Last night while defending a V base I put a round into a M3 at point blank range with my Panzer, no effect, then I jump to my 7.9mm MG, and start unloading on him as he pases by me, mind you my main gun is facing away from him, he starts firing his 50 cal ans with a second my turet is totaly knocked out, and right after that my engine is toast. I can t begine to express to any of you how this so porked, first off if his gunner had been in the 50 cal I shurly would of waxed him with the MG 34 and most of the guyes in the Halftrack, second why did my 75mm round not kill him from the get go, it wwas a hit not a richoet. I realy cant see why not expecting GV's to behave like they did in rl is to much to ask in this regard. This is not an issolated incedent, this kinda of well "stuff" hapens all the time. I am not whining because I lost my gun, heck I killed 5 tanks that run, I am whining because this is just so wrong on so many levals.

My bet is next big leap in AH's history will be new damagemodel for both aerial and ground vehicles.
-
Yep it was nice when you needed a hispano 20mm or bigger to kill a tank .
-
well... i think bombs and 20mm shells should be able to kill troops as much as machine guns...:)
-
Yep its wrong other night was Panzer, m8 is sitting 50 ft from vh shooting it I spawn shoot him twice with AP, twice with HE at 100meters while useing my coaxial on him before he dies. last night was an M8 sneaking up on ostie at 400, he sees me 1 shot and Im dead.
Btw Bradys I was the panzer whose turret you knocked out, perhaps my 400 hull mg bullets softened up your armor!
lol
we should all just drive osties.
-
lol pooh, I asked HiTech once, well he responded to a thread I hasked this in, he said that Armor does not take damage and eveunatialy give, it is not like a fuel bunker. I kept going back and puting rounds into your flanks as well because I was afraid your MG would track me, I have also used MG 34's to kill tanks engines before so I was firing at u because u posed a threat, at least in the screwy reality of AH armor u did, funny how those point blank flak shots had no effect on you as well:)
BTW my neighbors want to meat the Staff at HTC and thank them for being woken up at all hours when this happens and I freak out and scream explicatives.:)
-
I was there last night as well Bradys, you got me a few times! One of my squaddies took out your turret, he had said that he was going to use his 50 cals to do it. I agree though, the damage model is so screwed its laughable. Maybe will be altered in the update, who knows.

ROFL!...soo true :D

Yep, was involved with all that to. Had some strange things happening for some reason. Had a direct shot of 3 rounds of AP 75mm into his rear engine compartment ..... nothing. while firing and solid hits of the 3 rounds, he had time to turn his turret for a frontal shot on me. One round from him dead center front where the armor is the thickest and I explode. Came back up and he was still there firing away at 2 others. They finally got him, but it took a total of 18 rounds to do it. Thought maybe he had come back up from the VH, but then realized that the VH was down the whole time and wasn't even close to another spawn point.
Not exactly sure how the damage is assest, whether it's location of hit, type of armor being hit, type of round or just plain usage of a "roll the dice" hit/miss percentage computation. But sure would like to know. Still have yet been able to kill any GV with 20mm a/c rounds, have pumped entire loadout into one, would sure like to know how the ones who can do it.

I had opportunity last night to talk with a US WW2 vet, silver star, british military cross, three purple hearts and something else I forget the name of. He led 51 missions, most of them combat (the other missions being recon). His unit suffered 300% casualy rate by the time they made it into Berlin. The man saw his share of action.
I asked him once if he had ever had any close air support, and he says once the airforce took out a bunch of panther tanks near his position - saved his live that day he figures. Quite a show he said. The planes were using bombs and rockets.
This seemed like a good place to ask the question, Can 50 caliber kill a tank? He gave a very quick and simple "No". I mentioned why I was asking and seemed OK to go a little farther with it, so I asked what about taking out the motor on a tank "Not very likely, you had to hit it in exactly the right place." he added on his own, "Now you might get one of his tracks, if you hit it just right." (I am writing this as close as I can recall his words)
He was there and this is his opinon of it. He actually saw the battles and the battle damage on the ground. I lend great credibility to his account.

Man I stopped playing with those GVs almost 2 years ago. Don't waste your time. If you want GVs play Panzer Elite or WWIIOL Or something.

