do you think there'd ever be a USS Slick Willie? I don't ... not even a tugboat
==============================================
Next Aircraft Carrier: USS George H.W. Bush
The Navy's next Nimitz-class aircraft carrier will be named for the only U.S. president ever to have been a naval aviator: George H.W. Bush.
The former president told a Pentagon audience today that he was not a hero, despite flying off a carrier and having his plane shot down in the Pacific during World War II.
He took the focus off himself by lauding today's service members. "I don't think of my generation as the greatest generation … because I've been around some of the kids that are serving now," he said. "There isn't a 'greatest' generation."
"The USS George H.W. Bush will serve as a worldwide deployable symbol of our nation's resolve," Navy Secretary Gordon England said during the ship-naming ceremony. He called Bush "a great, great American, a great patriot."
Bush enlisted at age 18 in 1942 and became the youngest pilot in the Navy. He flew a bomber off the carrier USS San Jacinto and was shot down in the Pacific in 1944. The future president went on to earn the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals for his service.
Later, as president, with "the modesty and grace that are his hallmarks, he presided over the end of the Cold War," England said.
Bush said he was "deeply honored" by the ship's designation. "I'm overwhelmed by this, and very, very grateful," he said.
At 1,092 feet in length and 97,000 tons, Nimitz-class aircraft carriers are the largest warships in the world. They have a flight deck of 4.5 acres and carry an air wing of approximately 75 aircraft and can travel at speeds in excess of 30 knots.
The USS George H.W. Bush, under construction in Newport News, Va., is expected to join the fleet in 2009.

I've never much liked this (relatively) new habit of naming ships after people that aren't dead yet.
-
I wonder if brits get a H.M.S Thatcher...
btw is there any-boat named after R.Nixon ?
Maybe a spy-boat, that would be propriety vessel for that name :)
-
We need a USS Bubba and a USS Jimmy Carter as well.
Maybe they could be defenseless carriers that sail to China and N. Korea giving away military secrets. :)
-
SSN Jimmy Carter is a nuclear submarine. I think its the latest Seawolf class.
-
SSN Carter wins Nobel Peace Prize...
...no wait, that's not right.
-
we could maybe see a USS lewinski. It'd have to be a sub though...'cause, they go down.
-
No offense to GHW Bush, but I can think of a lot of Americans that deserve this honor more than a 1 term President.

Yeah, TahGut has a point! There's a long list of Naval Aviator Presidents to choose from!

Depends...will his daughter be president?

Smack! "Man don't live long gut shot in this country"
Lots of anal Aviators to choose from. Oops.. typo :) I meant Naval Aviators.
Who says it has to be a President? (Stennis, Forrestal....)
-
heheh thats just as bad the the USS Ronald Regan CVN-76 .. I hope they don't lose it hehehe...
-
I hope we are progressive enough to someday name a naval ship after a courageously gay politician like Barney Frank. I would prefer serving on the USS Frank than the USS Bush.
-
"interior decorator"... well better than hair stylist :D
how about USS Monroe as a supply vessel so USS Kennedy could dock in it :)
-
< heard on the flight deck of the USS G.H. Bush >
So like, we can just not show up for a year and nobody will care?"
-
if daddys a corrupt texas oil man high up in the "party" with enough ole military buddies.

I figured a Gaylord would like Franks more than Bush.
-
That's awesome news! I've served under both Father and now Son (Bush's) and have loved every minute of it. Morale was and is always high under both of these great presidents. If I were in the navy (thank God I'm not:) I'd be proud to serve on that vessel.
Can't stand Carter though, when I was in the 82nd, we were going to invade Haiti when that @@$@## talked 'em into peace:( We had already recieved the operations order and had aircraft in flight for an airborne invasion when they turned us back. Talk about blue balls.

Yeah, peace and not being able to kill people and blow up stuff must have sucked.
Let's hope Bush doesn't make that same mistake!

Username,
I'm guessing you're either a male hair dresser, steward or actor. What the hell do you care anyway, you won't be doing any of the fighting.
When you do your part and serve and fight for your country then you can open your mouth, until then shut the hell up!

You'd make a fine Roman.

lol You are kidding, right?
I wouldn't name a sh*t-tip after her.
The funniest thing to happen in recent years was the be-heading of her statue in London. A teacher walked into a gallery with a cricket bat and metal pole and hacked her marble head off.
There was much rejoicing.

