Just got a 1/48 Do 335 scale model. I must admit, it is the coolest looking LW plane, in an ugly sort of way ;).
Well, when compared to 109 and 190, it is huge, almost twice as big. It looks very sleek and aerodynamic, except one thing : huge and thick wings.
The Do 335 concept was based on introducing second engine, but without the drag penalty. The plane speed seems to justify that, it was very fast.
Now, what are the advantages of a thick (and large area) wing ?
The wing has a rather sharp leading edge though.
In my understanding, it doesn't help the plane to be fast, but rather aid low speed maneuverability, right ? I've read on few places that Do 335 maneuverability was better than expected.

Yes, I've read the same things. I also read that the Do335 was one of the first planes with an ejection seat. There were exploding bolts that held the tail and the rear prop on that would release those things when the ejection seat was activated do that the pilot didn't become sushi...or shnitzel.
I also read that it never saw any action. Anyway, A good LW source on the web: http://warbirdsresourcegroup.org/LRG/

I also heard that the ejection seat had a design flaw which caused the unfortunate pilot trying to eject to get his arms ripped off... Eric Brown mentions this in ones of his books but he didn't know if it was just a rumour...

The absolute thickness is not the most deciding factor. The thickness ratio was normal, 14.8% in the wingroots afaik. Together with the slight sweep back angle it was quite normal.
They also planned a laminar airfoil afaik.

Laminar airfoil, wow, the thing was already fast !
By looking at it, it can be noticed that Dornier payed great attention to aerodynamicly clean airframe. Every single detail confirms it. So the wing was kind of a surprise to me ;).
Still, when I compare it to 190 or 109, the wing is proportionally huge to the fuselage.
It will be interesting to see how it performs in FB when it gets added.

There's a passage in "the big show" by French ace Pierre Clostermann about abrief encounter in 1945 between his Tempest flight and a lone Do335...the guy just left them in the dust . they only could film him extending.
I highly recommend that book btw.

In september 1944 the Erprobungskommando 335 was established in Mengen to conduct tactical development and operational testing of Do-335. Also some planes were employed to III./KG2 during spring of 1945...

Tamiya also makes a kit of the Do-335A-11:

I'd bet my first born child (no, actually, just take him....please) that HTC won't ever put the Do335 in AH, but be that as it may, I'd also give my first born child to fly it in AH.
-
The 335 would be great! It is included in CFS3 and it is a real powerhouse.
Also read it could takeoff and fly on one engine. (so what can it do with both going!?!)
In CFS3 the A-1 model does 475mph (764km/h) at 21,000 ft.
Also in CFS3 is the B-2 prototype with two 30mm cannons in the wings for bomber busting.
Good fun to have a go with in AH, un-conventional A/C might make enemy take a 2nd look, might give u enough time to turn and rip him down.

Wanted this plane in AH since I first saw it, would be GREAT although it probarly never saw any real action. It could also carry bombs internal and external.
