That other thread is too long for my attention-deficient mind to read, so here's my 3rd or 4th impression of the "game" (and I use that term loosely).
First of all, I was one of the first 100 or so beta testers, so I followed this thing from inception to launch. I've tried it on 3 occasions since launch....they are still fixing bugs and other stuff that the testers brought up almost 2 years ago.
First mission...spawned a British rifle guy. Ran around trying to find a ride. Finally hopped on a truck and played "Hitchhiking Online" for 15 minutes before I got close to a fight. I hit the dirt, and look for my next cover. I take about 3 steps and get whacked by something I never saw....AI I'm assuming. Nothing like spending 20 minutes doing nothing to get whacked in 5 seconds by an AI.
Second mission...decide to try the tanks. I grab an R35 and head at top speed of about 5 mph toward the fight. I go to commanders view and see a French guy with a walker pass me on the right. Anyhow....I get about 500 yards from the FB and notice a German crawling around in a patch of bulletproof shrubbery. I hose some MG rounds at him and load HE into my cannon. I can see his feet sticking out from behind the tree ala Charlie Brown, so I start hurling HE right beside them. Every so often I stop to look around and make sure no one is sneaking up on me. All of a sudden I start hearing pings, and my crew is dead. I despawn to see what killed me. There are about 5 Germans crawling all over my tank like cockroaches with their pistols drawn! LOL Must be superior German metallurgy! This deserves another
Third mission...I take out one of those French armored car thingies. I figure if I'm going to go get killed ridiculously, I might as well get there fast and get it over with. I take my time moving from cover to cover, scanning from each spot with my binoculars. I get within sight of the target town and spot a nice place to pull into some trees and scope the town out. I careully pull between two trees and get viciously attacked by an obviously Teutonic Oak that flips my armored vehicle onto its back like a wimpy tortoise. I had no idea that the Belgian foliage was so dangerous.
Apart from that the "game" is great

German troops are experts at sneaking with satchels ;)
-
Well, I admit I killed a char yesterday by clipping into him - to my excuse he was who moved - sometimes u get killed, sometimes you get clear view of the interior! Clipping is a serious issue but OTH a tank driver whos paying attention would avoid such situations anyway!
---
Oh, and I killed a Matty in a P38!! Was standing on the other side of the river - first few shots into the tracks - he starts spinning around - some shots into the back of the turret - flames and smoke... :D

Except... they would have exploded with their satchels, now wouldn't they? ;)

Those German troops must have had some excellent body armor because they were alive and kicking all over the tank. All still trying to run "into" the tank to get a good shot I guess.
Maybe I just needed more RAM.

So what were you expecting? Did you think you were going to run in all Rambo style and take out guys while doing flips and cutting their heads off with your katana?
Your first mistake was that you didn't communicate with anyone. You can spawn as a rifleman and run to a contested down and get whacked over and over. Or you can communicate and get dropped into a meaningful battlezone with 20 like-minded infantry.
It's not easy playing infantry. There are no medpacks lying around or glowing armor of invulnerability. If the enemy has a sniper in the bushes and you don't see him. He'll kill you. If you try it again. He'll kill you again.

Again, I don't see what the problem is. Do you want the R35 to go warp speed and get l33t air off of the secret ramps around chockpoints? Or do you want it to travel at its historical speed?
If you didn't see the infantry sneaking up on you, that's your own problem. Do you think your crew would survive if someone with a pistol started firing in the view slats?
Third mission...I take out one of those French armored car thingies. I figure if I'm going to go get killed ridiculously, I might as well get there fast and get it over with. You think THOSE trees are dangerous... hit a tree going .2 mph in AH and you'll explode! So yeah, I don't know how we managed to win WWII with trees everywhere.
You're frustrated with WWIIOL because you suck at it. I don't know what you were expecting in each of your missions. You obviously just want to spawn and run off to the battle without thinking twice about what you're going to do when you get there.
Large battles take massive team efforts to win. No matter what vehicle you choose, you'll be destroyed with little trouble if you just make a b-line to the battlefield.
You need patience and cooperation to succeed in WWIIOL. I love the huge land battles. I respect the fact that I can't drive a single tank into the middle of a battlefield and expect to live. I like the coordination of flanking, ambushes... etc.

I'm sorry pal, but spending more time getting to a fight than actually fighting isn't my idea of a good time. I can bore myself just fine without paying for it.
Communication? Heh, that's a funny one. I tuned to the posted channels, I typed to several people on the origin and target channels, I got squat in return.
So...where exactly are the view slits in the rear of the R35? Hmm? Because that's right where every trooper was. On top of that, they were all prone by the treads. I guess there are view slits in between the road wheels? Yes, I can appreciate that the speed is realistically modeled. I have no problem with that, was just making a funny. What does bug me is the impenetrable foliage and the bulletproof leaves.
-
Thanks for giving me a good giggle. Bulletproof leaves. LOL
-
The difference is the GV component of AH is secondary. Whereas the ground war component of WW2OL is the primary part of the game.
And the impenetrable grass is quite annoying. I was driving along a road towards an enemy FB (got bored camping the town waiting for the attack) when I spotted a truck coming the other way. It pulled off into to the side and the troops jumped out. They proceeded to lie in the behind the grass while I unloaded Mg's and HE's at them, not understanding why they didn't die. Impenetrable foliage is, in a gamethats primary a ground war, STUPID, and should have been sorted by now.
Whenever I play I hear someone squeaking about someone else using clipping to shoot em in their tank. Again a STUPID bug that should have been fixed by now.
And last but not least, from my personal wierd experiences, one day I spotted a EI coming at me. So I readied a grenade, threw it, it landed and exploded about 1.5 metres to his right, the force threw him to his left - then he immediately shot me in the head with his pistol. I'm sorry, but... YEAH RIGHT.
I'm happy WW2OL is still going, they've suprised me. But I'm also disappointed that the silly little stuff like this hasn't been ironed out yet. I don't care about tank optics, armour penetration, and all that crap, I just want the stupid stuff fixed.

