Here is mine.
Bradley was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Can't believe its been almost 9 months.
-
What is it that makes dogs so faithful to humans? Mutual benefit? Seems like more.
-
Food.
-
I think a dog might starve to death defending it's human. Gotta be more than just food.
-
So, are you and the missus having boys or girls, or both? ;)

Momma's dog. Part coyote part pain in the ass.
But a great watch dog.

Fine looking dog Midnight, but you're risking his health by keeping him that heavy. Labs should weigh roughly 80-85 lbs. at an age of 6 yrs. or older.
Here's mine when he was younger, and a working dog (He LOVES to hunt, I just take him out for short walks in a field with lots of chucker so he can still do what he loves to do)
-
Actually, he isn't too overweight by normal standards. I'll try to get a shot of him standing. His ribs show a little and his belly is smaller than his rib cage by a good margin. He eats once a day and we have been on 2 a day walks since day one.
Hell, I lost 15 lbs. :D

I'm going by Vet standards, what standards do you use? Just saying, if you want him around longer, get his weight off. ;) Mine ballooned to 95 lbs. before I started having to cut his food back and excercise him more (I retired him from hunting at age 8 since I've seen too many good hunting dogs die a young age due to over-hunting them)
-
I have suffered more grief over the loss of some of my dogs than over some of the people I've known. That isn't right, I know, but I can't help it. I was particularly fond of two who were brother and sister from the same litter. Half Catahoula, one quarter beagle and one quarter blue-heeler. Aggressive when they needed to be, extremely protective of my two children. While they roamed outside quite a bit, we kept them cleaned up and allowed them to sleep in the house. Both would curl up around our feet or sleep pressed against our backs.
We lost the female to a hit-and-run driver. The male came down with cancer and had to be put to sleep. I cried for days.

I hear ya Rip, and agree that he still needs to drop few pounds. What I should have added is that he is a large Lab by breed standards (IIRC BS is 23-24" at the soulder). Bradley is 28" at the shoulder. So 80 lbs may be unrealistic for him.

Nice lab!
Dogs rock..
here is my baby...
She is a bit bigger now.. but I cant find my damn digital cam... lol lost it somewhere in the move to our new place.

Kinda veering off topic a little...
I just don't let myself get attached to pets. I did as a kid but not as an adult. I feed my dog and cat and take good care of them and all, but if they were killed tomorrow it wouldn't bother me. They're just animals to me. If something happened to a family member, that's a different story.
-
Geez! That is a broad shouldered lab, Midnight!
Mine has alittle Springer mixed in his blood, which is great for preventing some well-known pure bread diseases in the blood line, and he inherited the Springs good nose! He made an excellent Upland bird dog as well as his natural retrieving abilities while hunting ducks. The first thing he ever retrieved was a goose that outweighed him by 5 lbs. that was wounded, funniest thing I'd ever seen was this goose biting the back of a 10 month old dogs neck as he';s trying to swim with it to shore. He got a big drum stick for that (minus the bone)

I can understand your reasons, but any time I have had a dog it has become a part of my family.
-
Yeah I am with Curval.
I do not understand how it could be just an animal.
When I had to put my first lab down, I cried, the same or harder then when my dad died.. Maybe harder cause we had to put her down...
-
My brother brought home a tiny samoyed 5 years ago... and my mother, who was horribly afraid of dogs said she would not live under the same roof with a dog.
Now I dread the day that dog will die, it will rip her heart, as she has ended up treating him as her youngest son.

After my wife and I move back up to Oregon (end of January) we are hoping to get a lab. Preferably from a breeder, but we are going to keep our eyes open at local lab rescues. Time to start our family!

Takeda, reminds me of my wifes aunt and her husband. My wife's family gathered over at their house for thanksgiving dinner. They are finishing up their new home. It is a 7000+ sq. ft. home that has cost them 1.1 million dollars to build. They have money out the wazoo. He lost over a million dollars in Lucent technologies stock a few years ago but could still afford to have that house. And it's paid for. Anyway, they have no kids and are approaching their 60's. And they have this pekingese dog that's like 120 in human years stumbling around the house. The dog can barely see and walk. And they agonize over it's impending doom.
They have all this money and are obsessed with this freakin lil dingleberry doggie. If I were them, I'd blast the mutt and adopt some underprivileged children. Heck, they have 7 bedrooms. People are screwed up.
Getting lovey dovey with pets make you weak and skews your perception of reality.
(I don't mean that in a bad way!

FYI,
Bradley was in the pound, and 1 day away from the gas chamber when I got him. He was listed as 3 years old, but I think he might be a little older. He was also never trained, and I heard from the pound people that he had lived in an apartment.
The amazing thing is that he has become incredibly bonded to me. I was working in the yard, and my smart bellybutton kid saw Bradley just staring at me. He tried to stand between me and Bradley... Bradley would have none of that. He just kept moving to a new place where he could see me.
He likes water (streams and lakes), but refused to jump into our pool. His retrieving instincts are there, but he still seems unsure about running away from me, like I will not be there when he returns.
What he really enjoys is carrying around stuffed animals. Go figure?
(wish I'd read Hb's post 1st. Now I'm skewed and weak...)

Is this a cat-free zone?
I'm delighted to hear your dog is working out great. All of my animals were shelter resuces that were going to be put down if no one could foster them until more room was available.
I got "Mokey" when he was 3 weeks old...shelter called, they were packed full and he was on the short list to be put down unless someone could foster him until room freed up at the shelter. For some reason, they called and asked if I was interested in fostering or adopting him. They knew I had an older, sassy cat and really wasnt into kittens. But the girl said he was a very sweet cat with "personality" and I should at least see him. So, why not...went over, little black puff ball...wasnt impressed and thought it was just bad luck for him. Then he looked at me, purred, then CHOMPED on my finger. Yep, he has attitude. Box em up! Adopted him and brought him home...my one year old cattle dog treated him like it was her baby. Funny to watch a young female dog tend to a kitten.
Spin forward a year later...we got a call that someone dumped of a litter of kittens in the local Kmart parking lot. Some folks recovered them and some were adopted, but two were very very thin and didnt look like they'd make it. So, we brought them home and just hoped they'd live a few more days. Well, slowly, they gained weight and made a full recovery. My Ex GF kept Smudge (he isnt black, but he's not brown either...he's a lil of both) and Pudgey (he can eat!) looks identical to Mokey in his little tuxedo-like look.
Mokey is now 2, and Pudgey just turned 1. These guys play hard and sleep hard LOL...Mokey isn't too bright, but he's handsome...Pudge is the thinker, always into something and always exploring any shopping bags that come his way.
Here's how they are during their "busy days"

Damn I miss having a dog. :(
But, after my wife, step-daughter and I get back from vacation this year, we're gonna get a Sheltie. Not necesarily my first choice but they really want one and we need a small dog due to space problems. And right now I just want a dog dammit! :)
But, when we finally get into a house, I've already informed the family that the first thing we buy will be a chocolate Lab. And, fortunately for me, my wife is all for it :D

See? What other friend has ever helped you do that? ;)
I'll have Labs till the day I die. As many of them as my land will allow. Looking to move out to the country this summer after the last one gets out of high school.
Then...... arf! arf!

or you could leave your 2 dogs with your ex-wife for protection and for the kids enjoyment, then find out one day she got rid of um.
Seems she didn't feel like messing with them, even tho the kids loved um like crazy. I am trying to get one of back now, arggh, ex's

Dogs are held in a perpetual adolescent state. We are their pack leader. Young wild dogs behave the same way to the pack leader.
