Title: cool museums in florida
Post by: udet on December 14, 2002, 07:47:42 PM
there are 2 cool warbirds museums in florida, relatively close to eachother. One is in Titusville, right by KSC. They were restoring a Wildcat the first time I went there, and the second time, when I went in for an airsho, the completed? wildcat was out on the tarmac, cowling removed and the nice radial engine shining like new.
The other museum is in Kissimee, and you can actually fly AT-6s. I got to see a B17 being restored. The gear was lowered, and I put my head in  the nacelle of one of the engines from below. The instrument panel was almost finished, but 3 of the engines, and the turrets were on the ground by the plane. There were also 2 B25s on the tarmac being restored to flying condition, and a worn A26. I also saw the fuselage of a P40,also being restored. Both places are a must-see.
Tell me if you went there, or post pictures. I haven't any yet.

Also the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensecola.  Been there at least 30 times seriously hehe... something new everytime.  A bunch of cool WW2 planes there, but nothing rare.  They have a cool exhibit on some planes that were found in lake michigan (one of those lakes at least)  If anyone is in the area you should check it out.  They also have a cool recreation of that bar in Cubi Point, but since the original burned down none of the squadron paraphanalia stuff is there, just post vietnam-era squadrons.

I have some pictures of the Fw-190F8 and the F4U they are restoring at Riley's museum. I was there spring 2001 when they were working on the wings of the B-17 and re-working the fuselage skin as well. I will have to dig those pictures out of a box since I just moved.

Actually the Naval Aviation Museum has many rare planes.  They might not look rare but they are, many are the only kind left in the world, the Vindicator is one example.  Plus the sbd-2 a pearl harbor and the only known midway survivor.  Throw in the nc4, f4b and sparrowhawk and you got some mighty fine rare, rare birds.