I had no idea that the Belgian foliage was so dangerous.
Well, did it not have a sign saying: "do not walk on the grass" ? :D
-
Vulcan,
The grass is not bullet proof or impenetrable.
It's those hedgerow lines or whatever tall bushes which are impenetrable though :)
plus the titan trees with titan leafs :I
but at least the hedgerows or trees aren't blowing my tank :)

Newbies never do well. If you don't want to play with others you will surely die mercilessly till you understand the war and the equipment. Real easy to walk 20 mins, cause you didn't spawn near a fight, get to the fight and someone shoots you at 200 meters. Give it another try and pick a mission from a contested town, this will tune you to the objective channel, tune one to Origin, and you will have some input for the fight. I am not surprised at the things that happened to you. Having been in the beta doesnt give you any leg up since you haven't played in, how long? Newbs need the comms more than anyone.

Raub,
It is more than obvious to me that you are not putting enough time and effort into convincing yourself that ww2ol is anything more than a highly polished turd.
Furthermore, if you were not so stupid and inept you would have had a great time and killed everyone with in visual range and then some.
Your lack of skill and intelligence with regard to ww2ol sickens me.
Not untill you have spent many many thousands of hours training to be the best virtual jogger you can be, will you be allowed to have the opinion that ww2ol is not fun.
Get back in there and suck it up. No more crying from you.

who the hell cares?
people plays what people likes to play and if WWIIOL is not their choice, well thats their business..
and hopefully they admit the same thing and not try to convince everyone that WWIIOL is screwy because they think so.. same could be said for the other side, when it doesn't serve any good to have a crusade in order to get unwilling players to play the game.
Raub's thread was polite opinion and thats his opinion based on his experience.
Of course he could have gone to contested towns and used time learn how to play it.. but the game didn't fit for him I suppose.
Raub,
Allies are known to not have communication ;)
Axis is much more talkative...

I can respect that, Fishu.
-
Raub,
What you describe very closely matches to the real military experience.

He didn't like the newbie experience, most don't:D
He played it cause he was hoping for a good time during the freebie. I hope you didn' think I was coming down on him, I was hoping he would try again and this time have someone for company.

So, tell me. How many AH preachers are over on the WW2OL boards after every new release/update touting that it's time to try it again?
This BBS is open to all, to post what they like, especially the O-Club. That's not the point.
The point is how many AH types go to the WW2OL boards and do the what HC does?
Not bashing HC, just curious.
-
Toad,
I saw AH thread in non offtopic forum of WWIIOL forums during it's last patch with stuka etc ;)
-
Please tell me who it was that posted? Just curious. Do you have a link to the thread? I'd like to read it.
-
Toad, I didn't start this one:) There are many ppl with ww2 and AH accounts. They can post anytime they wish.

Well, I also went ahead and gave WWIIOL a try...and somehow, maybe it's my masochistic streak, but I like it. Sort of.
Raub, your experiences matched mine except I never had the balls to actually take out a tank--each base only spawns a limited number of vehicles, so I didn't want to deny a decent player a useful item. I ran around as a rifleman most of the time, and died to stuff I never saw--y'know, you never do hear the one that gets you. :)
Where the game turned around for me was when I stumbled into a squad doing an op and they invited me along. Squads seem even more essential in WWIIOL than in AH. Lone-wolfing it, especially as a crunchy, is suicide. So next thing I knew I was riding along in the back of a Bedford with these guys, doing an infantry infiltration of a German-held town. It was pretty neat, and they were quite tolerant of the fact that I was, and still am, the worst infantryman in the BEF.
The best thing to do seems to be to listen to the radio for a bit and try and figure out where the fights are happening--then go to the mission list and pick a defense mission in that area. I got some on-the-job practice defending firebases. Also, to get rank, you can take defense missions (or bomber missions for the air forces), keep your head down for 10+ minutes, then exit, and you'll get promotion points. The higher the rank, the better the stuff you can use. Infantry and bomber defense missions don't require a kill--you can just spawn, sit there, and exit and get points toward the next rank. Cheesy, but people do it.
There's a lot of stuff still screwy about the game, but they've made some major improvements since I was in the beta. The netcode is still nowhere near as good as AH's, there's still some pretty egregious bugs like clipping, and flying's just ridiculous. (My one flight was in a Hurricane--I was getting 11 fps over a furball, with frequent pauses, then had a Ju 87 climb up and kill me with 4 or 5 pings, one of which must've been a 7.7mm right to the head. Chhhhyeah, riiiiiight.) But the ground war is pretty neat stuff, the gameplay's not *too* bad if you go in with the right expectations.
Some are fanbois, some are playa hatas. The truth, as always, lies somewhere in the middle.

Moose post on the community forum and we can probably get more FPS out of your rig. What is your CPU/vicard/ram specs.
