Title: Gonna buy a Dirt Bike
Post by: hblair on December 02, 2002, 02:36:21 PM
As some of you know, I started working out a few months ago, and it just plain sucked. Working out just doesn't appeal to me. I started brainstorming on how I could get into shape without much work. I thought back to my days of youth, the two activities I enjoyed most of all was slalom skiing and riding my old CR250. Both activities left me wore out, but after a few weeks of it I'd be in shape. SOOooooo... I'm gonna buy a dirtbike.

But I'm not sure which one to buy, and I don't have much to do right now so I figured I'd ask you dorks what you thought. It's gonna be a two-stroke. Two-stroke instant power and screaming exhaust is definitely a plus. It's not gonna be new either. I saw a '97 Kawasaki 250 in town for sale for 2200 bucks. Think I might buy it.

Thoughts?

Good idea to help you get in shape man.  It is a very physically demanding sport..and fun as hell.

If done consistently, 3 times a week or more, Curval.

Sure..like any exercise.  More fun than lifting weights IMHO.

I hate lifting weights...obviously..just look at me.  But, I play a mean game of tennis, not bad at golf...and I'm a sexual dynamo.
I try to get the latter in at LEAST 3 times a week.

That is the extent of my exercise.

Instead of a dirt bike, I suggest you run as fast as you can into a brick wall at least 3 times a day. This will simulate the beating you are about to give your "no-longer-teenage" body and save you the cost of the bike.

No need to thank me.

Guys, Apparently you haven't met me. I am one ironclad mofo. Age is just a word to me. I will conquer any hill I encounter. I am invincible. Now, let me stop typing a second so my fingers can rest..........There, that's better. Now, back to the subject, isn't there any of you old codgers who own an off road motorcycle? Wlfie, mountain bikes require pedaling, and that's too much exercise man. :p

I love the way a two stroke sounds....

Ying! Ying! Ying! Ying! (idling)

Hblair... I'd only advise getting a dirtbike for "workouts" if you feel having the use of all your limbs is not critical.

"You just want a new toy!"

"And Strong arms! You like strong arms right?"

"You'll probably kill yourself."

"I promise to get lots and lots of life insurance! PLEASE!"

"How much?"
Title: My Opinion......

If ya want a 250...Yamaha makes a great one in the YZ250. 2nd would be Hondas CR250.  3rd is Suzuki's RM250. and last but not least is the KX250 Kawasaki. I raced MX for a few years and mainly stayed on the YZ's and CR's.  CR's hit much harder than the YZ when the come on full song. It is a harder bike to ride IMO than the YZ. The 96 YZ I had was undoubtedly the best I ever rode.  The Power came on smooth and didn't jerk a knot in your ass. It also helped with arm pump. The suspension on the Yamaha was plush at stock settings as well. I had my CR's done by SHOWA and it still wasn't as good as the Yamaha. RAW power the HONDA is king. It will give you a jerk and a hang on for dear life feeling at times. It is flat fast. The others I only rode were friends. They didn't suck but weren't Yammies or Hondas. The yamaha is as fast as the honda but different ways. Just and easier bike to ride which makes you faster on the track. Both 250's will give you a work out especially if you been out of MX a while.

Now if I may also make a suggestion to you , a 125 may be the best bang for the buck. If your not to heavy (not meaning fat either) then the 125 can give you the best of both worlds. It is plenty fast and powerful. It will do probably any of the local triples ya have and will let you work the bike instead of bike working you. Working the bike makes you more confident and builds you up better than it working you. It just makes riding more enjoyable IMO.

Many guys(myself included) took off for a while from their youth and riding to try new things. And , when I got back into it a 250 was what I had to have. I broke my shoulder 1st night out on it and wasnt even riding hard. It was a freak accident caused by a simple blip to the throttle and over a burm I went. 12 feet down and a shattered collarbone and concusion later..I opted for a smaller ride. The 125 got me back going after rehab and I eventually had a 250 as well. Simply saying that a 250 is a pretty big jump right off the bat.

