I still havent forgiven them for not including Tom Bombadil in the first one. The way it is now it sucks I mean, the swords...the swords...where did they get them? How would a normal sword be able to penetrate that spider...or that nazgul?

what about the pc police and the original title? What did I miss? Is there something un-PC about the 2 towers?

Bombadil was kind of an odd addition to the books anyway IMHO. They shouldn't have left out the Barrow Wights and the story of Frodos knife, and the gifts of Galadriel. Although the extended version adds the gifts of Galadriel.

Someone somewhere thought it was too reminiscent of the WTC. I don't think it was ever an issue except with some fringe crackpots.

I can't stand the wait!!!!!!

MT,
The Ents are IN! So you can stop worrying. Caught a glimpse of one in one of the commercials.

Yes to do and yes they did. If you watch the trailer carefully you can see a hobit getting picked up by an ent for a spilt second, you can only see up to it's knees. Verrrrry big.
-
Yep, I cant wait to see it, and it comes out 1 day before my birthday (19th!) :)
-
only a week now!
-
hehe, cajun, I share that birthday! ;)
umm, I think in the movie version of Fellowship, Aragon gives them the swords right before the nazgul on the watchtower scene.
If you wanna get on Jackson's case, how about Arwen even being in Two Towers. I don't recall her mentioned at all in that book.
-
2 towers is gonna be the 1 with the most stuff missing from the book...thats what I've been reading....they wanted more hmm hmm violence and all dat stuff
but they did leave the ENTS in....pheeewww
the 3rd movie is gonna be the closest to the book as possible.
as for Tom Bombadil...Jrr tolkien said Tom is a mysterious character....his origin is never known....and I wish they did have em him in though....so since Tom is NOT important to the fellowship....they decided to leave em out.

Some cuts had to be made, otherwise each part of the trilogy would have translated into 5 hours of film. I love Tolkien's work but only a true, slobbering, raving fanatic could sit through that.

I could easily sit through 3 x 24 hour movies about the trilogy. I mean...come on.
I've read every book Tolkien wrote more than once, and I think Ive read the lord of the rings triology 10 times or something like that. But I still havent figured out Tom Bombadil. Ive read Silmarillon maybe 10 times too, but I have yet to find a clue as to who/what Tom really is.
Btw, Silmarillon would make a great move. Or 3 great movies, or one 24 hour movie *drool*

Picture me slobbering and raving.
I 1st read the trilogy as a freshman in college. I remember skipping a few classes as I hated to put the damn thing down. I'm with Hortlund, I pick up the books about every 5 years now and reread them. (That makes quite a few readings for this old slobbering fanatic).

I've researched that exact question(I know I know i'm a geek)......and there is NOTHING
his origins are not known...his life is not known....JRR Tolkien was asked that question...He said "Tom is a mystery" and left it at that....the only thing we know is that Sauron couldn't do anything to em...so Tom had no worries.
-
Tom is the first man.
Friend of mine with an English degree told me this. He studied the Tolkien in university.
-
That doesnt make sense at all. If Tom was the first man he should have died ages ago. Who is he married to btw? Is she an elf? (elven?) Or is she a maia?
(Personally I think Tom is a maia.)
Anyway, SLO I think you are wrong. If I remember correctly I think its Gandalf that says something like, if the ring is returned everyone will be enslaved blah blah ...Toms kingdom (or whatever) would last a while like an island, then it too would fall to Sauron.
I cant remember exactly where I read that though.

It's Galadriel who gives them the elvish swords, it's all in the extended version, which I bought even though I already had the original DVD... nevertheless, a very good purchase, since the extended version adds some things that should have NEVER been left out (the presents from Galadriel are one of those things).
As for Arwen, heck, I know it's not in the books, but I do not mind the "artistic license" one bit. :)

I dont know what you guys think, but IMHO Lothlorien SUCKS. I mean whats with the colouring of those scenes? From the book I had pictured the light green grass, bright colours with birch and grass and flowers and ...well you know...elven stuff. Then the clear river and the white boats...Lots of pleasant colours, lots of green, blue and white...but nooo
Instead we get this crappy Germanlike Schwarzwald-forrest with huge depressing pines and dark dark colours. And Galadriel...I mean COME ON, that girl looks like a Horse in the face.
No, Lothlorien was awful in the movie version.

Remeber with every generation of men and elf, the blood grows weaker.
A human kill the first dragon, (forget his name). An elf wounded Morgoth, (evil god, was Sauron was his squeak)
Hence, "The blood of man failed."
Humans breed and die faster then elves so they became weaker faster.
Part of the reason Galadriel is damn powerful, she goes back to a much earlier generation.
So if you have the FIRST man, we are talking about an insanely powerful individual.
Edit: Wow! I'm REALLY geeking out! :D

Yes, but still a mortal.
-
Tom is nature itself.
If Sauron was to destroy all of middle earth, Tom would have been the last thing to go before there was nothing (according to Tolkien)
So Tom was sort of middle earth personified.

Sure, in theory, but if you die of old age at a million years old, who cares.
Beside he would probably diddly off to the "West" (heaven) anyways.

No, that doesnt make sense either. What is "nature itself" or "middle earth personified"? It might work as a figure of speech, but not as a character. If Tom would be something metaphysical like that, it would go against all the other characters made by Tolkien. Tom could be a maia or vala dedicated to protecting the nature, but that is a completely different thing.
Sauron is a maia, so if Tom was a vala it would be true that he would have nothing to fear from Sauron. But after the great war against Morgoth, all of the valar went to the west, so he cant be one of them. That leaves maia, elf or something else. He seems more powerful than an elf though (the part with the wright).
Thrawn, no man is allowed in the west. The only man to ever set foot on the western shores was Gil-Galad, but after that he became immortal, and never rejoined the ranks of men.

LOL So true. I think the Lord of the Rings nerds are actually below the Star Wars nerds in the nerd pecking order. Even the Star Trek New Generation nerds could kick their ass.

Fine, so he doesn't go into the west, but dies when he he is killed or middle eath explodes or whatever.

Bought the DVD Special Edition of Followship of the Ring and Felicia and I are going on the 18th.
BTW..I have Legolas as a vanity plate. Had it for years. PPl want to pay me to give it up. LOL:D

The Riddle of Tom Bombadil (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/t/tombombadil.html)
-
I agree with Hortlund. Lothlorien and Galadriel were the biggest dissapointments in the movie. I loved the movie, don't get me wrong, but Galariel is supposed to be a hauntingly beautiful woman, and Lothlorien had the golden trees.
Wasn't this also where Gimli and Legolas sealed their friendship, and where Gimli falls in love with the Galadriel. And the gifts!! How the heck are they gonna explain the special rope and the light of Elendil and.... oh my god... I am geeking.... stop meeeee!!!!!!
-
MT its on the Extended Version.
They figured that if you are geek enough to care about that, you will get it.
And about Galadriel, I thought it was great, but no woman will be 'hauntingly beautiful' to every man.
-
screw that.. my new machine arrives in 8 days !

About that light Frodo gets..I have been thinking about that one. Is that part of a silmaril? I cant remember exactly what the book says about that right now.

According to Tolkien we are living in middle earth right now, so I guess he's still around then.
