Airport Security.
Already drifting back to what it was before. Give the impression of security and that's all we need, right?
Like this terrorism thing is over already or something.
You just gotta laugh.
Security relaxed in time for holidays (http://www.cnn.com/2002/TRAVEL/12/08/airport.security/index.html)

At 17 airports, passengers at check-in counters in the main terminal may be chosen for more thorough screenings.
Combine that with the fact that it is forbidden in the US with ethnical profiling, and I think its clear we have a winner...

Airport security is a joke.
No matter what you do, it will be possible for someone to hijack a plane. There is no way to stop a truely determined terrorist from killing people. None.
We live in a free country, and the price of freedom is our security. Freedom is not cheap, and the cost is people dying. We can work to prevent it, increase security to a point. But when it comes down to it, there is little we can do to stop anyone truely determined to attack us, short of becoming a police state.
There is nothing more important than freedom.

but.... how can that be? creamo assures me that air travel is a pleasant experiance as it is. Those guys are as out of touch as I am.

Flown into and out of Reagan National 2x in the past year. I didn't notice anything approaching added security this last time.
The first time (June) we were isolated in the waiting area prior to the flight into Reagan. You couldn't stay in the area near the gate without a ticket for that flight. No such thing happened in November.
They still restrict movement in the plane for 1/2 hour prior to landing and after takeoff from Reagan.

With life so good for so many Americans, perhaps the terrorist threat has taken on an air of unreality. The economy is beginning to show signs of recovery; the stock market has been steadily improving for two months, the holiday shopping season appears to be more robust than last years', and Americans are more optimistic about the country's economic future.
But we are not secure. We have an implacable foe that is just biding it's time. We cannot and should not tolerate such shreckless attitudes by our security personnel. The Israelis don't.

Hortlund, it's been proven that random searches are better then profiled.

Uh...who proved that? And how?
Never mind that actually, please enlighten me as to why random searches are better when we know that 100% of all suicide bombers targeting the western world are moslem men and women. Or when we know that something like 99% of all hijackers are moslem men (there were a couple of hijackings with russian guys trying to defect to the west back in 90-something).
We know who the enemy is Thrawn, so why do random searches?

Americans are just too damned lazy.
Sadlyu it's convenience before safety in a lot of people's eyes.

Because (duh) your enemy knows you know this. So the next time it will be some blond, square jawed WASP with the suitcase nuke, and you will have missed him because you're having fun hassling the ragheads.
The whole point of Random Searches is that your enemy cannot reduce his chances of being searched by altering his appearance, demeanour behaviour etc.
I would have thought that was bleeding obvious:0)
Of course, if someone walks through airport security, looking like bin Laden and carrying a ticking parcel, you should probably stop him.

Yeah, because we all know how middle aged white males are lining up as voulonteers for the next Al Queida suicide attack...

Wasn't the bomb that blew up the PanAm flight over Scotland checked in by a white woman (unknowingly) that happened to be the girlfriend of a terrorist?

Hortlund, think for about 10 seconds (take a little longer if need be) and you will see that random searches will be much more effective in intercepting 'bad people' than simply only stopping and searching 'people who appear to be arabs or muslims'.
Underestimating the enemy is usually the last mistake one gets to make.