Ahh the Roman Empire! I have always loved their mix of utter brutality towards enemies, militarism, technology, their liberal views on religious freedom, their social policy and overall sophistication. They achieved an ideal balance of those factors for a very long time untill they enacted extreme socialism/communism that killed their economy and their army all went to toejam because they were no longer roman.
-
Lets not forget that the roman economy ran on slavery as well.
It's not surprising that soldiers want to fight; that, after all, is what they are trained for.
Generally speaking politicians decide who to invade and the soldiers do the invading, and then we the people get to watch people die on prime time TV, and we're told how necessary it is.
But WpNX, when were you going to invade haiti? (which year)?

do you love gladiator films too ?
hehe :D

Uh...so what kind of history books do you read anyway?
-
Roman movies are fun Ben Hur, Spartacus, and Gladiator are some of my favorites. I really liked the big Rome entry scene in "Gladiator". ;)
-
They really did not care too much what religion you practiced as long as you did not get too much in the way of things. Plus IIRC many of the christian persecutions are myths and those that did occur were often on the whim of mad emperors looking for a scapegoat.

Wow...that logic sounds a bit similar to the Moslem version of 9-11. "The jews did it, but the americans should blame themselves"
"There were no persecutions of Christians, but they happened because the emperor was mad."
-
I donno Hortlund make whatever point you wish to make anyway but my point is that religious persecution was the exception and not the rule in Rome. I mean really how bad was it when nearly all of of Rome accepted christianity within a historically short period of a few centuries. Contrast that to how long it has taken the west to let women fully participate in society or to accept non-whites as equals in our communities...

Get back and polish your boots soldier! It may well be that Username pays your salary. Without those tax dollars for the defence budget, there would be no 82nd.
And since when was having an opinion a right reserved for only soldiers?
It's your job to go out there, slaughter and be slaughtered. It's our job to cheer, moan, support and squeak about it.

Don't get me wrong bud, I am glad we have things like freedom of speech. Believe it or not when I see someone burning the U.S. flag (after I get over wanting to kick the livin crap out of 'em), it actually makes me feel good that we live in a society where this is allowed. I just get tired of hearing people pretend they care about their country but don't even care enough to serve the same country - and it doesn't even have to be military service. If you can't serve in the military at least show some support.
I just got back from six months in a combat zone, got shot at, shot back and I don't want to come back to a hear critisism about the war from people that have no clue what is happening in some of the countries we have on our "watch/hit list"
Karnak, thank you for the Roman comment:)

But so does ours.
Just a different kind of slavery. We have machines to do work that once would have had to have been done by slaves.

Since username claims to be in North Korea it seems doubtful he/she pays taxes in the US. Probably too dumb to hold enough of a job to even pay taxes anyhow. I will agree that only US tax payers have the right to an opinion in the US regarding government.

AKIron here's some Korean for him - see if he gets this:
Username - hangukmal halsu isso? Shipsekiga, Jea coondingilul bopo chuseyo. Myul gong bukhan saramdul!
Can't repeat most of that in English or I might get banned:)

I don't speak specifically and in depth to those who post in the O' Club and for good reason.
It has been my experience in life, that very few poccess anything more than an opinion rather than speak to issues from a practical place.
The O'Club is rampant with ignorance(applying the true definition of the word and not intended to be cast as an insult).
I am proud and thankful for the sacrifice Wpnx and others make each day so that I might be free and that my children might have a future blessed with peace.
Thanks Wpnx and any others who give their service to our country.
And to the rest of you who take issue with those who give in this way to our country, consider yourselves void of substance and character, not to mention any common sense.
There is a difference between the politics of this world and those who serve under the light of the same....don't forget that.

Now Rude, be very careful climbing down from that horse. It looks really high!

It's not a horse silly...it's a pillar of truth.

And they do, they're the only ones that can vote.
My opinion was not about US policy. It was about how people here seem to prefer the "glory of battle" over peace. Perhaps this view is the product of playing computer games in your safe comfortable homes, never experiencing the threat and sacrifices of war.
Yes, I'm sure most of you served your country proudly. But the job of a soldier is not to actively seek out war, and not to regret if war doesn't occur. But to view war as a last resort. And I'm sure you all know that NK has mandatory military service.
When I see the posts on this forum concerning war, I'm reminded of the WWI reaction to the outbreak of war. Ignorantly and blissfully rejoicing it as they marched off to the battlefield.
Or maybe I'm just...

Don't hold your breath waiting for them to come around, it took my generation some 25 years to recognise and appreciate the fact that us soldiers in Nam were just doing our duty.

No sane responsible person wants war, however, it's not always to be avoided at any cost.
