I read with dismay a report (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-519547,00.html) in today's Times Newspaper. We need more jails! We no longer have the option of Transportation - sending crims to Australia.
In the same paper I read that more armed Police are to be deployed on Britain's streets to counteract the increasing presence of criminals with handguns.
Beam me up, Scotty. I want to go HERE...

"A first time burglar who breaks into a house and steals goods of high value and does so when the victim is at home should receive a community punishment if the court plans an 18-month sentence"
Cool you get one jail free home invasion! You people are nuts.

Not all of us, ust those that read the Times.

Maybe you should get a criminal ticket... with little "punch out" dots... for every citizen.
One free burglary, one free rape, one free car theft, one free assault and one free "general" category crime (criminal's choice).
You know, everyone gets a "get out of jail free" card, like in Monopoly.
When all the dots are punched out, then the little scamp has to go to Jail for two weeks or something and also gets a STERN warning not to misbehave again.
Of course, you COULD do the reverse "transportation" idea. All the decent, law-abiding Englishmen can leave and move to some pretty island with nice beaches and leave old Blighty to your criminal element.
That would solve the problem too, I guess.

The easy answer to this problem is to pass stricter gun laws. If guns weren't so easily available to criminals there would be less gun crime. It's good that more police are getting guns though. Only the police and the army should be armed.

Just give property owners hand guns and you may see burglaries go down. As it stands now it seems like a burgler can get 2 get outs jail free cards. Do ya think that this could spark an increase in first and second offense burglers?
I bet they would best less inclined if they knew that they may run into an armed property owner. This may kill 2 birds with 1 bullet. Reduction in burglaries and a reduction in the prison population.
Or they could hand out knives if thats what Brits prefer.

It's that old "Saxons and Normans" thing they played when they were kids...
"Tommy and Geoffrey! Put down the swords and shields and do come in! It's time for Tea!"
"Awwwwwwwww... Mother!"

So... lets see... you have so much crime that you can't jail your criminals... you give your criminals a "pass" to solve thed problem... at the same time... you don't allow your law abiding citizens to have guns to stop crime or defend themselves against an increasingly bold and armed criminal class but....
you are now arming cops so that when they get to the scene of your death by a criminal they don't take any chances of being killed themselves. I bet it's comforting having a cop show up with a gun after you've been hiding upstairs while the burglar cleaned you out..
yu guys will get it in a decade or so maybe.

I've been lucky never to have been a victim of burglary. But I'm beginning to realise HOW lucky!
BTW Mr. Toad - that beach was the one you should have gone to when you flew into Nice. The beach at Nice is too stony, although the water's nice and clear. :) Not bad weather for late October. Here's another one of the beach. I picked up the real estate brochures when I was there. Also, can you check your logbook for Friday May 30th 1997 - I flew from Nice to JFK on Delta, and back on June 8.

doh! HERE's the beach...

Gee beetle, so how are those stringent gun laws working out?

well on the toward Clockwork Orange

Beetle's right. The beach at Nice is what we'd call a gravel bar here. ;)
Those logs are up in the attic Beetle. But I was flying L10's out of JFK then. If it was a REALLY smooth flight, it was me. If it wasn't, it was someone else. ;)
-
Mr. Toad, I do believe it was an L-1011. It definitely had three engines. Maybe it was a ju52 - lol. Now you must get up in that attic to retrieve your 1997 logs. Think how cool it would be if it turned out I'd been on a Toad flight.

I've got to ask...Are you serious here? Great Britain already has some of the strictest anti-gun laws around. The criminals referred to are carrying "illegal" guns (they ARE criminals after all, and by definition are acting outside the laws). Exactly what changes to the existing gun laws would you suggest to implement your "easy answer?" Washington D.C in the USA has some of the stictest gun laws in the US...and the highest violent crime rate in the country. One can argue that stricter gun laws does not equate automatically (or even usually) to lower violent crime.
Laws are a deterent only to the law-abiding. Now if you want to talk about harsher punishment for gun law violations, then you might have something worth discussing. Even then, it's all about convincing criminals that the cost of getting caught is greater than the potential benefit of violating those gun laws. Short of automatic death penalty (or maybe life-imprisonment) for using a gun to commit a crime, you'll always fail to convince the criminals...none of them ever expect to get caught anyway.
The gun-crime-law enforcement equation has a basic flaw that tends to favor the criminals. The criminals know law abiding citizens have no guns, and that the police do. Thus they have naught to fear from their potential victims if they themselves are armed. They simply learn how to avoid the police, either by working quickly or simply going to areas where police response times favor a successful criminal act and escape.
In regards to your last statement, every successful genocide in the last century has been preceded by disarming the population and leaving the police and military with the sole monopoly on violence. Those genocides were carried out either with the tacit approval of those state guardians, or worse, carried about by the very police and military that should have protected the victims.

 The thing I don't get is people don't understand that police are very rarely on scene in time to protect the general public. They get called AFTER the first shots are fired, after the home invasion ect... It is up to us to protect ourselves and our loved ones. I get so pissed when I see these so called experts telling the public to just do what ever the bad men tell them to do and you "might" not get hurt. roadkill!! This is my home, this is where I should feel safe, I have no where to go from here. So the only way someone is going to get to my wife and son is by stepping over my dead body. England has it's head so far up it's ass, Australia too. You guys will find out just how big a mistake you made when you let the goverment take away your guns, maybe when you are being led off to labor camps or gas chambers.

ra - lol.

ROFL!!! I didn't let the government take away my guns. Like the other 6,999 people in my (large) village, I've never had a gun. Never needed one. No plans to shoot anyone. :D We're so relaxed in Europe. Look at the happy people in the beach photo - not a gun in sight. :):p
Labor camps! lol. Gas chambers LOL!
Well, off to RAF Cosford now to meet a few Limey AHers.
Toodle-Pip! :D

I'm glad you think this is funny. I am a very relaxed person, and nothing is more relaxing than spending a week in the mountains, killing helpless animals. :D
