Son and I went to shooting range for first time in months. I did this from 25 yds. It was about 35-40 degrees too (brrrr factor). What do you experienced gun dudes think of this? fair shooting? My son thought it was pretty good. ;) :p
-
a little loose, but considerin' you were shivern' not to frickin bad!
-
oh, where you standing? or resting your hands/elbows?
-
I would like to say I was standing shooting behind my back, but I digress, I was resting my arm. ;)
-
Good thing that target wasn't armed....
:)
-SW
j/k of course, that ain't too bad... I like to shoot shaken up beer cans (crappy cheap beer of course) tho... cuz they explode.

at least the paper is dead ;)

I don't know much about that gun. As a rule... from a rest...I figure any gun or load that makes a group at 25 yards that is bigger than my fist.. needs work.. still... that is a usable group and about average for the guys that go to the range and plink away with autos.
If the group didn't spread out much more than that at 100 yards then it's retty darn good.

100 yards? The length of a football field? With a hand-gun?
Jeeze...I pity anyone who pisses you off enough to make you shoot at 'em lazs.
Are you guys sure you mean yards..and not feet?
-
I had a Mak90, a cheap Chinese AKM. At 100yards it would do like 8 inches.
I have (still) a ruger blackhawk, single six imn .357 that I could keep them all in the 8 inches at 100 yards with from a rest.
I prolly could not do it now, I do not shoot enough.
Hblair, I say that aint to bad for an auto, what is it a sig229, 228?
9mm?

WOW...I'm going to shut up now, before Rip, Swoop or Puck says anything about my efforts at the Con.:o
-
That was 75 feet for Hblair, Curval. (he said 25 yds) Your first target was 25 feet. ;)
Incidently, the guy that amazed me was Swoop. At 75 feet (25 yards) he had all his shots inside the outermost circle(black circle on Hblairs target), standing, no support (cheater Hblair!) ;)

shhhhhhh Rip.

Curval, in your defense, all I can say is:
You never shoot your best game of pool with someone else's pool cue...
;)
-
For the record..I didn't touch anyone's "pool cue".;)
Besides...I never got any formal instruction with a hand-gun and didn't use any breathing techniques or anything that first time that day. I just got up there and let 'em rip. My later efforts..which even you admit vindicated me somewhat..were the result of me rembering how to fire a rifle and applying the same logic with respect to breathing.
...also, when I was in the reserves they put me on the GPMG. With that thing you don't need pinpoint accuracy...being behind a wall wouldn't even help ya if I was firing that thing. It would tear through two layers of concrete block.
-
I was speaking in "Cliche" mode...meaning, if you had your own firearm, and practiced with it, you'd do alot better. I was pleasantly surprised I did okay considering I hadn't been "plinking" in some years, and used someone elses pistol to boot.
-
Yah but with the Mak-90 you have 30 or 40 rounds before reloading !! ;)

My .300 H&H Mag Winchester Model 70 will shoot under Minute of Angle (.3/4 inch) at 100 and 200 from a bench. My Ruger M77 in .308 will shoot under 1/2 inch.
:D

Most good rifles will shoot around 1 MOA. one inch at 100yards.. I can get 8-12" groups at 100 yards with my 7" redhawk in 44 mag.
curval... wanna bet I can keep all the rounds in beetles VW at 400 yards? Do you mind beetle?

Fine looking son Hblair, do you clean the weapons with your son yet? Get 'em in a good habit, young! My 7 yr. old can break down my 1100 (rather simple) but he's alittle messy with the oil :(
-
Wow!
All my bullets usually hit the red thingy in the middle.

My Model 700 .308 will shoot just over .308 at 100 yards. ;)

GtoRA2, it's a p229 .40cal
Rip I don't let them near the gun, I keep it locked up in the toolbox in the truck with me. Even looking at that jpg with the empty gun with the slide back pointed in dylans direction gives me the shakes. Guess I need to loosen up a bit.

