Hey guys!
As some of you may know, I work for TechTV and I am the Technical Director for a show called "The Screen Savers." It's a hour and a half live international television show all about computers and technology and a variety of other things thrown in.
For the past couple of months we have been hosting a LAN Party on Thursdays featuring such games as Q3, UT2003, Battlefield 1942, and now Counter-Strike. I have been asked many times why we never get to see such higher-end and more complex games like WB3, AH, and WW2OL. I don't really have an answer other than unless you are involved with such games, they are easily overlooked. TV is a lot about appealing to the mass audience and when it comes to gaming most people tend to think about X-Box and maybe Quake on PC.
Well, I've just had a nice little chat with one of our segment producers on exposing this world of MMOLG, specifically regarding flight-sims and the high-end HOTAS controllers that many of us shell out big bucks for. He's all for it and hopefully we can work together to at least attempt to shed a little light on what we all do. It probably won't be for another couple of months yet, as the show is heavily booked. But this could be a HUGE opportunity to get some bigtime exposure and some free press.
I'm willing to work with anybody who is willing to assist in this endeavor.
Thanks!
Keith

I would love to help however I can.
What kind of help do you need? Where is the show filmed?
-
wow ... that'd be great to see a story about AH
I watch TechTV all the time, yall have some good shows
Would this be about AH specifically or the online flight sim community in general?
-
Let's send Shane as a Goodwill Ambassador
-
Tech TV goes international BIG TIME !
We get it here in Israel as well :)
Would love to help in any way possible !
-
I'll help..
Do you film in LA?
-
Any way I can help in Texas let me know, I will even load up my setup and take it somewhere if needed.
-
If you need a supply of paperbags with eye holes cut in them I maybe able to help if someone can just supply the bags and the scissors.
-
I have little doubt the 332nd Flying Mongrels will be willing to help anyway we can. Might be fun having a squad flying during the production time.
BTW: I for one, get a kick watching the "The Screen Savers"!

TV is all about appeal, and all these old faces wont give much entertainment. Most of my gamer friends overlook simming as something that only old people do. This is mostly because the older crowd usually alienates the younger guys trying to get into the hobby. And then they ask themselves why the sim industry is failing, lol.
You'll have to put many young faces to represent the hobby. So let me know if you need help with the show :)

Anything you need help with I can help out also. If you are looking for people with "high-end HOTAS controllers" you have come to the right group. There are several of us (myself included) who have Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS setups and there are some here that have had various "mods" done to eliminate little problems.
BTW I love TechTV and hope that my new house up the road has TechTV available as a cable channel. If not I guess it will be satelite tv time.

I'd be more then willing to help out in anyway I can. :D
Drop me a line if you want at mdirecto@sympatico.ca.

Thanks for the response guys!
First off, TechTV studios are here in San Francisco.
Secondly, what I'm hoping this will be is a look at high-end online sims in general. Part of that is because I feel very much a part of all of them. I know that I haven't had much of a presence here at all but I've been playing AH on and off since the very first open beta verison. I've been a long time Warbirds player, starting back around 1995 and AW before that. I also play WW2OL as well as just about every other flightsim off the shelf. So I'm a flightsim nut just like you guys and also a WW2 history enthusiast. A chance to feature what we do on a international TV show has been a big goal of mine since I started working here at TechTV.
What I've done so far is to sell the idea to one of our producers who enjoys online gaming but hasn't himself ventured into the world of online flightsims. In my heart-of-hearts, I would really like to do multiple segments spotlighting each game (AH, Warbirdsiii, WW2OL). That's a lot of airtime, but I can hope. My intent would be to focus on the positive aspects of each game rather than a compare and contrast. I believe that they each have something to offer in their own way, and still there are many like myself who enjoy all three. I also want to get into the HOTAS controllers and other gear that people use. That could easily be a segment of its own.
So for now, just sit tight as this is going to take a lot of time and planning just to figure out what we want to do. I know you are all standing by to help anyway you can and when the time comes I'll take you up on it if at all possible.
Thanks again!

yes, you need pretty people that don't have a slow southern accent.
or FDB's.
one of the highlights could be that HiTech actually comes in and talks with the people on a regular basis?
-
If you decide to show any live game footage on TV you may want to squelch channel 1..and probably don't include range sound (because of the turrets syndrome-like outbursts)
You may have to actually film for a few days to get some that is fit for anything better than 11pm or Cinemax.
-
Don't forget the Sim Pits some guys have built or the commercially offered ones.
That has got to go with the "high end" HOTAS stuff.

