well ... in fact it's a rightwing governement which got this clever idea :p
in fact the lfties just added VAT over this ...

Worth noting that in countries like France and Spain, diesel costs only about two thirds the price of gasoline. 75p per litre here. :( The most expensive fuel in the world (95 octane unleaded).
In southern Africa, it's about 25p/litre, but I wouldn't move there for all the tea in China. Come to think of it, I wonder how much tea costs in China...
-
87 Octane was $1.18 here (OH) this week until Venezuela shut down. Now it's back up to $1.31.
-
Ripsnort - Yes, in Europe, road fuel is artificially expensive - because of taxes. Under the current Labour "Government", fuel in the UK has gone from 57p/litre to almost 80p/litre. The joke is that diesel, used largely for commerical purposes, costs even more. Now whereas France, Spain and other countries appreciate that to make a litre of diesel needs much less crude oil than to make a litre of 95 octane gasoline and therefore give the motorist a tax break (lower cost/litre), in the UK they take the opposite stance. They figure that because diesel cars can go much further on a litre of fuel than the equivalent gasoline powered car, that diesel drivers have lower fuel bills and can therefore afford to pay more tax - hence higher price. On this, I agree with Lazs - typical socialist (Labour government) thinking.
Go to Hobbs Marine on the Thames, not far from here, and you can buy diesel for the boats at around 30p per litre - well under half the cost of road diesel. But it's the same fuel! Almost. Non-road diesel contains a dye, and other chemical "signatures". Get caught using this in a road vehicle on the public roads, and you could be hit with a VERY big fine.
-
we have gas tax here too. the stupidest thing our legislature (state) has tried lately is they want to double the registration fees for the hybred cars (8o mpg). they figure that they don't pay their share in gas tax to use the road.
by the same logic they should be paying me to drive my truck.
-
Our gas costs us $4.50 per gallon (equivalent, because it is litres here too) :(
-
93 octane!!! I would love to buy 92! toejam I put in my tank is 91 and I have to run less lead in the sprk... down to about 450 hp in my big block... I well... time for a blower to go with them lousy pistons.
beetle...diesel is about 2/3 the cost of high octane here too.
for you socialists... don't worry about your high gas prices... think of all the great things you are getting in return for your tax money.... heck.. you wouldn't know how to spend the money anyhow.. best that your government take it away from you and distribute it properly.

Minimum I can run is 91 octane. I haven't found any 93 octane in this area yet...

You can't be refering to me. We have no public health care system, no welfare, and no income taxes.
Yes, part of the reason the gas is high is taxes, in the form of import duties, but it is also because we have to bring it here already refined from the US.
As far as government taking away and re-distributing it, I'd say that you are being hypocritical here lazs. Remember our discussion about the IRS?

Yep. I believe many countries price it that way. I only know about France & Spain, but maybe Italy is the same and probably most of the others.
My Beet1e would run on 1* (91 octane) as it has only a 7:1 compression ratio. But 1* is no longer available. In fact we don't have any "leaded" fuels here any more. The choices are 95 octane unleaded, 98 octane unleaded, diesel, and LRP - lead replacement petrol. I use LRP in the Beet1e even though it's a 4* fuel - way in excess of what that Beet1e needs. It would run on unleaded, BUT... the engine design is old, and I don't know if the valve seats would be hard enough to run on unleaded. The Golf V6 is perfectly happy on 95-unleaded.

98 octane unleaded,
drool
-
$1.54 for low test... 87 octane...
-
Wonder what the next Oil War will cost. Maybe we should feel lucky that it will be paid for by (our grandchildren's) income taxes, instead of today's gas taxes.
-
$1.25 - $1.29 for 87 octane
SOB
-
1.45 for 87
-
Don't drool wlfgng. There are a few ways to calculate octane ratings of fuel. I do not know if England and the U.S. use the same method.
-
when i used to race my dirt bike i use 108 octane rather expensive but wow what a difference, btw retired that 3 years ago
-
$.92 for 87 octane, $1.22 for 93 octane...
-
Austin Tx
Monday $1.23 for 87 to 1.34 for 91.
Today $1.09 for 87 to 1.23 for 91.

What a surprise... gas is more expensive here than almost anywhere else in the U.S... I think the one exception is Death Valley.

where do you find 93 in portland. I've looked around and with the alcohol they are required to put in I've found nothing over 91.
although I've never heard any 'pinging' with the volvo, It says it requires 92 an I suspect that the computer retards the timing to alow for lower octane. ( It does seem to have a bit more power when I've been able to run a few tanks of 93 through it while working out of town)
-
$1.17 at ARCO here in Seattle
-
93 is 2.09 here on mvy. It goes to 2.25 on occasion :(
