Title: The Ultimate Sound Pack released
Post by: flakbait on March 20, 2001, 05:38:00 AM
<salesman mode>
"Greetings shoppers! Are you tired of engine sounds that resemble a diahrrea-stricken gorrila instead of a Pratt & Whitney radial? Are you sick of gun sounds that are actually recordings of Fatty's mom in a belching contest? Look no further! For The Ultimate Sound Pack has arrived!"
</salesman mode>

It never works, does it? Well you read right I'm FINALLY DONE!!! Thanks to many people I am finished and this beast is ready for download. A few nutcases helped me in de-bugging these sounds, although only two actually told me about anything. (gee thanks Rip!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) ) Lephturn and Fishu have had one version or another for at least the past 3 weeks. Leph hates Funked's P-47 engine run (drove him mad) so if you saw him running around firing at "Hippie Angels" you know who to blame. Using the little-known feature of "Paste-mix" I revised the tank gun with part of Mitsu's tank sound. Every gun sound has been reworked, tinkered with, or changed in some way. Fire off a 30mm cannon and it sounds like a 30 mil, same goes for any 20mm cannons.

I added a sharp whistle in place of the stock bomb drop click. If you like it enough, just copy it into every plane and have at it. I didn't place a copy in each plane's folder since you wouldn't hear it in every plane. You will notice that the Ar234 has almost no flap sound or gear sound. I lowered the volume on those since you wouldn't hear them over the scream of those Jumo engines. Since the engine sound is so loud you'll notice I borrowed AKWabbit's screaming stall horn. I couldn't hear the stock stall horn, and this thing lets you know when you're barely entering stall condition. Stress is also cranked up so you can hear it.

In all there's some 311 sounds in this sound pack. Your average sound pack uses a different sound set for each plane. Why do this? Last I checked both the F6F and F4U use practically the same engine! Since an engine sounds nearly the same regardless of what plane you stick it in, I just used sounds that work for each engine type. No, this is not an attempt to create a historical sound pack. I used sounds that I thought kicked ass! No more putting around in a 2,200 hp fighter using the engine sound recorded from a dang Cessna! Gun sounds are completely new; thanks to Whels1 letting me borrow his .50 cal sound.

I cleaned up each sound, or built new sounds when I couldn't find any that worked. The MG 151/20 gun sound I built by hand out of the stock 20mm gun sounds. Doesn't resemble them, does it? Hispano sounds are something I toiled over for nearly a week before coming to the way they are set now. Combine two of the 20mm gun sounds and you get a pretty killer impression of one. 30 caliber MG's don't sound like an automatic BB gun anymore, and 50 cals actually have a slight ring to them. Listen carefully and you'll pick it out.

I know there's going to be some sounds that aren't really hot. The link below is to the readme file. Make sure you read the ENTIRE THING before downloading this sound pack. There's a large catch in regards to bandwidth you have to know, which is explained in this file. When the next version of AH is released you can just copy the sounds from one aircraft to another. At least in the case of variants. This pack ran my sound resources dry so I don't plan on making an addition to this.

Very neat, Flakbait.  Thanks for taking the time to do this.  Im one of those guys who likes to fly with the engine noise level way up there.

I got to give credit to Fscott especially on his FW engine sound. It was a thing of beauty.

Im going to give yours a try.  Thanks again.

Not my fault if you break windows or cause a 3.6 earthquake by turning the volume up. I've had the gun sounds alone vibrate my floor! Only a 40 watt sub-woofer too  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Leph if you're ever in the states stop by and I'll buy you a beer. Granted you never really said which sounds stunk or ruled (except Funky's P-47 engine) but you still helped me out. All I got from Rip was a quickie note saying two squaddies loved them. I plan on swiping his wallet to buy those beers!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

And yes I'm stalking this post. This is my baby and I want to make sure she lives up to expectations. Even though I hate the Spit's engine run  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

wow!  This is a fantastic collection.