Brady,
The entire GV thing has been porked from the start. I'm sure they'll eventually get around to fixing things someday. I'm probably in the minority in that all the non aviation elements seriously diminished my enjoyment of AH....I still wish we had the older FM:). I'm wating for 1.11 to try again.
Anyway, it wouldn't unrealistic for an M3 to beundamaged by a 75mm AP round thru the passenger portion of vehicle. It would go right thru without causing any realdamage except to any unlucky guy in the way. An HE shell should blow up on impact. The MG would certainly get a crew kill pretty quickly.
As for the other garbage...an ostie cant kill a PZIV that is facing it unless you get a "golden bb" that hits view slot and enters tank that way...it could damage treads or gun...remote chance. M8 has no chance either except possibly for an engine kill from a rear or flanking shot.
The truth is that the standard sherman had limited capability vs frontal armour of the PZIVh2. The short barreled 75mm just didn't have the hitting power at anything but close range. US amoured philosophy did not encourage tank vs tank combat. The US tank forces in Europe suffered almost 100% casualties of those who landed within the 1st month of the invasion. Most tanks were "recycled" at least once many two or more times. It was not uncommon for tanks to be recovered from battle fixed and sent back (often with crews of 4 or even 3) within 24-48 hours. In one instance 17 tanks were fixed and sent forward with 3 man crews for combat the next day. 16 of the 17 were out of action again by 3pm that day. US logistical capability won the war not the "quality" of our armour (or our planes for that matter).

AGREED!!! Eliminate "Aces Low" and the gv woes all disappear.

Well the hit sprite was bang on the front of the M3 as it headed down the hill toward me, he was so close that I had to back off zoom to see the whole M3.
If I did not play for rank I would certainly bag the whole GV aspect of AH.
Aftert this incedent I went and played WW2 online to relax, got im my Summa went and found a nice hull down spot covering a bridge got 4 tanks and 4 inf and rtbed... went ahhhhhhhhhhhh and went to bed.
-
If the mg34 is anything like a pintle or tripod mounted m60 the dispersion area should be about 10-15 feet at 500-800 meters, and that's with <=10 round burst, sustained cyclic would be worse .
-
Kind of talks for the damage model.. if vehicle damage bugs, how can we be sure the airplane damage works?
Aka über Hispano & M2 case, where those are even more powerful than historically were compared to MG151/20.
-
I saw a 75mm shell bounce off a M16 once.
Perfect aim, fire, * kaboom *..
the shell flies, impact, and then.. it goes * boing * and the shell bounces vertically... on a M16.
Determined to prove this absurd behavior, I recoreded almost all of my GV sorties after that incident, and experienced same things quite a few times... however, it was then I found out the shell bouncing isn't recorded in films.
...
Damn!

Why play for rank? All a good rank indicates is that you are a "gamer" with too much time on your hands. Play for fun.
-
I play for fun, rank comes as a consequence to enjoying yourself because you generally play better when you are enjoying it... However, I find gv's frustrating at the moment so I don't use them unless it is the only way to defend/attack something.
-
I just dusted off my copy of Panzer Elite. Its pretty outdated, but if you can live with that it's a lot of fun.
-
If I had a nickel for every time a P51 (dont know why P51 is only machine gun plane that seems to do this) flat out KILLED my panzer in 3-4 passes...well last night I came up behind a panzer in my M16 (4 .50's?) put ALL 4 THOUSAND rounds into him..point blank..started rear..moved over to broadside..raked him back and forth....up and down...seemed to bust everything on his tank...no kill. Came back in M8 (yup..he was still there..prolly takin a dump) ..ONE round kilt him. No fluff'n idea how this business works

Brady, if you'd carried some HE rounds and fired 2 (1 to clear the AP round in the chamber) you'd a killed him. An HE round near an M3,M16 or M8 will kill it.
Why play for rank? Play for fun.
If this was last night, no you didn't go to bed, you goofed around in a gv and almost made a goon run for me to a V base I was killing. You rtb'd because there was a dar bar in the sector and you didn't want to die in a bomber...?
-
I went to bed after that I think lizzaed or this was after that incedent, I have always plaed for rank, for me it keeps the game interesting, so in a twisted sort of way it is fun.
BTW it is a common misconception that u nead to play a lot to get a good rank, I only had 40 hours last month and flew in the CT the last two weaks of the tour and made 9 in the MA.
Yes Lizzard I did rtb I figured I was going to die if I went to that V bases, smart thing for me to do was rtb, since I play for rank.

In real life, if my memory serves me right. An AP will
generate splinters as it penetrate the hull, and that's what
kill the crew. Kind of a shotgun effect.

Funny, he spelled explicatives right:D

In world war two the sherman tank met with better success against the lighter japanese armor then they did the german stuff. One problem they had was the armor piercing passed right through a japanese tank and the tanks just rolled on as if nothing happened. High explosive with an instantaneous fuze did the trick and knocked them out with a single hit. Online I find that the same thing works against m3s m8s and m16s. Even ostwinds can be killed with he and you dont even have to hit them but just get close.

wow imagine that, I did , the law of averages at work I suspect:), bound to get one right once in a while.
I will try more he, GP.