hblair that's not bad shooting for a casual shooter, assuming that the number of holes in the target is the number of rounds you put downrange :) Practice makes perfect and I suggest joining a local club if they offer courses. The NRA has a lot of different competitions and chances are you might find one of them fun enough to get you out on the range more often.
When I was shooting standard pistol in college (.22 cal, one handed grip), I'd put all shots except stoopid twitch-pulls in about a 5-6 inch circle at the competition range, but I can't remember what the exact range was. 20 or 25 yards if I recall correctly, but I don't remember. I practiced a lot though plus the coach said I'm a natural. My rapid-fire accuracy was better than my slow-fire accuracy, which drove the coach (ex-olympic shooter) nuts. Too much caffine was the culprit methinks, and I got knocked off of the first team prior to nationals by another shooter who drank less mt dew and wasn't trying to finish a computer science degree. I was ok with the pellet guns but just not quite consistent enough day to day to beat the really talented guys, and I only shot my senior year so I didn't have much of a chance to improve over time.
My browning buckmark is more accurate than I am, but I'm not satisfied with the grip. I'd like to find a custom wooden grip with the little adjustable platform and finger notches, but so far every store I've been to just gives me a goofy look like I'm asking for something really weird. I guess I should go to more competitions and ask the competitors where they get their equipment. I'm not going to spend $4000 for a Pardini though...
I learned a lot of good techniques from reading cheesy-but-historically-accurate westerns, and my dad was an expert marksman in the marine corps so he taught me everything he could whenever we went out shooting.
With my beretta .40, I can group 40 rounds in a 10 inch target at 25 yards without bracing and I've shot expert (wimpy USAF course, not the more challenging navy course) in the old short-barrel military S&W .38 revolvers, 9mm beretta, and M-16. The only time I missed expert on a military range was when I'd just completed 400 pushups that morning and was having muscle spasms in my arms while shooting. I still got 25/40 shots on target, but the others went into the dirt and I think I lofted one or two over the 30 ft tall backstop  I almost pulled myself off the line because I was a true hazard to the world, but I figured as long as I didn't actually drop the gun nobody would notice
My best ever rifle shot was a 6-round group the size of a quarter at 200 yards. 7mm remmington magnum, browning A-bolt with the BOSS anti-recoil and barrel tuning system. The next dozen rounds expanded to a 3 inch group due to quickly growing shoulder pain from the recoil. On the way home I stopped at a gun store and bought a shoulder pad :)
There are books on shooting technique too, so maybe check the local library or NRA catalog.
-
Most handguns should shoot under 4" at 25 yards. My 44's shoot about 2" from a rest. But... If I can cover my group with my fist I'm happy. A 50 yard group that is all in the black is pretty decent too.

ROFL! You have as much chance of doing that as I have aiming a gallon of gas into a car's fuel filler inlet in Oregon. And for the same reason - not allowed. You can't bring your gun anywhere near my beetle, and I can't pump gas in Oregon. So try the next best thing - talk to my beetle in your best Alec Guinness accent, and see if it moves - lol.

This is such BS. You guys have any idea what I hae to go through just to shoot a .22 handgun? :(
I hate you all.

you don't need to loosen up at all- i felt the same way looking at that picture, it's the first thing i noticed. but obviously the gun is empty...
think of it this way hb- it's a much better thing to have kids that are educated about guns and know how to handle them safely and properly than to have kids that are mystified by them and see them as 'forbidden fruit'.
you might be saving their lives without even knowing it.

Handguns are bad for you. If you even look at one you're lible to want to run around shooting innocent people. That is, of course, if the gun doesn't go off by itself and shoot you and everyone in the building. Guns do that you know. God forbid you touch one. Then everyone in your family will become kill-crazed maniacs and start killing whole resturants.
:D

I felt the same way. Then I noticed the action was open.
To this day my dad says the reason I am safe around guns is that he made it a rule to stop what he was doing and show me a gun (He had over 100 at one time) if I asked him. Guns were no big deal to me. I knew they were dangerous and that I had to handle them carefully, but they held no mystery for me.
That is one of the secrets. Let them see it. Buy a .22 so that when you go shooting the kid can go with you. Teach him.
I shake my head sometimes. Parents who wouldn't dream of not teaching their kid to swim (just in case he falls in) keep them from guns so that if they do get around them, they don't know how to act safely.
Three rules:
1. The gun is always loaded unless YOU check it.
2. Never point it at anything you don't want shot.
3. Check what is behind your target.
If you teach your child these three rules, they will be able to enjoy a life of shooting sports.

If you'd like some more opinions on handling guns around children, visit http://www.thefiringline.com and go to the "General Discussion" forum. There was a thread in there recently along those lines. Fathers AND mothers gave their opinions on how to handle things. They're good people.

The late Elmer Keith practiced long range gunnery with large caliber (.44 and .45 caliber) pistols. He hit targets at an honest 600 and 700 yards, in front of witnesses.
All you wusses just SHUT UP!

MT,
Bob the Nailer uses a sniper rifle, with a scope. Elmer used iron sights and a set of squinty eyes.

Damn, missed this yesterday.
The funniest single comment I heard at the con was from Rip when I heard him ask Puck if he'd loaded blanks for you.......
ahem. Anyway, Hblair I'd put my target up from the con for ya......but Puck stole it, prolly waiving it around his buddies every friday claiming it's his......and none of em have noticed it looks exactly the same each week.. I still wish we'd dragged Phantom4 down the range, he was a Marine Corp pistol champ.

