'll wait for the full version to come out or co-op play on-line before getting too into that one.
It is nice though... visually.

I've played quite a few games this past month because I took up a job as a game reviewer (I get payed to play).
I'd have to go with No One Lives Forever 2, very stable and emersing, Weapons etc a bit limited, interaction with NPC (non player characters) a bit stale and repetative, but its a fun story line, very enjoyable, and clean. Snowmobiles felt like you were skating on Ice.
Iron Storm, meh.. its ok.. amazing graphics, but thats about it.
Raven Shield, amazing game, concept, attention to detail and simulated CQB (Close Quarter Battle) is very nice, only draw back its in Demo right now (not due out till Februrary of '03) and its very problem matic, and feels very raw. Net Code isn't up to what it should be, compared to a Ghost Recon-Desert shield/Island thunder. For a FPS I'd have to tell you to go with Ghost Recon for the time being, Its strong points are its multiplayer. Its single player mode is somewhat entertaining, but the AI can become somewhat predictable.
But the games I'm waiting for are more along the Lines of RPG/Space sim is Eve-Online, and in the sense for RPG/Fantastic D&D Style, Asherons Call 2 introduces new concepts in training, and the eye candy is down right incredible.
Haha Sorry didn't mean to write you a thesis :p but thats just what I've seen

Oh and there is Battlefied 1942, and I think Medal of Honor is coming out with a second version, Normandy or something along those lines. (or it Might Battlefield 1942) Anyways those are some other options. Both different, but haven't played them much.

Battlefield 1942 is a blast too. Lots of good online play, and you get to drive Shermans, mobile artillery, and submarines (in addition to destroyers, battleships, carriers, landing boats, and more).

Hey gofaster,
The game based on "Black Hawk down" is called... err "Black Hawk Down! :) It's been delayed 'till next year - but there is a multiplayer demo out! Very nice gfx (Commanche4 engine) and some innovative features like riding on a chopper along with the thrilling (scary) scenario! It developed from the Delta Force series - but has a brand new KI engine (the Taliban in the last part were really, really stupid). Looking forward for that one!
---
Iron Storm. I played the demo, wasn't too impressed. The story is quite interesting though and it might be worth a shot. Reviews say it's too hard to be fun.
---
NOLF2 (No one lives forever). Definately a highlight. Funny setup (a la Austin Powers) decent AI, lottsa gadgets (exploding Kitty), action and stealth parts. One very good single player shooter which should entertain you for some hours. Multiplayer part subpar (although it features innovative coop play)
---
Americas Army. It's free, it's very realistic, it gets a bit repetetive after some time. Great gfx & sound. Many servers up - continous updates. You can only play the "good ones" which is a flaw in my opinion.
---
James Bond: Nightfire. A must for every wanna-be 007. Old gfx engine (Halflife) but looks decent. Many Q gadgets, Bond girls and lottsa action from various films. Bad AI. A bit console like.
---
Unreal Tournament 2003. The BEST "sport-shooter" out there. Superbe gfx, adrenaline pumping action, great community. Not for the realistic, tactical games though. Too fast paced for my taste. Waiting for WW2 mods... :)
---
Battlefield 1942. Fun arcade shooter with big team aspect. Single player mode is subpar, rocks online. Very simplified vehicle control, planes are so arcade I cannot handle them... ;)
---
WW2Online. FPS if you play infantry. Great variability in gameplay. Realistic controls. Pay for play. Best if you are into armour driving!
Decent flying part.
---
Hitman 2. Not quite a shooter but very challenging gameplay. Assassination-"simulator". Quite brutal, stealth and action elements.

Been playing BF1942 a lot (new expansion pack is on the way) and just bought Iron Storm and MOH : Spearhead.
BF1942 is good but there are issues with sound cards messing up video.
Iron Storm looks good but I haven't been able to get it away from my son to play it.
Medal Of Honor: Spearhead is fun but waaay to short.
Keep waiting for Unreal and Doom to come out.

Yeah, the co-op play can be pretty fun. FFA sucks ass.

Yeah I'd have to agree with Kirin on the Unreal Tournament 2003, he describes it perfectly. Very fun...
-
Avoid the new James Bond game... This game was rushed for the movie. Looks like a game that should have been release 2 years ago.
-
How can y'all miss the greatest FPS of all time?
Half-Life!
This game is 5 years old and still sellin like hotcakes. Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat are its best mods, and there are other great mods out there for it. The story is good the game is hella long, and the interaction with NPCs is well done.
If you want to go another path with the FPS, get Halo for the PC when it comes out. You could also try Max Payne, or even Serious Sam 2. All fun games.
:D

I saw that title at CompUSA today at lunch (went back to collect some titles to research). They had a lot of copies on the shelves. On the other hand, they only had 1 copy of Iron Storm left and I almost bought it, but wanted more info about it first. I played the demo a bit in the store but I've never done a FPS game before and had no clue what I was supposed to do. A couple of guys were playing when I got there so I watched them for a bit and it looked like fun.
There were a few boxes that caught my eye and I was hoping y'all might have some opinions on them:
Tom Clancey's Ghost Recon (Game of the Year Edition)
Iron Storm
Medal of Honor: Battlefield 1942
Conflict: Desert Storm
Soldier of Forune 2: Helix
US Special Forces
I could have sworn there was a FPS game that had Mogadishu in it, but I couldn't see it right off at the store. Maybe its part of one of the games I've listed above?

Ghost Recon is my favorite but will soon be replaced by Raven Shield. Right now Raven Shield is only a demo multiplayer with the singleplayer demo release in January and the full game release in February 03. Graphics are awesome due to the use of the Unreal 3d engine.

You probably already know, but just in case, its: Medal of Honor: Allied Assault AND Battlefield: 1942. :) Two separate games

Thanks! I was going by memory and must've gotten the two titles mixed together.

Iron Storm is pretty good. The whole what if WWI never ended theme is pretty cool. Some pretty interesting weapons and graphics are superb. But like someone mentioned its a very difficult single player game. Frustrating at times but at least you don't beat it the first day you buy it like some games.
BF1942 has its good with its bad points. The aircraft flight controls and characteristics are poor, but the rest of the vehicle game play makes it very enjoyable. Lots of vehicles, guns and roles to play.
Ghost recon is actually a really good first person shooter. It lacks some of the features like BF1942 but its gameplay is smoother and more realistic. Graphics are really good as well.
Conflict Dessert storm, bought this one and was pretty dissappointed. It is too arcade gamey like for me. I liked the concept of modern late war scenario but the graphics just killed it for me.
Soldier of Fortune II is a pretty hot multiplayer game nowadays but mostly with the younger crowd. The gameplay is decent. I just haven't given that one enough of my time to form a respectable opinion.
Well thats my 2 cents worth on some of the before mentioned titles, hope it helps. As always try to get your hands on a demo of the game your interested or buy from a software store that allows returns. Nothing worse than spending 50 bucks on something and only using it once or twice. Good Luck:D

I just added the War Of Infamy mod to Ghost Recon. It's a WWII mod that is simply incredible. The missions are difficult enough for long lasting gaming. The sound effect are awesome and weapons are very realistic from all Allied and Axis countries.

I see they posted an Offical Server for WOI. I've only been able to find 1 in the last week.
