"The Iraqi committee is the only Olympic committee in the world with its own prison and torture chamber,''
Dangit! Are we falling behind????

If you bribe the French judge you can get out.

The wilder your lies are - the more people will believe it. (c) P.J.G.
Horror tales for 5 years olds.

I agree with Boroda here. This is just untrue western propaganda like that of soviet gulags and death camps. I for one dont believe a word of it.
-
Yes I think Herr Goebbels must have written that article. Please post the completely correct Pravda version.
-
"GENEVA -- A human rights group formally demanded that the IOC expel Iraq's national Olympic committee because its chief -- Saddam Hussein's eldest son Uday -- tortured and jailed athletes who failed to please him."
Wasn't this the plot line in a Roger Corman film back in the '70s?
Or at least it was worthy of a Jesse Franco film. I'll bet if a cult video fan searched around the http://www.somethingweird.com library they'd find something close to it. I would, but I have better things to do with my time.

WE CAN NOT ALLOW A TORTURE CHAMBER GAP!

MT don't you have any faith in John Ashcroft? By the psychotic way you lefties scream about him one would have to think Auschwitz-USA is just around the corner...
-
Come on, guys - it's blown way out of proportion. Crawling over the hot asphalt while having your bellybutton kicked was considered a mild punishment in either soviet army or sports.
"Amature" athletes in totalitarian countries enjoy immense privileges compared to the mere mortals - no need to work, appartments, cars, jobs for family members, governmental awards - orders, medals, etc., ample material compensation, friendship and company of important officials, public adoration, access abroad, immunity from the prosecution in mild cases such as rape, maiming and mayhem, etc.
It is only natural there is a price attached to that. When you sup with a devil...
Not that I condone the treatment, but it's the whole totalitarian regime that is a problem.

Turn on your brains, gentlemen.
Sad to see so many intelligent people (I didn't mean you, GH, sorry!) believe in a crap like this.

Is Ashcroft in charge of the USOC now? If so I will breath a sigh of relief. There's no way Iraq will out-gulag our Olymic athletes with John "Torquemada" Ashcroft on the job.
(I hope that lived up to your expectations GH)

No evidence and no witnesses.
Let's bomb them unless they can prove that the athletes were not tortured.
-
Yes no atrocities have ever been committed by the Hussein family or by Russian or Soviet troops. Of course any reports of atrocities by Western forces are to be believed implicitly.

Miko, next step will be the sad fate of the artists - didn't they make you march singing songs in gas masks in the army?
What you said is only partially true. And you know it.

Horror tales must be a poular genre in your country :)
Eduard Streltsov. Ever heard about him?...
Miko, people you are talking about were professional sportsmen, being "amateur" only on paper.

No argument... Uday has tortured people and he's a bad man. This makes the athlete story believable even if it might not be true.

Funked, speaking about Soviet "atrocities" - I never said it didn't happen.
I studied in one class with a guy who's father was in Iraqi communist. So I know some things not only from books.
Hussein isn't an angel, his crimes have to be investigated. But such silly propaganda roadkill as the link you posted... You can't expect anything else from journalists, but believing it is a shame for any literate person.
-
You think I never known someone from Iraq or Afghanistan or the USSR or PRC?
I don't know if I believe the story or not, or even if I care. But there sure seems to be a pattern developing in regards to Uday.
-
Funked, I meant repressions against Iraqi communists in mid-70s.
Unfortunately there is a pattern developing in regards to whoever contradicts the US interests. And quite different pattern in regards any prettythanghole and terrorist who suppotrs them. KLA is a good example.
Just like USSR supported Arafat back in 70s.
Funked, do you really believe they will return that CV groups heading to Persian Gulf?... THEY need a propaganda impact to justify the bombings that will start in a few weeks :(
-
Boroda: Miko, next step will be the sad fate of the artists - didn't they make you march singing songs in gas masks in the army?
Gas masks, leisurely marching? How about gas masks plus rubber chemical warfare suits over the regular winter uniform with full kit and on the run? :D
What you said is only partially true. And you know it.
You mean I should have qualified my statement with "most" rather than to make an impression that I described every single soviet athlete? Probably. Remenber, it's not a book but a real-time discussion.
Eduard Streltsov. Ever heard about him?...
He allegedely refused to "play by the rules" and pissed off some big bosses by disobeying to join either army or KGB teams. I am not even sure he had to be framed - the common policy of soviet powers regarding the indistry managers, prominent pople, etc. was to close the eyes on their transgressions - untill they got out of line.
Miko, people you are talking about were professional sportsmen, being "amateur" only on paper.
That is exactly what the quote symbols (") around the word amateur were supposed to convey. Practically all athletes at republican level and higher - even regional depending on the local bosses' attitude - were professional. Americans are quite aware of that now.

I don't think there are a lot of people over here who will want to pay for a war unless Saddam provides a really good reason. If Bush does it without such a reason then he will pay at the polls and we will pay at tax time. :(
I think a lot of people underestimate Bush and Hussein as poker players though. A lot of bluffing going on.
If there is going to be warfare I'd rather see it directed at Al Qaeda and other Muslim terrorist groups.

recent events only indicate that we will pay@tax time

Naaa threatening war and the reality of war are different. People will think differently once they get the bill and once Saddam lobs a few chemical missiles at a cavalry regiment.
We are already back into deficit spending because of the recession and 9/11, and the war would just make it worse. No way will Bush get away with that in the long term. He's gotta know that.

Oh c'mon funked, turn your brain on. This is a lie too. Just ask Boroda.
-
Sure did MT.
The matter of fact way you placed attrocities with Ashcroft betrays your irrational fanatic hatered of the man. You want him to be that caricature you lefties drew up about Bush and his team and it just kills you they dont meet your unique expectations. Right? I mean to your kind Bush is a "moron" and Ashroft is a nazi, Colin Powell is a yes man race betraying "house slave", yet this gang of supposed incompetants just wiped the floor with your side and your non-issues. The only things you poeople contribute polically are Ashrcoft is a nazi scare tactics and Bush is stupid jokes- no wonder Americans voted against your party.
Boroda:
Hello Boroda! I hope the nurses are nice to you today. And If you are extra good I'm sure they will even let you outside the nice soft room, perhaps they will even take you outdoors to play in the snow. And dont forget to take all the colorful pills they give you.

wont happen.
saddam is in bush's pocket.
Bush will make all the isolationists, hippies, libertarians and real conservatives look like idiots for protesting potential war after he "stares down" saddam with his tough guy posturing and strengthens already suffocating political grip of the republicrats & M/I complex