Thanks Flakbait. I'm downloading and wil try them later when I have time. But I do appreciate all your time and workyou put into this!!!

I think I'l have to burn all the sounds I've collected from here onto a seperate CDrom. With yours it's now a collection that amounts to almost 100mb. And that's all zipped too  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Thanks Westy, took me about 6 months to built my sounds folder up this large. Another month or two of editing here and there to weed out glitches. Nothing worse than an engine sound that pops when it loops. What got me was the roar of six 50s in the D-hog just making it over the engine. Thanks to working on this I now know what plane uses which sounds, and how to give them a little kick. If anyone wants this info just look in the sounds directory for a given plane. Once I figure out who did the stock RATO sound I can send them a dump-truck loaded with mud. Why? Rockets don't have a slight pitch up when they fire.

Naturally I've got a few gripes. The Spit's engine didn't come out the way I wanted it to. Sounds like a Cessna or Piper Cub to me, annoying to no end. Both P-51's could be higher in pitch, but the sound pops when you try upping it. One of those that works best when left at the default pitch level. The Dora and Ta-152 are the same way. But hey, it sounds great and there's just enough bass to vibrate the floor at high RPMs! But as I warned above, don't blast the volume if your windows are near new. Even though my sub is only a 40 watter the window not 6 feet away will rattle when I fire the guns in any Fw-190.

Ohh, and watch out for the P-38; she gets real LOUD at full power!

Voss my site is up and running. I just checked both it and my hit counters; everything works. The download counter alone is currently at 75 and climbing. The last hit from the download counter was about 5 minutes ago. Check the URL or enter it manually and it should come up. My friend's site that I'm borrowing space from is up and running too. Odds are it's a SNAFU on your end; maybe your browser doesn't like my page. It wouldn't be the first time that's happened since NS 6 cheez-balls have yelled at me for crashing their shiny new browser. Something to do with the counter code and the javascripts I use.

Both files are self-extracting exe's, meaning they will create any folders that aren't there and over-write the ones that already exist. This is why I posted the readme file and the warning in bright yellow at the top. Make a back-up of your sounds folder in another directory unless you don't care if you lose sounds. In which case simply tell the program where Aces High's sound folder is and that it can over-write at will. You'll see a button labeled "..." which you should click. Find where you installed Aces High in that window and highlight the sounds folder, then hit OK. At the bottom there's three radio buttons:

Confirm Overwrite: It will ask you if you want to over-write each file

Don't Overwrite: It won't overwrite anything, just install anything that doesn't have the same name as an existing folder/file.

Overwrite: wipes any file in the sounds directory with the same name and installs everything.

If Zip Central had the option of automatically backing up a directory before the exe runs I'd use it. But it doesn't, so you have to. You can simply drag and drop your sounds directory to another location and tell the program to create the sounds folder. It will do just that.

Rip, I know I was just pulling your chain!   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) As a movie producer once said "If you get perfect audio in a film the audience forgets it's even there. If you get really crappy sound you'll hear about it from everyone. So aim for the middle and pray you hit gold."

Well, it's very difficult for me to evaluate your sounds Flak because it's a very subjective thing, so I didn't get into detail about each one.  However, I did check almost all of the planes and vehicles and listened to the different sounds.  They all seemed interesting and a bit different, which is what I really like.  I didn't have a whole ton of time to do this, but I did make an effort.

I'll take the Beer though.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)  <S>

Actually I did that on purpose Pugg. I tried using the same .50 cal sound for both banks but it came out with the "Doppler shift" bug. Listen to the P-38 or Arado engines and you'll get the effect. The sound will attack and fade, and it sounds like crap with the guns. So instead I changed the M2 sound to something a bit different. I had the same trouble with the Hispano cannons but got it fixed using a different method. If there's any goofs I spot I'll fix them ASAP and post a quick patch.

Saw, thanks for telling me you were having problems with ultimate2.exe. I shot you an e-mail about 5 minutes ago about it. Everything is fine on my end.

