Ok, here goes. I've been kicking this idea around in my head for a while now.
Everyone knows you can get help with 'basic' manuevers. Or some help with a basic way to 'fly' a plane. I.E. BnZ with the fast ones, turn and turn with the slow ones.
I'm no good at all with helping these people- I don't have the patience for it. If they don't know the basics, I'm not the right guy to show em.
That said, I've had a great deal of fun taking 'average' or 'good' pilots, and trying to give them the knowledge they need to become 'great' pilots.
I think there is a definate 'plateau' where you can get the help you need to get you started, but then there isn't the help readily available to get people to the 'next level' as it were.
I've been contemplating getting a number of guys together and making ourselves available for basically showing anyone who is curious how we do what we do. In other words.. someone may ask "I've recently started flying the 190A5 (for example), but I can't seem to win any fights against Spits, or La7s (or whatever).. can you show me what I need to learn?'
I've been doing it on a somewhat random basis with anyone that approaches me, but I think it would be better if there was a crew of guys that people KNEW were available to help with rather more 'advanced' stuff.
I think it might lead to some of the more uncommon planes becoming common if people weren't afraid that they'd lose some 'advantage' to Joe Newb in the la7 (or whatever). I also think it'd lead to more pilots becoming better, which would be a good thing, in my opinion.
Any of you guys have any ideas on a good way to get this started? Or possibly want to volunteer yourself as well?

Very commendable Urchin, I'd love something like that. I consider my ACM skills average, or marginally above average at best, and I'd love to keep learning. Unfortunately, I think quite a lot of the best of the best out there are quite happy with keeping their "trade secrets".
-
So here goes: I've recently started flying the 190A5, but I can't seem to win any fights against La7s...
I can't help you too much with training others, but I'd love watch some experienced 190 pilots and get some help in the 190 A-5 (or whatever 190 version). If you get a crew of trainer pilots together, please keep us updated on the BB.

Urchin,
I can put a web page on my netaces site to list those willing to help and maybe even a semi-schedule if people are willing to commit that much time. Names and email addresses of those willing to give up some time, along with what they are comfortable instructing, would be a good place to start.

your site has been the best help to me personally. I printed all flight insturctions (merge loops etc.) and carry them with me on my commute to work and read them daily. Thank you.
The Soda's air craft evaluation is a must read. IMO
I recommend that any pilot looking for a condensed version of flight ACM should read your site.
I have begun to land multi kills and this has made my game play more enjoyable.
once again Thank you.

I have recieved some 1 on 1 training from urchin in the DA. I have to say that he is a great guy and a great stick.
I Salute you Urchin for beying willing to spend time with people and teach them something.
Urchin really didnt know me from Adam, but when I asked him to help me he was more than willing. Not just for 10 or 15 mins either, I have spent hours with him in the DA. I feel like I can spend time with him anytime. All I have to do is ask. Not to mention the informative write ups on this BB.
Urchin....anything I can do to help just let me know....Duck

Hammer, I'd like that. My name in-game is Urchin. My email addresses are Urchin@3-jg2.com and Shodges1@comcast.net.
I usually play nights and weekends, but if I'm not working I'll be on any time of day.

thats a brilliant idea..
I`m absolutely pathetic at fighter tactics, due to, mainly a frame rate of 30+ and a tendency to do the one thing that is guaranteed to get me shot down :D
I can read all the books and web sites on awareness and it all goes for a ball of chalk once the fight starts
I`m sure there are Lots and lots of people like me who need a real person to "talk" them thro` all the manoeuvres that you and your website list.......
I, for one would really appreciate a "one to one" (For about 8 weeks) with a really experienced pilot :D
thanks

I wonder if HT would consider an advanced help program. I tend to drop by the TA from time to time to offer my services to help people, but few of the more "advanced" questions are asked of me. Usually the only responses I get are from people who are very new, looking for help operating the radio, or such. That's cool, best to get them started out on the right foot, but when it comes to the more advanced stuff, people seem to generally not really want to listen/want help. They simply furball in the reduced lethality of the TA thinking they are improving... it's no wonder they are furballers when they arrive in the MA.
The real skills of the advanced pilots in AH almost all revolve around SA and proper attack techniques (ie, getting yourself into the right position at the right time). Shooting skills at D500+ are not really the things to learn, if you can get yourself to D200 by proper technique and take your shot from there, you simply can't miss. I don't think a lot of people have proper appreciation for the differences in aircraft either... they think everything is a spitfire.
Good idea though guys, a for taking the time. Let me know if I can help. A truely personal touch from an experienced pilot, even 1-2 evenings worth , can improve someone 100times more than 50 hours of mindless furballing.

Hammer is going to put my email up on his site for a 'advanced' trainer.
Soda is right though- the only real 'advanced' training I can offer is a few defensive moves, and proper attack technique. However, I think that is what makes the difference between a 'good' pilot and a 'great' one.
I'm having a blast doing it, I volunteered to help a new squadmate, and I can literally SEE the improvement day to day. It is very satisfying, for me at least.

I'm pretty much where Urchin is. I have defence off pretty good, Attack no problem. Not getting killed I can show to anyone, Snapshots..? easy! But watching the film of Drex shooting down everyone in a 1 Vs 6 engagement really brough home how far I have to go. Willing to help as best I can.
Stick my mail up on the site. gatso@99thastag.com la5 and typh tactics a speciality if I had to classify some.
I'm willing to help anyone who needs the advanced basics. The realy advanced stuff is practice practice practice. Seeing it and doing it are two very different things.

I'm going to be redundant and post this several places.
I have posted a page where those willing to volunteer their time can provide some information. It is located at:
http://www.netaces.org/ahtrainers/trainer.html (http://www.netaces.org/ahtrainers/trainer.html)
Information recieved through this page will then be posted onto a page where people looking for training can go and find someone with the skills and time slots they are looking for. An example of that page is located at:
http://www.netaces.org/ahtrainers/training.html (http://www.netaces.org/ahtrainers/training.html)
My plan is to collect volunteer's info for a couple of weeks and then open the training request page around the 4th of January.
Until then, I welcome any suggestions to make this a successful venture for the AH community.

Just a thought, but whatever happened to the AH training corps. There was one at a point in time earlier in AH, they tended to spend a lot of time in the TA helping people out. I know I had one of them give me tips when I had only begun AH. I rarely see them anymore or hear anything from any of them. Did it goe the way of the do-do, or is it still out there? I think Lephturn ran it, but I rarely hear of him anymore, and I think HTC helped sponsor it a bit.

Take Urchin up on his offer for TNG. He spent some time with me in the DA and I learned a crapload. Put his tips to use today with much success!

I just learned how true that is. I am ranked last in my squad amongst those of us who do fly. When I looked at the stats, I discovered that my hit percentage is actually pretty damn high compared to the "good" pilots in our squad. Then it hit me: The difference between a good pilot and a poor pilot (me) is being able to get in a shooting position.
I would LOVE to be able to have one of you guys give me some 1 on 1 training. I mainly fly the Yak-9U (only because in it I can get away from the guys chasing me sometimes), but my first choice would be the 38. I could be on around 8-11 Central US time. yippee38@cutthroats.com

I would love to get involved in some advanced training. I know this only my second post, but I have been flying for some time now and would love some help to learn to leverage the unique attributes of each airframe. Also....where can I find this Drex 1 V 6 film?
