Right now I would say the:

ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB

From what I have read, This will even out perform the GeForce FX.

pro, and get the one built-by-ATI.  They seem to be more consistent about the HSF installation.

If I had dosh,  9700pro is   must. New Geforce is due soonish though.

I have a Gf3 Ti500 a year and a bit ago. If you get a cutting edge card you can skip a couple of generations before upgrade, especially for Aces High. I have no plans for another 6 months at least.

Best things about latest cards is running FSAA without frame rate hit.

If you can wait for the next generation of cards and find a good deal on one, a GF4 -4200 128 meg will hold you over for a while.  Best Buy used one of these as a loss-leader after Thanksgiving for $89 after rebates, so you might find other stores with really good deals on them as well.  I wouldn't spend more than $130ish since the GF4 is definately yesterday's (yesterday evening, but still definately yesterday) technology, and I'd get the 128 meg card because you can overclock the memory up to the speed of the 64 meg card memory on 99.9 percent of the 128 meg cards out there.  Do a google search for "coolbits" and use their registry hack to enable the overclocking menu that's already in the drivers.

IMHO.

Im the worlds worst about having the newest, biggest, and baddest. But is buying a ATI 9700 to replace my GFTi4600 128 mb at all practical at this point? What advantage am I going to have, especially with Aces High?  Not squeaking, just curious:D

With AH, you could get rid of some texture shimmering by going full anti-aliasing and ansiotropic filtering at 1600x1200.  That would look kickass and probably actually give you a decent framerate with a 9700 in AH.

A GF4 just can't get all three, antialiasing, ansio, and resolution, without suffering a big framerate hit.  The ATI 9700 can, but of course it costs $300.  I wouldn't personally consider it worth it upgrading from a GF4.  From a much slower card, maybe, but not from a GF4.

LoL, where did you read that? The GeForce FX will beat all there is, but it will also cost about $400. ATI will then need to release another new one to bea tthat. Its neverending.

I personally only buy Nvidia for the sole reason of drivers. ATI hasn't found a good reputation for drivers, or at least thats what most reviewers say.

I say wait untill Mid January and when NV30 is out the 9700 will drop in price and then you can choose better.

OK then. Right now I'm running a GeForce2GTS 64MB. It handles the game adequately. I get frames in the high 80's at pretty high res when I'm not in the furballs.

Now the wife wants me to pick something the boys can give me for Christmas; yeah, the money is actually siphoned from my pocket, but you know the drill.

If one is going to use a lower price point, say $200 because I just can't seeing going over that for a video card when the cards are so far ahead of the game demands already....

Pricewatch shows:

ATI RADEON 9500 PRO 128MB DDR AGP 8X TVO/DVI (Retal Box) PN#100-434102 $197 delivered.

or

Winfast Leadtek A250 TD GF4 Ti 4400 128MB DDR w/TV OUT RETAIL BOX $197 delivered.

Which is the better way to go? Or are there better choices?

Take a look at the newer MSI GF4's...
I think http://www.newegg.com has em.  Mine included TV-in/out, and over-specced ram(i.e. will overclock without actually taking the ram over-spec) for somethine like $10 more than any other card.

Not sure what you can get for ~$200 though, I got a significantly cheaper card.

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/vga/vga/pro_vga_detail.php?UID=60&MODEL=MS-8871

hmm upon further examination, that leadtek card does look pretty nice.  The only thing the MSI card has over it is the tv-in and a couple of included games.

No, it was only from 0600 to 1200 on Friday after Thanksgiving.

The number of cards was restricted at each store to about ~20.

The folks who were first in line at 9 PM on Thursday night and stayed all night long got the good deals on the video cards and the hard drives.

In short, it was a small "come on" for crazy folks.

Heh Toad...  Not just the crazy ones.  I showed up less than 30 min before store open and I got one of the cards plus the $9.99 cd burner.

LOL.

I was in small town Lincoln, Nebaraska for Thanksgiving.

Got to their only BB at 5:40 and was #550 in line. They said the line started to form at 2100 the night before. I left. :D

Toad, the 9500Pro is much faster than the Ti4400.  Heck it is faster than the Ti4600.

The 9500 Pro will probably give you a bit more life as well as it is a new product.
