I have been playing AH for the past 3 weeks without a problem. I was getting anyhere from 50 - 90 fps. at 1024 x768 with no restrictions selcted in the video options.
However, last week on Thus. night in the CT, I noticed that the mouse was scrolling VERY slowly across the screen. As this was Squad night and we were about to roll, I jumped in my AC and began the take off. The fps got so low that I couldn't get the AC off of the ground and crashed. I jumped back into another AC and managed to get it airborn. The rest of the night I struggled with a slower frame rate, but it had improved from that first take off attempt. When I went to review my film later, the frame rate was in the tank. It was very chopppy, down to <5 fps.
The problem is I can fly AH at anytime and get up to 96 fps and everything is smooth. Then it will decay to the point of 5 fps and down to 1 fps if I fire any guns. This is what I don't understand, one minute its ok and the next its horrible. I don't feel this is a software prob with AH, just a problem with hardware compatibility on my end.
At this point I did the following:
Upgraded the video drivers, no change. Rolled the video drivers back to an earlier version, no change. Went back to the current drivers, no change. I down loaded a freeware app that was supposed to let me adj. refresh rates on my machine according to resolution and refresh rates chosen for a certain game. No change. I have checked virtual memory, and disabled allowable processes to free up resources and still nothing changed. Checking IRQ's I found that Win2K put the sound and video with IRQ11, which is typical with this OS. I have even played other games to see if it effected them as well and they were greatly reduced in performance. I am at my wits end but I feel like I am missing something soooo obvious as to make me look stupid.
Vital stats:
PIII 667
Windows 2000 SP2
256mb RAM
Tyan Trinity 371 S1857 VIA (with 4in1 drivers installed)
Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro JS
AH 1.10 patch 7
Other things I have done:
-Reinstalled DirectX8.1.
-Adjusted resolution settings in game to match desktop resolution settings.

you have norton antivus? they update there virus files every thursday night and if you have your configured to download automatically then that might be a cause. Also try SP3

Thanks for the help. Did both suggestions with no change in frame rates. Any other ideas?

What I thought was wrong was wrong. A hidden process was killing my CPU to the tune of 48% to 95%, going back and forth. So I killed it instead.
