I total agree with Hans! What the hell is going on in the main arena? Whats the name of game here? Is it a team deathmatch, cuss it sure seems like one. Why capture bases? Whats in it for your country? Wheres the strategy here folks? How does your country win a tour? I've asked this question before and never got a satisfactory answer? So i put it to you HT? Does a country really win if they kill all the bases of any given counutry? If so why dont we have a reset counter/stat so we can measure our success as a TEAM. Every wonder why no one gives a rat's bellybutton about doing anything but furballing? Please lets get some direction here. WW2online i think is made for guys that want to fight a war, not mindless battles. I bet their FM is not going to hold a candle to Ah, if they can get that crate off the ground.

Yes, M8, think the same.
I im relatively new to AH (few months) but i have sometimes been frustrated because noone wants to play in a team.
It is often really hard to get someone to goon a field when there is a furball going on nearby. These folks jsut spawn and spawn but always in ftrs.
One of the rare exceptions is when im online with most of the squad (which happens rarely too, since I live in Germany) and we can put something up together.
Don't get me wrong, I like to furball too, its a great thing, but doings things for a greater meaning (Oh boy, I sound like patton (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) ) is great fun too.
I think there would be much more participation on that if there was mor motivation. I cought myself sometimes thinking "If we force a reset - then everything will just start over and then NME will just have as many fields as we have..."
I dont know how we could add motivation, but I think if there was more it would be an even greater experience.

I know what your saying lava, but consider a few things:
1. Aces High is played by people from all over the globe speaking different languages, playing in different timezones. The conerstone to good strategy is a central chain of command. This cannot exist on a country level because of the very nature of no one person, or group of people are dedicated to strategic planning for the entire country. This is where squads come in to the play. These are smaller groups usually made up from people that are on at similar times, speak the same languages, and often have a leader (CO) and even a chain of command. So from this perspective: "its what *you* and *your sqaud* make it."
2. some people just want to dogfight, couldnt give a rats bellybutton about teamwork, and thats their prerogative. So they probably join a squad that shares their philosophy.
At the end of the day HTC provides the tools (and there is becoming more), but it is *you* that has to use them.

in an online game long ago with many a player the war was won by bombers destruction alone. capture was absent.
upon destroying all structures the screen would go to orbit around each players aircraft and the host announced which side won the war. the mission was completed and a new scenario began.
then the arena would reset with a NEW MAP each time the war was won rotating about 5 different maps.

Sorry gents, I just gotta wade into this one.
First off there IS no strategy to AH. There is no "end game" scenario here. At this time a country cannot be shut down totally as in the old AW. (dunno about AW anymore, been gone too long)
All game play in AH is based on 3 things. A ground combat, an air to ground combat and an air to air combat.
Capturing fields temporarily is all you can do to show a gain on the "other side".
The closest thing to a "strategy" is to hurt the other sides dar, and home base to keep the dar down for what? Two whole hours. With the Lanc., one player can take out the dar now.
The main combat I have seen is an endless succession of air to air combat and that is with EVERY terrain. You shoot someone down and they come back very soon. You get shot down and you replane as fast as you want. Now just how Quake like is that???? Very!(as far as I guess, I have never had Quake or played it even the demo's) It always has been and it will continue to be that way.
That type of game play is what the majority of the players WANT. That is why there is a variety of planes for EACH player to choose from. You aren't limited to the planes a particular side has unless it is a squad thing.
The closest thing to tactics is a squad forming up for a mission to buff, jabo or just air superiority. Players can do that practically 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
Please don't whine about Quake or furballs or some other kind of play that you just don't like. The game isn't for you alone. There are others who DO like that terrain. They DON'T like climbing for 10 minutes to an hour to get to a high alt to get an advantage. They just want to get into the combat that the game was written to provide. Why should those players be locked into the other terrain just because you don't like it.
Guys, if you don't like the MA go to the scenarios or the TA. You have options.
Now flame away, my hot gear and I will likely be in the TA where I fly almost exclusively, when I have the time to fly.

Perk system could really come into its own here.
Set a requirement for number of days in a specific country.
Award gains with points in a generic container and immediately distribute.
That'd encourage teamwork.

