It's a non-issue anyway.

I did a complete series of flight tests to see if there were any advantages to starting and stopping your engine in combat.

In all tests, I found 0 performance advantage with the engine running at idle versus engine off.

Turn rate does NOT improve with engine cut or engine at idle.

Glide rate does NOT change with engine cut or engine at idle.

The only way to improve glide rate is to set RPM to the lowest possible setting for the aircraft you are in.

And just for the record, I did some research OUTSIDE of Aces High... from http://www.cebudanderson.com

Inquiry by ME :)

WTG HT. I had no idea you would go that far to test damage modeling.

Sounds like a humbling experience in real life!!!
during those moments many scenarios can play out in the mind that only a couple shots of scotch can erase!!

In the many years that I played AW, I do not recall one single incident where a player intentionally shut off his engine in mid-flight during a fight in order to gain some type of advantage over the other guy.  Not even the time I played WB did I ever see this.  It was only when I came to AH that I saw this 'dweebish' gaming tactic.

I think the point Ratboy was trying to make was more about you following someone around on the net, picking up posts they made in one forum and bringing them to another forum, as if they didn't know how to post that info here if they wanted to, rather than what if any use you intended to make with the info.

Its a valid point, at least worth considering. Think about it.

I suppose now HiTech won't frequent BigWeek because of the reaction of some dingbats here. And HBlair, if you're going to visit us, please keep it to yourself.

oedy, what would be the big difference? a '43 engine would be hot too, the air-fuel is being exhausted, just add some ignition and the engine oughta fire back up. Why wouldn't it?

Yea but was he pulling extrem ACM and attempting to gain an advantage over an adversary? Or was he just trying to save his AC and his life?

Why would anyone edit out every single post he made? Was the statement so weak that he wants to get rid of all record of what he said?

BTW, I have no idea what this thread is about, but I would have liked to know.

I think I'm coming into this thread late but suspect it has something to do with turning off the engine in flight and if it's something possible to restart easily (hard to tell though, a bunch of posts now just read "oops" and stuff.)  Just five minutes ago I put down a book and recall reading this:

"As his first target grew larger and larger in his sights, Olds placed his finger on the trigger of his four .50-caliber machine guns, ready to squirt a stream of lead into the cockpit of the 109.  Suddenly, his engines (P-38) sputtered and quit.  In all the excitement, he had forgotten to switch fuel tanks and his engines had run dry.  Without taking his eyes off the target, he switched tanks.  The engines erupted and came back to life and Olds took his shot.  'I don't know if anyon ever shot down an enemy aircraft while on a glide slope, but I did.  I fired and he sparkled with hits, smoked, dove off on his right wing and promptly bailed out.' "

pg 9, "Fast Movers."

Hold on Ack... back up a second there bud.  I had a formerly well known AW vet "RECOMMEND" shutting down Spit engine for a short time to increase Spit turn radius.... and that was when I was on my GEnie account.

Agreed Tumor....

Back in AWDOS, I was aware of this tactic and used it myself. It was common among the better pilots.