I fired a few guns at a range in Las vegas this year. First time ive ever fired a gun.
I think i used a barretta 9mm a Mp5 machine gun and FABULOUSLY a Mp40 WW2 type machine gun :)
I fired at the full length of the range which I'd guess was 30 or 40 yards, cant really remember but it was a long way.put it this way i couldnt tell where id hit until i moved the target closer :)
What i found really suprising was how easy it was to hit even at the full distance. Now ive seen it , if anyone points a gun at me from anywhere, even a football pitch length, I will not be dumb enough to try to run away! I'll put my hands up and pray!. If they decide to fire even a complete novice like me could hit with little difficulty.I must say its was a real eye opener considering all we brits ever see is movies of guns.We have a false hollywood impression of their accuracy.
The MP40 was a beautifully stable weapon!, I used the 'osama bin ladin' target and i blew him to peices :) much to the amusement of the gun shop owners :D All my bullets were on the target figure.
My baretta pistol shots were standing without rest and i again hit all on the figure.Got him between the eyes even :)
After seeing those circle targets i wish id tried those to see if i could bunch em better but i was having more fun blowing sadam hussains balls, eyes and nose off :D lol
they said 'damn fine shooting' so i suspect i did pretty good. ill try to get a pic of the targets on here so you guys can critic them :)
kept em for posterity hehe

get glasses or stop impersonating a redneck :)

st santa... yep... it's a pity but... if you visit I will let you shoot a variety of firearms... best I can do. It's up to you to fight back against nanny.
hazed.. I have noticed that, with first timers, there is a huge difference in shooting ability even tho I am instructing them all the same way.. I would probly have said that you have "natural ability". It is unfortunate that you cannot develop your abilities and enjoy the shooting sports where you live...
Elmer Kieth developed the 44 mag and.... the semi wadcutter bullet from 44 special overloads. He was a great shot. There is a guy now that shoots balloons at 600 yards with a 6" Smith in 44. Watched him do it on some Turner outdoorsy show.... was amazed.

smart idea letting yer kid stand where the gun is pointed, but I can tell no clip, cocked back showing empty...
Id say thats not too bad...
-
Alot Of chithouse snipers out there LOL
DANG good shootin i think .
Hell If you can hit center mass at 25yds w/ a hand gun i think thats great!
-
My dad made it his duty to teach me and my brother about guns as soon as he could. I shot my first gun when I was ten (20 guage shotgun) and every once in a while my dad and my brother and I would head to the range and shoot off a few round of Dad's .38.
I know how to break down most semi-automatic pistols and can take apart an M-16, but I digress.
Bottom line is...I'm not a crazed killer...nor do I envision killing people. Once I'm old enough to shoot alone, I will. Kids need to learn early on that guns are not toys...are not to be played with.
Check chamber, check target, check backgound is what I've always been told.
-
Well in 95 I was a Ma duce instructor at Baumholder, I can put 6 touching at 10 meters and a whole belt in to the drivers compartment on a BDRM at 1200 meters..... ont the flip side if I didnt shoot well my family didnt eat Cuz the Army didnt let you reup if you couldnt shoot. Now days I do Black powder and consider 5 rounds in the size of a soft drink can good <@ 15 meters> it all depends on practice any one can be good.

You will stop talking about this or I shall send Nanny on you.
Annoying stupid laws here :/
-
Lazs, for an old codger sounds like you're a heckuva shot. Thanks for the info guys.
Stsanta, not only are our gun laws much less restrictive here, but here's the shooting range close to my home that is maintained by none other than the state. Open sunrise to sunset, the very restrictive rules are as follows: Don't shoot the place up! Sorry man. :D ;)
-
hblair.. that is a beautiful range.. It makes me recall what we are losing in California. I am a decent shot but most of the people I know shoot about the same.. I may be a tiny bit better than some at longer ranges tho. At the range I like to shoot at the 50 yard line when I'm not with others. I have allways shot wheelguns tho and they tend to shoot a little tighter at the longer ranges. (yeah I know... some of you have gee whiz accurized autos that will group 1" at 25 yards... but how well at 50 or 100? ... 200?) And hblair... I gotta wear glasses to shoot now.
I think you are showing good sense with your son. the gun is very safe IMO. I also think that it is best to allow kids to handle firearms under supervision since it helps satisfy their natural curiosity.
I guess I just don't get it.. I can understand a government being afraid of firearms... I can even understand some women being afraid of firearms.. but anyone else? sheesh... What's the world coming to?

The best part about that pic is that the gun barrel is facing right at the kid! I know it's probably empty, but still freaks me out.
-
Yeah barn, I had just fired the last round and had counted ten shots. The slide came all the way back telling she was empty, but still the pic does look sacrey. But hey dude I've seen you on TV handling your piece. It's a wonder you haven't blasted somebody by now. ;)
-
I didn't used to be interested in guns at all lazs, but going to the range and shooting is pretty fun, it's helped me to become comfortable with my gun and all. Good idea about buying a .22 to teach the boys with. Lazs, you'd make a good southerner. It's time for you to move man. :)
