Title: Native TrackIR support for Aces High?
Post by: Revvin on November 29, 2002, 05:28:29 PM
I reposted this here as I don't know if HTC monitor the hardware forum much apart from Skuzzy's invaluable input. Does HTC plan to add native TrackIR support into Aces High? According to developers at Naturalpoint it requires a small .dll that games developers would find easy to implement into their products. Other flight sims such as IL-2, MS Flight Sim 2002 and Warbirds III will be supporting this device soon are there any plans for HTC to support this device?

!punt!

I hope TrackIR will co-operate (some day) with saved cockpit head positions in nice smooth way.

I spoke to someone at TrackIR a while ago and they said they had approached HTC, I wonder if there is any news?

It's a device that sits on top of your monitor and picks up the movement from a special ring or wand or most often used a small reflective dot placed on your glasses, forehead, mic boom or headban on your headphones. By moving your head the view can be manipulated in your sim. Although it may seem odd and beg the question "how will I see the monitor with my head turned" the way it works is it splits your monitor into area's or regions. You assign a certain ammount of movement to each region so say for example you split your monitor into 4 sections vertically 'ABCD' (could be more or less areas.

                       A              B                C             D

Moving your head to the B or C position perhaps gives you 45 degree front left and right or perhaps left and right view whilst moving your head to A or D gives you 45 degree rear left and right or a six view. Movement can be as small or large as you want.

It can be made to work in the game without support but does not work as well as if the game has a special .dll written for it. The manufacturers say this .dll is easy to write and only a small file. Games like FS2K2 use it very well, it can be used in IL-2 and Forgotten Battles will have direct support as will Warbirds III soon apparently. I've been stuck thinking about your TrackIR since I read the post this morning.

That's an interesting bit of hardware but a bit pricey to experiment with so here's some questions.

Is it usable in the game now?

Doesn't it give you a stiff neck and sore sholders after two or three hours?

I like the concept and might give it a try if it's ready for prime time.

Thanks for the information.  Now if we could just find a reasonable Head Mounded Display.:D

TrackIR 2.0 is out, with specific sim support. AH is not among them.

Yes i.e in favour of trackIR support in Aces High

BTW it does not give you a stiff neck and sour shoulders even after hours long use but you must use proper setup which is easy to find out.

If any of you have IL2 version 1.2, i made a track 25 mins long to give an idea of how i look around with it. Looking around didn't cost me any trouble whatsoever.

Think about it, it can be like that in AH as well

IL2-Forgotten Battles has dedicated trackIR support and it's suppossed to be rather amazing. No loss of centre and more control over panning, smoother etc.

IL2 - Forgotten Battles is amazing with the enhanced support.  I've posted this question about Aces 2 supporting it in the Aces 2 forum and no response there either.  My guess is that it is far down the list of priorities so they don't want to come out and say "yes it will have it".  My personal take on it is that I already have a hard time going back to normal hat switches after playing FB for a while and going into Aces.  It's so much better I can't even describe it enough here...

Would be nice if someone from HTC could tell us if it appears anywhere on the to do list for AHI or AHII, most of the work is done in regards to the mouselook already being in the sim.

OK add another Track IR user to the user request list.
And if anybody has worked out the best way to use it in AH please tell.

do you have to swivel your head or can you just shift to the side a little?  I don't like the idea of turning my head while looking out of the corner of my eye at the monitor.

Sancho the software that comes with the trackIR lets you shape the mouse axis so you can make it more or less responsive as needed anywhere on the axis. You don't need to turn your head that far to pan it right around to get a six view. In IL-2:FB which has native trackIR support (which is absolutely amazing) I use a combination of a little lean and also a small turn of my head to give me and over the shoulder view, not only does it allow me to have more precise control by not having to alter the mouse axis much but also feels quite realistic to lean slightly then look much as you would in RL.

I could tell, but then i'd have to kill you afterwards. :p

All kidding aside, imo the best way to use it in AH would be that it gets native trackIR support from the Hitech guys. So trackIR not longer functioning as a mouse emulator but completely independant from mouse movement.

I can set it up in mouse emulation mode in AH but for some reason it's jerky, totally not smooth :(

Strange thing is, i don't remember it being jerky the first time i tried trackIR with it in an older AH version. Was very fast and very smooth. So if anyone has any trackIR setup tips for AH it would be appreciated.

P.S. Cav, why are you still using that 214th prefix? hehe

DNME i agree it is too jerky in AH without the native support built in.

As for the 214th bit well you cannot alter your name on here, well you can but it would put me back to zero posts and Noob status :)
