Title: Damage Modeling Wish List
Post by: Bad Omen on July 31, 1999, 03:43:00 PM
Well, we have threads with a/c, strat, engine controls, etc. I am starting one with damage modelling. PYRO and HT, you guys are probably already thinking about doing some of this stuff, but I hope I give you some new ideas.

1.) Pilots can be injured, not just alive or dead. You got only a few minutes to get back before you pass out or bleed to death.
2.) Those damn fuel tanks. Make it so when you hit the left tank, you only lose fuel from the left tank! And now, your plane is out of balance, so it flys like a P-38 with one engine(well almost). As I have mentioned in the engine control thread, if this was mated with the ability to select/switch which fuel tanks your getting fuel from, external drop tanks/fuselage/wing tanks would be too cool. yeah, probably be a lot of work. Well, even if switching was automatic, I still want to only lose fuel from the tank damaged!
3.) Oil line gets hit, oil builds up on the windshield. For a long time only SWOTL modelled this. Now WWII Fighters does too. The coup de grace would be if you got oil on your windshield from the guys engine in front of you that you just shot up!
4.) Take damage from hitting parts of the plane you just shot up.
5.) Controls that are shot up but are still there. Like Aerilons hanging by a thread. They will start flapping once in a while, making your whole plane vibrate. Maybe it gives out totally on the way back to the field.
6.) Guns that jam from overheating or firing at too high G's. Maybe even randomly too. Or more often like the 37mm on the P39 that often jammed after firing one round!
7.) Instrument panel takes damage too.(Let's see, how much fuel did I have???)

That's it for now. I'll (and others I'm sure) will think of more later.

Damage generates drag and loss of lift!

When you shoot up someone's wing, it might not just fall off, but it gets less effective. Same with control surfaces. An aileron full of holes generates much more drag adding adverse yaw.

More levels of damage between working or not where appropriate. That is the most important to me I think.

Canopy jams. Be it from gunfire or collisions with other aircraft. Try to bail and no go...ride your craft in.

Great Points guys!  I would love to see this implemented in this game.  I hate it in Warbirds that your life, most of the time, is on account of your aircraft being destroyed or not.  By this I mean, why can't you have "pilot shot" or something like that that will make you think about getting down real quick or even bailing out?

Just my 2cents worth.