Ozark when did they get real tell-e-vison in MO, last time I went and visited they only had a card board box with calenders on it and a radio sitting behind it. (S) ya dog ya LOL
-
I live in the LA area and have watched the show. Anything I could do I would be willing to help. Interviews with people crazy enough about the game to build something like this might be interesting.
-
LOL was watching tech tv a couple days ago (the one about overclocking...tried it and it didnt work of course) and was thinking about why they wouldent do a lan party with ah or something lol... of course i dont watch much as i dont have cable or sattelite...
icemaw nice simulator of course i am in the prossess of building one wich should put yours to shame (a bit later right now its just going to be a VERY basic simulator)

Come on, guys!!! This is obviously a "when" troll!!!!
Very soon, Wicked is going to respond and say, "On the show, we would like to feature some of the new stuff in 1.11. When can we expect it to be released so that I can book the show with the producer?". :D
-
DOH!

Mickey, ROFLOL!
yeah..so uh 1.11 when? :D
-
Cool Wicked! That's a great show, I watch it all the time.
Been watching some of the LAN parties and wondering how AH would go over.
I hope it works out. If it does can I be the first to shoot Leo down? :D
Keep up the good work there Wicked.

LOL! But they're new calenders with Erica Hill on them.

I think some exposure on a techie TV show would be great, especially if done correctly. I would really love to see Leo try and survive in the MA BWAHAHAHA!
I think one of the big things that needs to be more exposed on national tv is the relationship between MMOG and the communities they foster. How the players take a good game and make it great. Its people like Mitsu and his sound pack, the many field map sights, plane info pages and game strategies.
Sure we have a few bozos....but I can say that Aces High would get boring as hell on its own, but the community makes it stay fresh and fun.

Fire me an e-mail at cofster1@simhq.com .
We have several folks involved in several of the online games you are talking about. You may want to include games like IL2 in Hyperlobby, CFS3, Battlefield 1942 and Operation Flashpoint in your discussion. Even games like Flanker and Falcon 4 have some pretty big fan bases. I am sure that a lot of our writers would be happy to help, maybe even some folks over at Ubisoft might want to help out as well.
Let me know what you think. Of course I will help out from the Aces High standpoint-will even make sure that your story gets posted on our boards so people can tune in.

Ozark, the Mongrels on t.v.? You think they'd really let a guy named "Puke" or "banana" on? lol
-
guess u would want some perspective from an international point of view then? ;)
I`m sure 249 Raf Gold Coast would assist in anyway they can seeing as we are 99% UK Based should u decide on that angle. :)
contact us here:- graham@westleeds.org and we`d be happy to help.

<> Erica Hill<> ;)
That'd be great exposure for AH and see more targets flying along ;) .
I love watching TSS I saw that they had a Saitek HOTAS for their ultimate gaming system 6.0,they should have bought themselves a Coug :D .
Wicked send my regards to Patrick and Leo the TSS uber dudes :D .

I thought I'd dig up this post instead of creating a new one.
It's been about six months but it looks like AH may grace the airwaves yet. I talked to the producer who is in charge of the LAN parties on the show and he just downloaded AH today. He asked about joysticks and I told him to just get some kind of twisty sticks like the MS SW. They need 4 setups for the LAN Party. I offered to bring in my own TM Cougar and Elite rudder pedals to show the high-end of JSs.
Now most of the time the games used in the LP haven't really gotten much individual attention. I'm hoping to convince the producer to at least do a segment on the game and hopefully MMOLFS in general.
I'm not sure if it will make next week's LP(6/26?), or if it will be a bit longer. The fact that he told me he was downloading it was a pretty good sign though.
I'll keep y'all posted when I learn more.
Reminder,
"The Screen Savers", M-F 7pm EST on TechTV (check local listings)
Lan Parties are on Thursdays.

Wicked,
I'm up in San Rafael (20 miles north of San Francisco) and I'd definately be willing to help if I can.

I cant watch that show. That older host is terrible. Next time you watch note how many times he will interupt his guest and explain their product for them instead of allowing the guest to speak. Guys all about getting himself over on camera.

Hello Sunking,
I disagree.....but you are entitled to your opinion. I still like the show and like how "the older guy" - Leo explains stuff.

Wicked, you need to get a camera to the AH convention in July! For what it's worth, I planned and executed a demo of AH for the Air Force Academy here in Colorado Springs. We did a presentation (including a music video intro) and then ran a demonstration mission. We had the Buccaneers (my squad) fly a JABO mission in P-38's against, with 109s scrambled in defense. The Buccs like formations:). What really impressed the colonel was when we told him they were Germans we were fighting against.
"Sure, I know those are German fighters," he remarked.
"Yes, Sir, but what I mean is those are Germans, IN Germany, flying those 109s" I replied.
His reply was simply, "Outstanding!"
If I can be of any assistance, let me know. I'd e-mail the music video, but it's 135 megs.:D
-
Hey Mac I think that could be on Martin Sgt's new show ,
the tittle would be "MMOGs -gamers Exposed" or "MMOGamers gone wild" :D
I don't know I think Leo and Pat are the best show hosts TSS has they're like the dynamic Geek duo.
BTW Erica Hill left Tech TV now she is in CNN :(,yet they Still have Sumi Das :p <>

Of course, a H2H Arena could provide an easy solution to acquiring a "controlled atmosphere".