Have a great time...I hope you enjoy it as much as I did until I got married to 2nd wife and broke my right shoulder for the 6th time in 4 years. She was a paramedic at the time and made me give it up. (I have no regrets either)

BEST OF LUCK !!!!!!!   Pin it when ya can...and DO NOT JUMP IT JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE CAN....Practice slow and work into it......Laters:D

Hblair,

matey think about this one.  If you want to work out then a long ride in the country on a 4 stroke is gonna be your thing, heavy mutha of a mike with bags and bags of low down grunt.  See, it's not hangin on to the bike that gives you the work out, it's forcing the bike to do things it doesnt really want to do (like run over logs), the heavier the bike the more you've gotta work.....and you can do this kinda stuff at lower speeds.

If you want a adrenalin surge and a real quick work out while the hill disappears under ya then go for a 2 stroke....but be prepared to scream the nuts outta it every where you go (cos thats just the way ya have to ride em) and rebuild the engine every other sunday.  However, your work out will be more from hangin onto the thing while you scream the engine, more dynamic tension......you'll feel shrecked afterwards but mainly from acid buildup in your shoulders than a good workout.

And as DjV says, screamin around the place like a maniac = good chance of a big crash and no more AH for 6 months while the docs rebuild bits of ya.

Thanx for all the info guys. The chances of me getting buggered up are pretty low. I don't get as wild and crazy on a motorcycle as some people do. I'm not good enough to get too wild anyway. I do have a sense of fear when riding a motorcycle. :)

I used to own a 250X ,similar to this (http://www.hondamotorcycles.com/assets/images/model/model_hero_shot/atvs/2003/small/Sportrax_400EX_red.jpg)  We used to ride in a local sand pit as well as trail riding. I guarentee you will  get twice the workout on one of these as any bike. I used to end my rides drenched in sweat, arms and legs numb. Maby a bit less fun in the pits but still a  blast and better than any 2 wheeled bike on the  trails.

Ive owned both, and wouldnt consider another dirt bike over one of these.

Actually motocross is second only to rowing in terms of getting a workout.

HB, in order to get a workout on a dirt bike you need to ride often, and hard. To ride hard you have to be somewhat in shape to begin with or your just one tired arm away from a bad spill. Anyway, if you can ride hard, that means having no fear and plenty of friends to ride with. Because you will get hurt. And being alone in the boondocks would suck.

You can’t possibly not say I’m right on this one. (after you buy a bike after 30)

You will either back out of it and realize sitting in a wacky electric Toyota  seat flightsim chair you built is as fun and won’t jeopardize your ability to go to work unhurt and provide for the family, or you will get that bike and toejam yerself the first week and need to sell it. Or be stubborn and not get in shape, but get hurt really bad. Or in my case, trail ride and fill the muffler with cobs. 2 strokes want all what you ain’t got a clue you can’t give.

Lemme know how it turns out though.

Edit- I have a full setup if you want to buy them cheap. Helmet, goggles, AlpineStar boots, Thor jersey and pants, all pads, the entire deal. About $500 worth. I'll ship it FED EX free. Im that happy Im not in a body cast.

What creamo says makes sence. I used to wipe out all the time, quads and bikes, but I was 19 and clueless... I mean fearless. Many bumps, scrapes, bruises and a few spranes for my stupidity.  I doubt I would get near the workout today as I did back then basicly because im a big wussy now. Now I cant even watch Real TV without wincing.

And its not only dangerous to ride alone but no fun. I gave up dirtbikes/quads when my friends all bought street bikes and I got sick of riding by myself. So I bought one myself, and gave that up when I figured out women wouldnt ride on one of those. :)

So if you buying this for purely to get a workout then its probably not such a great idea. However, if the workout line is just an excuse ;) and all you want is a new toy to putter around on, then thats different :) However, the novelty will wear off if you havent got someone else to ride with.

Looks like the dirtbike is gonna be put on hold for a while. Christmas for the kids is gonna eat up more funds than I thought. My wad of cash is dwindling. Maybe in a few months I can afford it. Oh well. I was really wanting to crack a some bones :)