Leph I don't know if I can make the Con as my budget is real tight. I'll know later this year whether or not I can make it; might be getting a better job or a pay raise!

Hard to believe I've had 220 downloads so far today!!!

One small anomoly I hadn't noticed with previous sounds I used.....run out of fuel and ditch....when plane slides across the ground I get the engine shutdown sound. Sounds kind of funny when gliding from a few thousand feet with no engine, then engine shutting down when plane touchs the ground. But other than that...love em !   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Actually Griz that's a bug with AH. I noticed the same thing when I was working on this pack. I also found out both Yak's can bang the prop on the ground and not kill the engine. It just causes an oil leak. Speaking of which, I'm gonna post that in the bug board. Hell of a way to remember a bug!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

And I didn't mean to scare you with the panzer shell reload. I just thought it sounded killer.

Great sounds! One thing to watch for is that the download tries to go to a D: drive so if your hard drive is C: be sure to make the switch and if you have the original Aces High folder it will download it there instead of the Htc sounds folder.

Problem: Has anyone figured out what happened to the 8" and 5 " firing sounds? I lost them in the transfer, can't find what they are in my old folder and the same with whats in the Program Files\Htc\AcesHigh\sounds folder nothing comes up for a firing sound, both big guns have the hit sounds where as the smaller cal guns have firing sounds but no hit sounds, has anyone else ran into this?

Thank you gentlemen. I know the 20mm guns sound a tad weak, but I couldn't think of a better way to do them. I just added a little more bass to give the impression of a vibrating floorboard inside a fighter.

The default extract location I set just as a placeholder. You can click the button next to it (labeled "...") and find the directory you want to install them to. This info is on the readme as of yesterday, just so you know.

My 5" and 8" gun sounds still come up fine. It could be a one-shot bug, or something that needs attention. If I find the cause I'll do some digging and post a fix here.

Glad you've been enjoying these guys. Here's the total list of contributors:

If you drop your tank you should get a bomb drop whistle. Apparently there's a problem with the installer and read only sounds. It won't over-write them (thanks for the note Saw). If you've got a different bomb drop sound (bomb.wav) assigned to this you'll hear strange things! Then again it could be AH having seizures due to the 311 sound files, but nothing weird has cropped up on my end. And I've got the slowest computer here!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

And great work getting the ROF to match. I heard exactly 32 rounds emptying the clip on a 9t.

There really should be a link to this on the HTC downloads page.

Believe it or not the Yak-9T uses the stock 37mm sound. I just ran it through a loudness filter to get a better effect. This does however create a small problem; the PT-Boat uses the same sound. No problem you say? What if I told you the PT-Boat's 37mm cannon fired at half the rate? Problem! I didn't fix this since I couldn't figure out a way of doing it. So as it stands there's only ONE bug in 311 sounds; and I can't fix it.

As for my sounds being on the HTC site; Ronni will have to answer that. I sent her an e-mail requesting the link be done a certain way and never heard back. Probably an error on both ends, but I'll give her a holler and find out.

Downloaded and love em.

Few that I think could use tweaking...because on my big speaker set, they just sound odd.  Not complaints, just suggestions.  The F4 engine sounds like the sound was sampled too loud (or something).  Also, whats with the gun sounds?  Can't hear them over the engine anymore.

However, you scared the begeezus out of me when I was in the F4 and dropped bombs on some tanks.  That whistle effect or whatever it is had me hunched over the keyboard, looking for where that sound came from.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

I fly the Arado a lot, those improvements sound really nice too.  Rockets are much better.

That's it...lotsa compliments on your hard work!

*note to self: put more info in readme file next time*

Check your AH volume mixer settings. Odds are that's the culprit since I can hear all the sounds over the engine. The 50 cals in any plane vibrate my floor; all I've got is a little 40 watt sub. Leave all the mixer sliders at 80% and you'll be much better off. I purposely did the F4U sounds that way; sounds great to me. I modified all the sounds there for personal preference. In short: they kick bellybutton on an old speaker system like mine.

