Title: Mariah Carey...
Post by: H. Godwineson on December 04, 2002, 10:34:41 AM
Ok...I know I'm beginning to get a little long in the tooth.  And I probably am out of touch with developments in modern music.  And I realize that Mariah Carey is one of the highest paid singers in history.

But I found here absolutely painful to listen to on Nighline last night.  She sang almost exclusively in the upper ranges, a sort of controlled, warbling scream that slid up and down the scale as if she couldn't decide what note she needed to hit.  I detected a lot of talent but just couldn't stand how she abused it.

That style of singing seems to be becoming increasingly popular.  Is it just me, or does it seem to anyone that these modern stars do not really know what they're doing.  Is musical taste dead?

Regards, Shuckins

With all due respect, my Great Grandfather said that about the Big Band era of music....my Grandfather said that about the 60's generation of music...etc. etc.

With all due respect Rip, I find a lot of modern "music" to be barely controlled noise.  Tastes may change with the coming of new generations, but not always for the better.

It's called vocal acrobatics.  Christina Aguilera does it through 90% of her songs too.  I find it highly annoying.  All of the "hip" kids are doing it.  I was forced to watch American Idol a couple of times and all of the contestants did it too.  It's like trying to listen to a 4 minute, unstructured, out of control guitar solo.  It gets old very quickly.

When singers do it while singing the National Anthem, I feel the need to punch them in the neck.

(Side note:  It's a shame that Christina dresses like a 3-dollar potato, because she has a tremendous voice.  Mariah used to showcase her voice too, now she just tries to jump through hoops.)

why do you think country has gained popularity - it's about the only modern music that doesn't make my ears bleed

beside the Faith Hills and Shania Twains :)

Personally, I don't care for the newest generation of music, hell, I just began enjoying some "Grunge" tunes from a decade ago!

My taste in music ranges from Opera to Acid rock and *almost* everything in between.  Currently listening to Louis Armstrong as we speak :)

cary is a very pretty girl who can't sing , but she did marry a record producer and then  became a "over night " star.

music of the 60's and 70's is still around and have sell out concerts - bad co, stones, rod stewart, moody blues, areosmith - to name a few

you think in 2030 ANY of today's "artists" will be able to claim the same?

I'm dissapointed to even see her name mentioned on this BBS... I was hoping most of you had at least a bit of taste left...

No, of course not.  None of todays anything is or will ever be as good or have the longevity of anything from when you were young.

I was being sarcastic right there...could ya tell?  :)

Maria is pretty and marketable. That's it... she's marketable.

I'd rather listen to Bic Runga and Beth Orton.

I used to think that Shania Twain was all looks an no voice. The other day I heard her singing and for a moment, I thought it was Karen Carpenter. Maybe she's changed her technique.

Oh... and if you like the older Maria Carey stuff, try the newer non-country Leann Rimes stuff... Added bonus is she's looking quite the skank. :)

I couldnt agree more on the ridiculous way Mariah Carey sings.  She seem determined to show off her vocal range with every note, not seeming to give a good whoopee that she ruins every song she does it on.

The tragedy is she does have a voice with a lot of potential if she would only learn to use it right and sing songs in a decent manner.  Can you imagine any fan trying to sing along with her music? Forgetaboutit.

As far as looks, she is okay but lately been getting kinda fat, maybe that happened when she was locked up in the looney bin babbling on about how her movie Glitter was the worst bomb in movie history?  :D

Her ego will preclude her from ever realizing her potential.

VH1 did a pop-up-video for one of their "Divas" concerts.  In it, the pop-ups that came up for Mariah Carey said "Mariah insisted on only being shot from this side angle to avoid looking plump on camera" (She has wide hips)  Then they showed the shot of her with a "her good side" and then "her not so good side" pop-ups.

Right after her, Sheniah Twain came on wearing a one piece leapard jump suit.  The camera came on from her side and said "Sheniah's good side", then moved behind her and the pop-up said "her other good side", then it moved in front of her and said "her other good side".

As for the singing, it seems to be something Witney Houston got going with that stupid song for "The Bodyguard".  Dammit that irritated the hell out of me.  2 years later and everyone is doing the warbling inflection crap in their songs.

As for the stones... the are just as bad today as they have always been.  I think the only reason they were ever popular is that virtually everyone can sing along to their music and sound better than Mic.

Easy to tell Mariah is built for packing on calories.  What a battle that must be, trying to remain sexy as she gets older and unvariably, fatter.

Still, her early stuff was real fine but then she went rap potato on us.  Too bad.

Anyone catch Shania on the CMA's? I personally don't listen to country, but I'll watch Shania or Faith ANYDAY!

I've discovered Blues in a big way last couple years. Love it. Whats funny is, you can listen to Robert Johnson and hear half of what came out in the next 50 years give or take a few changes. Muddy Waters Rules!  Johny Lee Hooker?

country?  You call that COUNTRY??? ROFL!!!!!  Man... the crap you hear on "country" radio (or TV, whatever), while it is often very enjoyable to look at (Shania etc), is nothing more than pop music with a fake southern accent and a steel guitar thrown in lol.  There is very little country left... and Shania aint part of it brother.
