The choppers were probably called out as "rescue" in case the plane ditched or crashed outright.  No doubt SOP when a mayday is called in.

Well, in the US (as far as I know) we don't scramble helicoptors, just fighters. So what does that say about the US :D

If there was a danger that the soccer fans were planning on intentionally crashing the 737 into a government building or soccer stadium ;)  I'm sure fighters would be called out. And if a plane were to call mayday here (meaning a crash was imminent) rescue choppers would be airborn in minutes.

The aircraft was coming into British airspace from the south and it was decided to put down in Cardiff so that no populated areas would be flown over.

The 2 helicopters scrambled were from base at Kinloss in Scotland (500 miles away), however what the story doesnt say is that these 2 were on exercise in the Bristol Channel (about 10 miles away).  The reason they were scrambled was in case the 737 went down before it reached Cardiff.

I was just on a 737 this week for a 2-hour flight.  It was a comfortable enough ride, but the cabin is so small I don't know how the Celtics would've been able to get their pikes drawn and torches lit, what with the low ceiling and all.
