The debate on the actual birthday of Christ dates back a long way.  The possibility however is that the date observed by the Christian Orthodox Church is probably the closest since they follow the teachings of Christ's disciples rather then the Policies of Rome. That date is in January.  The reason for the Roman version and its popularity is due to the Roman policies of assimilation rather then simple eradication of local customs.  The Biggest Pagan celebrations of the Northern tribes of Europe all surrounded the middle of December, which marked Winter Solstice.  The Roman Catholic Church in it's efforts to eradicate everything Pagan could not preach away this custom, so it was replaced with the notion that Christ was born in December.  Hence the current customs of Christmas.  The fact of the matter though is that no one knows for sure when he was born.  If I am not mistaken, the writings of the day were unable to pin point his actual date of birth, nor were they able to say were in the province of Nazareth that he was born.  The versions of the texts most commonly referred to now (the Bibles) have been altered so many times in the last 2 thousand years that they are no longer considered reliable sources of history.   Unless of course you count those that wish to have no other source of historical information then the Bible, or texts approved by the church.

Yeah...that's true, but the original Christmas holiday as we know it was a pagan ritual. The English expanded on well before and during the revolutionary war. Soon, when English and Dutch immegrants came the the newly independant US, they incorporated the rituals in their homes.

Eventually, Americans adopted these rituals and it became an annual thing, still celebrating the pagan ritual.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it the Christian church that changed the date to Christ's birthday and named the holiday Christmas since they thought the pagans were evil, and didn't want Americans celebrating an evil ceremony?
