Title: Dream arena
Post by: Brazos on August 02, 1999, 08:40:00 PM

Arriving on time, I took a seat amoung the other pilots in the briefing room. We chatted for a few minutes until the group leader took the podium. "Gentlemen,' he said, 'this is our mission today." The room grew quiet as the map was flashed upon the screen. The Solomon Islands were surrounded by Port Moresby to the west, and Santa Cristobal to the southeast. His pointer highlighted a red fleet in the narrows between New Britain and New Ireland. "This is the last known position of the AI Japanese Invasion Fleet. It consists of troop and support ships bound for Port Moresby." He then highlighted two more red fleets north of Bougainville. "This is the last known position of the Japanese strike fleets consisting of the carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku. To the south steams our Task Force 17." He now highlighted three blue fleets southwest of Guadalcanal. "These consist of the carriers Lexington and Yorktown, and nothwest is our AI Task Force 44, made up of cruisers to intercept the invasion fleet."

"It will be up to us to find that enemy task force and stop them from sinking our cruisers, thus allowing the invasion force to succeed. Failing that we must sink those invasion ships ourselves, all the while protecting our own task forces from attack." The map was overlayed by lines and zone markers for our plans. "To do that we will send the Lexington north to find and destroy those enemy carriers. The Yorktown will steam northwest to CAP the cruisers and hunt the invasion force. Gentlemen the brave men defending Port Moresby are counting on you."

The excitement in the briefing room was building. As we captured the map plans to our kneeboards, I felt the tension rise. Soon I would be in a desperate battle, in which our forces would be split to defend and attack. My navigation would have to be perfect, as that was a big ocean to be lost in. The carriers couldn't send us homing signals for fear of drawing enemy attack. I did have my 8x binoculars to help identify the ships below, but I had to find those ships first. I followed my group down to the hanger deck to oversee the loading and fueling of my plane. Thinking of the enemy pilots doing the same routine, I vowed to win the day.

My dream arena - I'd like to see a "furball area" in the middle like the old symmetrical water terrain, distance between the fields arbitrarily set to be about how far it takes for a spitfire to climb to 10k by the time you get to the other field.  Guaranteed furballing, maybe make these fields uncapturable?  Very easily capturable?  Large-type fields but without bombers enabled?  Something to encourage furballing in this area anyhow for those who enjoy doing that.

The rest of the arena should have variety...  I'd just rather not have to fly very large distances to get to enemy fields.  Most of the current WB MA terrains feel a bit too big for me, and the large distances tend to keep the fights clustered at only a few points on the map, the points where each country is closest to another.  A tighter spaced map will let the fight spread out more by making it possible to fight at places other than the "front lines" without a half hour drone to the fight.

IMHO.

I was thinking almost the same thing eagl. In WB the main arena is (or pretends to be) more then just an eternal fur ball. This leads to folks screaming at each other for not helping them out in their personal quests. I would really love to see an undisguised furball arena, a place for a quick fix, to get warmed up before the real action or train gunnery and close in ACM.

Just a very small symmetrical map with 6 fields, 2 for each country (one rear and one front), air launch at 10k on rear fields and no field captures.

Main thing is that it should not be an easy mode arena, but ‘lite’, a place apart from the ‘real’ action in the strat arena. The problem of course would be if everyone stayed in the furball and no one went in to play in the strat arena.. I don’t think that would be a problem though if the furball arena was just that.

If this furball arena could be built in to the real arena somehow, it might work even better..

Dream arena has fights above 1km involving other plane types than Spitfire IX. And those other fighters are not heavy P-51s flying under 1km to an enemy field either.

I do recall seeing fights quite often above 5km in AW, and seeing guncams of such as well. Can't say the same about WB though - and I don't refer to gun cams now hehe. That's something I have been 'screamin' deamon over europe at under 1km' for ages. Higher altitude flying would be welcome.
