Title: Hot rodders version of "alien"
Post by: lazs2 on December 02, 2002, 09:14:02 PM
Ever see that movie?  closed chamber heads and pop up pistons with a .585 lift cam in a 396 is bad news.

High compression pistons, small combustion chambers, and high lift/long duration camshaft = grenade.

A sixties era high performance engine and todays gasoline aren't very compatible.

Unless you have the $$$ for computer controlled engine management & fuel injection your going to break a lot of parts with this type of build.

Lazs that would be what Enzo Ferrari used to call "retirement due to oil leak".

I hope no children or pets were injured by the shrapnel.

Ya know its over when you get out and there is oil AND antifreeze both running out from under the car...

The engine is a 396 for my elky that I didn't build..  I was gonna pull it anyway cause it had a flat lobe or two and the guy who did the work was a bufoon.   The new motor is in and running fine... it is a 471 big block with 9:1 pistons and open chamber heads with a 280 cam and .530 lift.. about 460 or so hp and allmost 600 ft lbs of torque.

weazel.... knows a lot more about engines than he does about politics... and... he is correct.

I had just put in  a vintage air air conditioner when the thing blew.

You would love my HOT ROD magazine collection.

I have 90% of the issues released from mid 60s to the early 90s. I didn't buy very many in the 80s as it was more like Vans -R- Us magazine than HOT ROD.

One of these days I'll have the $$$ to build the F.I. system I designed for my Pontiac 462 SD.   <455 0.30 over>

I wish I had the original Ram Air heads, the previous owner sold them for a hundred bucks, dumb bellybutton didn't realize what he had.

I got the high nickel block.  :D

wulfie...I can't believe the new motor..  I am breaking it in and have the stock heavy duty replacement 11" diaphram clutch.. in 5 th gear  I think I felt the clutch slip when I put my foot into it at about 3 grand.... the thing is a torque monster.!

the old motor dropped a valve and it broke a piston.. the rod took out the bottom of the block before it ventilated the oil pan.  I was not reving the motor at all.. bout 3 grand when the noise started.

weazel.. the pontiac motor is a very good low end torque motor...  You can get edelbrock heads that will do very well  LOL... I quit reading hot rod in the eighties and nineties... I just started reading it again.   It's not bad and I got a years subscription for 10 bucks.

The last set of R.A. heads I priced was in 96 and they wanted $1500.00 non negotiable for the bare castings, bet they're going for $2000.00 by now.

I could build my F.I. for that much, plus add some other goodies.  ;)

Question.

Are you a liberal, or do you just think the government is all corrupt?

You have a Pontiac Super duty block?

What did it come out of?

I alwasy wanted a 73 superduty formula bird.

1974 455
Casting # (490)132

I also have a 1971 455 HO disassembled in my shed.

No....neither is for sale.  :D

I picked up both and a ratty 1977 trans Am for $900.00 in 94.

Yes, I believe our government is corrupt.

Vote Libertarian!

Throw both of the bums outta Washington.    ;)

gto... yep.. still running the richmond 6 speed I bought from you and the linkage is still stiff... positive, but stiff..

wulfie.. surprisingly... rice rockets pull up alongside and the guys are smiling and giving me thumbs up... one pulled alonside and said "is that really an ss 396?"  I said no... it was now a 471... his eyes got big and he asked "4 speed?"   I said no... "6 speed"  he rolled up his windo and pretended to hide under the dash... there are good guys everywhere.

weazel... you can get the edelbrock aluminum for about 1200 and they are complete and weigh about 70 lbs less.  you can run more compression and advance with em and they run cooler.  I lean toward libertarian also... democrats are farther from libertarian than republicans so I vote republican.

pimpjoe... never seen a spreadbore holley that I liked...  they suck.. I don't like adapters either but... even a stock quadrajet in good conditon will work well on that motor... edelbrock sells new quadrajets up to 850 cfm (I have one in 850) and they work quite well but they are pricey.
