Title: You just KNEW someone was gonna do it sooner or later..........
Post by: eddiek on December 21, 2002, 09:15:14 PM
Just logged out of the MA, was furrballing at A5, and what do I see?

A Me163, tooling around A5; what is that, three or three and a half sectors away from the base where it is available?
I commented on it, was told all you have to do is keep your gear and hop from base to base refuelling along the way.
Seems maybe HT needs to make the gear auto-dump on takeoff to keep the 163 where they have it........near the HQ's.

Seems there are always players looking to exploit any loophole they can find in the game.

Im not sure I understand the problem?

It may notbe what you usually see.....but it takes time, effort and I personally dont see a big issue with it.  Its just like rearming a fighter at a base with no fighter hangars.

If someone has the time and wants to put forth the effort to base skip!  :)

I see no fun in it, but others might.

How can that be a loophole?
It's a tactic. Seems like a waste of time but it's his time.

i missed using it so much that i did that the other day, although i didn't have the gear

163 gear break off over 300mph, so it's a long tough ride to skip from base to base

landing with the skid, refueling, and then taking off again is a real trick to accomplish - ive done it once, and just getting back off the ground from the refueling pad took almost a quarter tank of gas

Bah, more power to 'em.  They had to spend the time hopping from base to base, and when they finally want to use the thing in combat they'll shed the gear one way or the other (either drop it or it will rip off).

More power to 'em.  I admit to being somewhat of an idealist, and seeing as how HTC has them restricted to certain fields, well, I figured HT and Pyro and Co. had a reason for doing that.
Who cares if in RL that attempting landings with the gear was not advised?
"...the troublesome landing skid was hydraulically retracted on take-off, along with the neat steerable tailwheel. Retracting the skid automatically released the wheeled dolly, but this had a habit of bouncing up and smashing into the aircraft or even hooking on the front of the skid. If it failed to separate, a successful landing back on the dolly was not advised; it was only accomplished once. Even Hanna Reitsch tried it once, following total hang-up, and she was severely injured... "
Forget I said anything fellas, it's just a game.........

The Me163 was suppossed to be introduced as a bomber interceptor over strat targets, now it's going to be available anywhere you like..it's B.S The Me163 needed specialist refuelling equipment, specialist retreival equipment when it landed and took a long time to retreive, clean down and then prep/refuel for another launch. To allow it to keep it's undercarriage inflight is not historical and this then allows for more unhistorical events. To have the Me163 relatively unrestricted is bad enough but to allow this impacts on the sim in too many ways.

Maybe you missed the part where he said it was in the MA?

Whats the difference between someone doing this and you fighting Spit against Spit or 109 against 109?  They are both "unhistorical".

3.5 sectors away? At what alt? The 163 can reach 60k - probably more - travelling some distance to do so, and can glide a very long way. Try it offline and see.  According to Warplanes of the Luftwaffe, 'practical range (is) 80 miles'. A sector is 25 miles, right? So that's 3 sectors right there. But it also says that the service ceiling was 40k.

On p227 of the same book: 'Heini Ditmar had the Me163 V4 fully tanked and then towed into the air behind a Bf110C tug'. Now wouldn't that be a nice surprise to have?

The Spitfire and 109 are being used properly and holes in the general gameplay are not being exploited by them where as they are by players using the Me163. The Spitfires and 109's also do not have such an impact on other facets of the arena as the Me163 has.

For what I have noticed so far the plane is only available on one field near the HQ, that's it. Never been able to take it into action my self due to this. Never seen one in the MA either.

Some players are hopping round maps and refuelling, the gear should be automatically dropped as you take off to stop this, a pretty easy way to stop it. I'll wait and see how it pans out over the next few weeks but I'm expecting the same guys who would re-plane immediately and keep re-planing till the formation is dead after being shot down by a buff formation to now just stick another quarter in the slot and up dozens of them in proportions not seen in WW2. Would also be nice to see a few random explosions on takeoff and landing the AH Me163 seems quite robust.

While you can do a bit of field hopping, it is work as others have mentioned. However, you don't fight with the gear down and once you drop the gear you won't be replaning. Well, actually you can, I've done it, but it takes a LOT of fuel to get back up which effectively makes it a one sortie plane.

I'd welcome seeing them trying the field hopping if I was into points. They would be extremely vulnerable, wouldn't they? Besides, the tater guns have to be close to hurt you.
