I'd reccomend the thrustmaster afterburner.(Unless you want to go for an X36/X45)

It's about $50, is solidly built, and best of all has two options for rudder control.  You can use the usual twist action(Which I find good in space sims, but a pain in flight sims) or a rocker on the rudder(Which eliminates accidental rudder while turning).

I love my Sidewinder Precision 2, has just enough buttons for every vital flight and view command I like.

what's a "mid-price" price range?

best buy had MMSFF2 for $50 after rebate while CompUsa had X45 for $60 after rebate last week - maybe this week too...

I bought a thrustmaster pro 2 shock..it craped on me in ONE week..spiking in the Y axes. I returned it for the wingman extreme 3d  FF. still only a few days old but so far so good. Looks stable in all calibrations. Some were in theis BBS someone told me they had to recalibrate the thrustmaster every HOUR but the stick its self laster 1-2 years.
compusa has the wingman extreme 3d FF for $49.99 US right now.

good luck

is it true that Sidewinder precision 2 was a shoddy made j-stick compare to sidewonder precision pro (not 2)?

but there are issues here too. Chapstick is required on the friction plate of the X45 to keep it operating smoothly. Hat switches on both brands seem to go out first." Easycor

In response to a question about a spiking thrustmaster pro 2 shock. one week it craped out

Picked up a Precision 2 last week and it's great! Plenty of throw about all three axis (about twice as much as the ol Sidewinder 3D). Yes, three axis; the throttle has 140º of movement. Rudder response both on the stick and in-games is fairly sharp. Took me almost a week to get used to the thing. Feel is, well, different. You can tell where an axis changes from one to another. Say you're pulling back and you want to roll left a tad. You'll feel a change in the stick's spring tension as you throw it left. If you're not ham-handed anyway :D

It's not a shoddy stick either. No hat switch problems (like saitek) and no funky centering (every TM stick I've ever tried). There is a lot of play in the center compared to some other sticks, though. If you're light on the touch you can probably close up the dead zone to half of the default. Just be prepared if you do that; whatever you're flying will act a bit twitchy. I'll be tearing mine apart to tighten the springs up. That'll fix it

As for the Precision Pro 2, it's the same stick. Micro$haft renamed it to the Precision 2 to shorten the title up.

I'd definately choose the Precision Pro (Precision) 2 over the Logitech.

The Logitech Wingman extreme digital 3ds just don't last very long before the handle either snaps off OR the rudder starts spiking out of control.  If you tear one of them apart they have a very cheap analog potentiometer attached in just a way that the wires connecting to it get pulled on when you rotate the stick.  It's too bad really, because it was a fairly nice stick otherwise with good feel to it.  (The Precision 2 has very weak springs.)

saitel x45 maybe not mid range but it was my sidewinder pp2 replacement...its better in every way but price, still very worth its price 60-80$ depending where yu look.