I posted a patch that will fix a volume goof on the F4U-1C, Tempest and Typhoon. If you are talking about the C-hog's guns being quiet then you're right. They were, but the patch will fix it.

Flakbait, nice job putting the different sounds into a nice installer.

The only thing I was looking forward to, and somewhat dissapointed by is that you only have one representation for each type of engine.  I was under the impression, for example, that you would put say 3 or 4 different 190a5/a8 engine sounds under the 190 directory, and so forth for each plane type. Then the user could select which version of the engine he liked best.  I think there are many author's engines that aren't represented here, although it is still a good effort.

Perhaps since you have access to all the wavs from the many different authors, you could do as stated above? I was looking forward to hearing people's versions of the 190, P51,..etc..

I'm having a bit of a problem here Flakbait.. when I run the .exe the only planes that have directories created (and that are listed as being included in the .exe) are as follows:
all 109s
all 190s
A6M5b
Ar234
F4U-1C
La5
La7
Lanc
M16
M3
N1K2
ostwind
P38L
P47D-25
P47D-30
Temp
Typh

That's all that I get.
.30 caliber MG
.50 caliber MG
30mm cannon
37mm cannon
Explosion 1 through 5
Stress & Stall were given a volume boost
Are not included in either of the .exes I have. When I run ultimate1.exe and ultimate2.exe I get the following error message: Cannot create the selected items.

BUT, all of the planes I listed have sound files inside of their directories. When I run the patch, I don't get an error. The only thing I did was download in WinME at work (T1 line, can't beat that), put them on a 250zip drive(using a 100MB Zip disk) and pulled them onto my system using a USB 100MB Zip Drive. I noticed that when I try to transfer the file by copying/moving it, my system will lock up. If I unpackage it, it works fine. The ultimate1.exe I could not transfer without system locking up. ultimate2.exe transfered fine. The patch came over fine.

Any ideas?

Not really SW. It could be that these exe's don't like WinME, or that there was an error in the download. Not liking WinME seems a bit far fetched since two of them worked fine. Try downloading them on the computer AH is installed on to see if it was maybe a download error. If that's not it, then something got corrupted somewhere. You've got me curious, so here's a short list of what I can think of:

1) Something went goofy with the Zip drive
2) Download error (use a download manager and not a browser)

Did you mess with the file list window? It's in the middle of the installer and shows a full list of everything in the exe. If you accidently clicked on something it would only install the files you highlighted. I'm going to grab the latest version of Zip Central and re-create these files. Once I do that I'll check them on my end to see if there was a problem. In the mean time try what I suggested above and see if it works.

Fscott, as I said above this pack alone drained most of my sound resources. This isn't a sound pack by everyone that includes four of everything. It's a collection of soundst I thought sounded the best overall. I don't have a T1 line, just a little 56k modem. I don't have 5 hours to upload 40 megs worth of files, nor do I have the space or bandwidth.

The Ultimate Sound Pack is now being hosted by HTC. You can find the readme and all files on the download page. Updated copies using the latest version of ZipCentral will be on my site around 9am (PST) today.

Flak, is it possible you could release just an engine soundpack?  So you would have like 3 to 5 engine sounds from different author's for each plane type, if applicable.  You have 7 to 8 wavs installed for each plane type in your current sound pack, so the engine pack would be smaller.

If not, that's ok.  Just thought it would be kinda cool for the user to pick which engine he liked best. You could set it up like: Fw190a8/a5: eng, eng1, eng2, eng3 files in that directory and so forth.

Fscott I actually thought about that. I considered making a sound pack of engines, guns, bomb drops, touchdowns, etc... Once I figured out just how intensive this project was I dropped that idea. This beast took all of the best sounds I've got. If you want to you can use the Spitfire 9's engine for the P-51 series, but to me it sounds too much like a Cessna. Only my opinion though. I updated the installer for those having trouble with the old one but didn't update any of the sounds.

Again as a note, download primarily from the HTC server.