StSanta,
Your proposal is exactly why I do not expect to fly any perk planes in the game unless they are available in TA. I won't be likely to spend the requisite "days" in the MA to "qualify" for the perk plane. In effect it makes my $29.95 worth less than other players who have the time to "invest" in the game. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif) I don't have the time to play and fly in a "smart" manner guarding my kills, grabbing alt and landing when it takes so long to do so. I read HT's and Pyro's post about how there will be points made available to all players. I am waiting to see how it is actually done. I am hoping, but do not expect it will be of any benefit to me. That"s why I am not in favor of a perk plane reward system.

Guys, thanks for the input, but I think my point is lost somewhere.
Simply question: How does a country win a tour? What movtivates a country to act as a team to strive for a common goal?
I purpose this: Set parameters as to clearly define a victory for a country, only then will TEAMWORK be needed to win.
AS of right now, I dont see any reason for any country to take fields, because the next day it will be taken back...etc. If HT had a country stat system that records each time a country was reset, then i think it would motivate plp to fly bombers and goons and work toward the goal of WINNING. We need a reason to capture fields.
put it another way...WAR is usually about Land...How does AH measure the amount of land one country has taken at the end of each tour?
Some might say what about late night milkrunners etc...Answer: Every country is gonna have a nite where they have the numbers to force a reset, it will balance out.
Here is an example of what i am talking about.
TOUR 10
BISH-10 resets....5 agasint rooks 5 against knits
KNITS: 11 resets....bla bla
ROOKS: 12 resets... bla bla
Well i think you guys get the picture....
The rooks in this tour would win the war because they took more land than the others.
Now ask yourself, why capture fields? TO WIN THATS WHY.

If you want teamwork. I recomend you join a good squad. A good squad that makes use of the mission planner can always find many a person willing to help out. Find out when squad nights are for different squads and just wait for the call for pilots. It will come. Thursday nights Funked usually has a fun mission or two for us to run (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
If I had to name 2 things that have played the biggest role in keeping me here They would be my squad, and the mission planner. Tools are there, not HTC's fault if you dont use em.
-
As far as joining a squad goes to get that stragey "feeling" I believe it is true.
JG2 flys together alot. We are alwary doing fighter sweeps, Jabo flights, Bomber flights with fighter escort. We do this to accomplish an objective. Most of the time we are successful! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) Other times not! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif) Most of us get on RW, so this adds to the fun!!
Once in awhile you can get the "team" atmosphere by two squads getting together to fullfil and accomplish a task.
If you are flying against the Knights and you run into 1 JG2 pilot you can almost be sure there are others around. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Joining a good cohesive squad is an answer to the absence of the "teamwork feeling"

I think I read something about "New scoring system"... maybe that's been included ?

Heheheh just like JG2, 9./JG 54 likes to fly squad missions. Usually we're quite easy to spot - 2-3 190A8's at 15-20k sweeping in screaming DIE ALLIED PIGDOGS!
Swag, German squads rule (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif). If for nothing else, then because we can scream SPHEEETFEURE and still sound cool (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif).

AH needs to have a mission builder/signup thingy out front in the menu so folks could sign up for the same mission. Perhaps something like a 4 person minimum and a 12 person maximun would be a way to start. And maybe give extra points for the participants in a successful team mission so that there would some incentive for team cooperation instead of the mindless furballing.

<ahem> thats 3./JG2 (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

posting a mission usually goes well - especially if it is well thought out
what doesn't go well is some guy popping up on the buffer saying GET HERE RIGHT NOW!!
and then if no one answers: WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DIMWITS GET HERE NOW!!! and then OH WELL YOU JUST DONT CARE QUAKE QUAKE WAHHHHH COOKIE!!!
most people dont like to be barked at - if you plan a mission then you know where your support is coming from - if you want to capture a field think about where the troops and air support are coming from ahead of time -
-
9./Jg 54 participates in mission by others when there are German planes included. Unfortunately, that ain't too often.
So we make our own missions. A GOOD cohesive squad that flies regularly adds *immensely* to Aces High - I don't think about team work much since it's almost automatic in 9./JG 54 - I get what I need from my squad.
Of course, we're not that many online most often. And it's irritating when you someone announces a strike, we go there, attack and then see all friendlies ignore the field and go for vulches/furballs instead of mission objective.
Their prerogative though.

