Title: thanks staga..
Post by: lazs2 on December 18, 2002, 08:43:07 AM
For sending me the Finnish Hot Rod magazines.   The best are called 'V8"..   Very high quality glossy paper and slightly larger magazine than ours.   The photography is excellent (can't speak for the text)   the stuff I could read (406 sb is universal) was accurate.

The cars... they were great!  excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail that would rival the best shops in the states.   the stance and "look" were perfect in allmost all cases... the kustoms were custom and right... The retro's were perfect and the rat rods were the best I've seen..

The people... It looked like a younger set than here.   They seemed to be having more fun too.   More relaxed people actually using the cars... no trailer queens with gray haired old fart owners who didn't have a clue what was done to their car... It looked like they all were owner built.   One disturbing note.... all the couples looked like brother and sister .

Also... the mix.. low buck rods were mixing with high dollar cars... Harleys and Hot Rods were combined as were show cars and things like hillclimbs... Lots of pics of guys actually driving their cars (imagine that!)

The women were good looking if a little pale.

All in all.... I would love to visit... bet I could talk to those guys and never speak a word of... what is it?  Finnish?

"The women were good looking if alittle pale"

Yeah, but they're also pink, so don't complain. ;)

They were healthy looking and... they seemed happy.   If they didn't speak english they might even be perfect.

lazs,

Finnish women are dangerously cool. If you go over there there's a significant chance you'll 'go heart of darkness' and never come back to CA., USA. :)

np Lazs, It was a pleasure to get rid of those magazines.
One reason why we have plenty of old U.S cars here is that the tax when importing them is pretty low if car is over 25years old.
In mid/late eighties it looked that -59-60 Cadillac was the most usual U.S car here. Some of them were restored pretty nicely and when our currency went down some of them were sold back to the States with pretty good price.
I like american cars myself too, guess it started in mid seventies when my uncle bought a Ford Torino 2D HT with 428 Cobra Jet and Chevrolet Impala (454 IIRC).
After oil crise when the cost of fuel rose those cars were pretty cheap to buy in here.

"The women were good looking if a little pale."
- Yeah, wonder how pale would you been if we would drag your bellybutton from your sunny State to the land where 4-5 months of the year are dark, cold and rainy.

btw someone speculated that our climate is one reason why most cars are pretty well build. Most people don't drive their U.S cars in winters and in 4-5 months you have plenty of time to polish your bumbers in a garage with your friends sipping beer and talking dirty.

Merry Christmas to you all !

Title: Finnish Folks Rock!
Post by: TWOLF on December 22, 2002, 11:49:47 PM
I served with a lot Fin Soldiers in the Former Yugoslavia while on Camp Able Sentry in the mid 90's.  Some great folks there.  Lappenkulta (spelling?) is pretty good beer too!

They have a saying in the Lapland (upper portion of Finland) that I will try to repeat here.  "Toda bakini Jad Jo!"
(I am fairly sure I mangled the spelling so please be kind in the
flames)

If I remember correctly, it means SHUT UP AND DRINK!.
