Title: Burned my first CD
Post by: Ripsnort on December 03, 2002, 10:00:53 AM
Welcome to the 21st century Rip
I went with WinMX to get my feet wet. Running 56k modem sucks but the local phone company said DSL will be available *finally* in the spring of 2003. Been waiting 5 years out here for it.

Anyway, I went with a Christmas/Big Band Era CD since my grandfather was a drummer for several local "Big Bands" in Minnesota for some 40 years...and his wife (my granny) is coming to visit at X-mas...

Andrew Sisters
Bing Crosby
Glenn Miller
Nat King Cole

The quality was better than expected. Listened to it this morning enroute to work.

Thanks all for your advice in a previous thread.

Rip, did you get an internal burner and pop it in yourself?  I am pretty sure that I am getting one for the Holidays and wondered if it was a pain in the bellybutton to install at all.

Do you have a second CD-ROM or DVD drive?  Did you have to set up one as master?

Now... get one of these (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-gCxyrZlR2LG/cgi-bin/prodsearch.asp?s=0&g=62700&est=&search=MP3) and kick that red book digital habit. 200 songs on one disk! :)

My new system (built for me) has a CDRW and a DVD Mickey...Roxio software lets me create the CD's.  You just point to the directory where ya saved them, and add them to the Roxio list, then hit the "Burn" button.  Simple.  Even a redneck like me figgored it out.

...but I'm still not sure why I need a remote with my car stereo.

Yep... you burn a data CD rather than an audio one. Leave them as MP3 rather than convert to the CDA (?) format that standard CD players require.

Be careful with players that say they can play CDRW. That doesn't necessarily mean that they can play MP3.

Its easy to install a CD-RW. I bought a TEAC CD-RW back in the spring and had it running on the same IDE channel as my Pioneer slot load that died a few months later. So now I only have one CD drive (my CD-RW). I also let it run as cable select and forced it as the slave to my CD drive. Supposedly you should not have them on the same IDE channel but I don't have a choice.

I take it you have original copies of this music somewhere in the house as you wouldn't want to break any copyright laws would you? :)

You are in for another life when you get broadband ...

I'm one of those guys that don't have to have the latest and greatest in technology, I usually wait til prices drop down to a respectible level and let you fools pay too much for them, however I waited waaaaaay to long on the CDRW and the DVD player, I'll admit it!

I have a Pacific Digital CD-RW, it HAS to be set to Master drive with the jumpers, and the secondary CD-ROM I have (cheap $20 50x) HAS to be set to slave drive. Run them on my secondary IDE chain.

Cable select did funny things to it, kept rebooting the computer or popping out the drive door..

Hey SW... is your BIOS up to date?

Yes the BIOS is up to date... most CD-RWs require being master on the chain... and you have to set this manually with the jumper.

Hehe my first CD-burner (2x) did cost more than whole frigging top-end computers do now.
Sold it to my friend about 2-3 years ago, it's still working like a charm (well, slow one).

Has a mouse been out for more than 2 years yet?  I won't buy one unless its been out for 2 years since everything is overpriced on initial release (see Staga's post above for verification)...I'll let you guys pay the big bucks, that way Supply/Demand lowers the price for the $$ smart guys like me :D

you gotta love it.  I've gone completely mp3 for about a year now.
put the mp3 disk players in the jeep and the wifes volvo (about $200 installed).  we got the dvd player(dvd/cd/mp3/jpg reader) with the surround sound home theater for the tv (gave the old stereo my son).  even got the cd/mp3 boom box for work.

now when I buy a new cd I rip it to the hard drive and put the original away (basicly for a back up).

it's great for in the car. I have about 80 albums with me at all times, on 6 discs in the visor holder.  no big rack of cd's to tempt the thieves, no case taking up room, & I could basicly drive to the middle of motana without having to change a disk(much safer to push a button on the remote than to switch cd's in traffic.  with 12-14 albums per disc it works much better & cheaper than a 12 cd changer and alot easier to put in your next batch of music.

the boom box is great for work. one disc last for a 12-hour shift.  i don't have to open it up to change discs during the work day, so everything works much better there too (alot of dust, smoke, grit, & general filth at work. not a great environment for the cd's or the inside of the stereo)

the dvd player has better sound than my stereo had when played through the home stereo so thats much bettter to.

LOL Funked (Exactly the effect that I wanted)

Cpt., thats the long term plan, when the prices come down on those "new fangled" MP3 players for autos! WTG :)

the aiwa i put in the wifes car was $189 installed at 'car toys' back in february.  they've been getting cheaper.  it's a pretty cool model, instead of the detachable face, when you turn off the car the face splits in 2 peices that roll over and leave a flat black panel,  (looks alot like the dash plugs you get when you finally give up on stopping the local kids from stealing your stereo)  you can probably get one for less than 150 by now

Sandman,
I have that exact head unit in my car and I'm enjoying it.  It comes with a steering wheel remote which keeps my hands on the wheel.  The largest disk I've been able to burn is 144 rock songs on 80-minute media.  It's a little sensitive to bumps but that's it's only flaw.

Am I the only tin-eared, half deaf guy in here that can still hear a difference between the MP3 format and the CD format?

The MP3's seem to "lose" something; I guess I'd call it depth.

Try Zeppelin's "Black Dog" on both and see if it's just me.

But I still use MP3 for some stuff.

Definitely Toad. MP3 is not as good as mini-disc, and neither of them are as good as a CD. It's all about file compression; this does make it easy if you are talking about portable players though.

I have Sony's top of the range NetMD player (MZ-N1, I think). I can download MP3s and put them directly onto a minidisc through a USB cable. It also plays WMAs I think, but I primarily use MP3s. With 4 levels of compression, you can go for capacity or quality.

For my dance tracks I tend to compress the files a little, so I have a continuous noise while I jog. But when in the car, I go for 100% quality (for an MP3, that is). I have a mate who mixes dance music, and he's always sending me mini-discs with his new stuff on (not MP3). The MZ-N1 comes in very useful - kind of like having the best of MP3 and Mini-disc.

Toad, I have an HK system in my car with 12 speakers (2 subwoofs) and I'd heard about degradation of the sound...however I must admit that I didn't notice any, had Louis Armstrong cranked on the way to work today :D

ya, thats the exact one I got for my wife. it does skip some on large bumps (if you hit a pothole dead on.  but we don't much take the volvo off-roading so it almost never comes up).

on the other hand the sony in my jeep has never skipped yet

as far as quality of sound if you rip your own mp3's at a rate of 160 kbps (= to cd quality) or higher then there is no difference in sound quality.  my software that came with the audigy card will encode at 320 kbps, twice cd quality (though I see no point at recording at a higher quality than the source, just a waste of disk space).  most of the people I see who say mp3 doesn't have the sound quality either rip their own at to low a bit-rate or using a hardware or software that can't produce 16-bit sound or better.  or they download them off the net from people who ripped them at a lower rate to save bandwidth on downloads.

some of the songs that I've got off the net are of very low quality. and the volume levels vary drasticly from song to song, making putting a decent disc together harder.  (just one more reason why I go ahead and buy my own cd's and just rip them to mp3 myself. plus you can avoid that whole "you stole my inelectual property" argument)  but I do still download some of the harder to find music. (you don't see much John Prine at the local music store  )