Strategy in an open arena is a myth. You have tactics at best.

Maby so gadfly, but A sort time funked put up a mission consisting of jabo spit5's, we closed a Airfield and made the capture in a very short period of time. Thats what Im talking about (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) We went on plenty where we didnt RTB as well, Almost all of them to the HQ. The yak/jug mission to take out the refinery ack was a good one too. In the overall big picture of things, probably didnt mean much, but everyone involved had fun. And thats all that matters to me, enjoying myself.
This sim rocks!
-
Only hope fer the MA is the Mission Planner.. It truly rocks. Only prob is so few know how to use it or even how to join a mission... or do. And, of course; some guys just wanna furball... so we just furball while the other side runs missions.
*yawn* Oh; well.. there goes the HQ again.
I just love the MA (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)
Gotta say, the Very Best Organized 'Team play' going is a scenario.. we had 32 planes in a raid on Palermo last frame.. whotta sight; whotta thrill. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Well, I am a firm, firm believer in the idea that if you want something, you have to pay for it.
How does that relate to this topic? Well, if we want people to organise, you have to give them an incentive to do so. A bonus. A shiny thing that makes them happy to have gone thru the rigamarole in the first place. A payoff.
....a Perk Plane in this case.
Which is what HTC is doing.
Finnaly, something to fight FOR! Up till now its been personal satisfaction, but that gets dull quick.
HTC listed some of the ways to get perk points to buy plane in their last News Forum message.
- Kills.
- Base Captures
- Win the war
- Being outnumbered
Also, the scoring system is getting redone. Hopefully it will resemble a system that WarBirds had for a few months that was quite nice.
You get X ammount of points based on a starting number (I think it was 100), modified by...
- Return to base 100% points (x1).
- Getting shot down and rescued = 1/2
- Getting shot down, but captured/killed = 1/4
- Multiplied by your current kill streak (your streak ends when captured or killed). Thus you WANT to live very much. If you have a kill streak of even 3, your going to rack up the points for each new kill at triple the rate, increase you kill streak even more, and rack up points even faster and faster.
- Multiplied by a "Plane multiplier". The System assigned a point value from 1 to 5 to all airplanes. The most often used planes were 1, and the least used planes were 5. Most were between 1.1 to 2.5 or so. Thus flying a never used Macchi 202 (with a PL of 5) could net you the same points in one kill that a Corsair-C (with a PL of 1) pilot could rack up in a five kill sortie.
- Target multiplier. WarBirds didn't have this, but Pyro mentions it in his news post. Your victim's Plane Multiplier counts. If he was a common plane, he won't be worth much. If he is a rare plane, he is worth alot. Of course the rarest planes will be the Perk Planes themselves, which should make them very popular targets.
This will give the game a real boost in the exitment factor. Not only are we getting some cool planes to fly, but we also get to see a MUCH needed incentive to play hard, play well, and play smart.
I am all for it (and I don't even want to fly a perk plane).
Hans.

how do ya win a war?
By reseting another country?
Should'nt we have stats for wins?

I see what you are trying to get to but for now the answer to your question is "It doesnt". There are no overall team summaries and no country can "win the war". A country can LOSE the war by losing their last field (usually a result of being the last or the most gangbanged), and then the arena is reset and the cycle starts again.
The only purpose of the MA is to provide a means for many people of many likes and dislikes to fight. Yes it is Quake but thats what scenarios are for.
Someone else summed up the MA perfectly...its nothing more than a practice arena for scenarios.

Ptooey on score, ptooey on resetting arena. Those are just numbers and words on the screen. Defeating your opponent without resorting to cheating is the point. If your definition of "defeating your opponent" is resetting the arena or taking the other side's fields, that's just as valid as a definition involving shooting down enemy aircraft whenever and wherever you find them.
Of course, if you're not a fighter pilot, you're just a target...
