I know that rudders are used to coordinates turns in real planes, but this doesn't seem necessary in AH as there is auto-coordination.
So, my question is, is there any reason to use rudder in AH? Will it make turn radius smaller if you add rudder? It seems to throw off the "ball" if you use it. I've experimented with it offline and can't tell if it helps or not.
A few more questions I haven't been able to find answers to:
Is it possible to make "snap" view (f9) the default view?
Every so often when I am flying, I will hear a voice say, "Ace under attack", or maybe it's "Base under attack". Is this just for atmosphere or does it have some significance?
Thanking you in advance,
Tatzel.

You'll find more complicated moves require some rudder. As well as it greatly improves your ability to aim.
Crank your plane around in the tightest turn you can. Now test rudder to hold your nose high, low, wherever you need it.
As to snap view not to my knowledge at this time.
Its one of those things you just remember to do after loggin on.
The "base under attack" warning happens when an enemy plane gets close to the field you took off from.
IE your field is about to be under attack.

Rudder is mostly used for getting gunshots and for slowing down. When you've almost got a gunshot on someone, but he's just a bit off to one side, use the rudder to get the guns pointed at him. The other big use of rudder is to slow down, pointing the plane diagonally into the wind creates a huge amount of drag, and can do wonders to avoid overshooting(or cause someone else to).

I don't see autocoordination of rudder AH, although many other sims have it. It seems to me that any aileron use requires corresponding rudder, especially at slow speeds. This matches the real world.
At high speeds you won't much notice your turns being uncoordinated, but if you're not using rudder when turning in a stallfight, the ball well be way off, you increase drag, slow down your turn and waste energy. Which is generally a bad thing :)

Thanks Ghosth, I was wondering if it was the base you upped from or any base in your country. Keep those synapses firing :)
fuzeman <-- not a firing synapse in the vicinity.

"Base under attack" means one of your bases have an enemy nearby. To find out what base is under attack, open the map and look for the base that is flashing. If the base you are at is under attack, you will hear a siren at the tower, and at the town you will also hear a siren.

Gunner, how close does an enemy have to be to start the siren??

~25-30miles IIRC.

You can turn off the air raid siren and voice by going to the sounds option in setup and turning 'airraid' and 'warning' volumes down to zero. And I think Ghosth hit the nail on the head, almost making an understatement when he said rudder greatly improves aiming! I find that I use it so much, when it gets shot off during a fight I am in a different world, I notice the loss of it greatly.

25 miles is too much. I would say about 15 miles. For GV's its even shorter.

use rudder to control (over)speed in 109, big airbrake back there

Another use for the rudder... when I fly real low to the ground, I use the rudder to keep my nose pointed above the ground when making hard turns and going up and over hills. When your on the knife edge (wings at a 90 degree with the ground) you need your rudder to control the pitch of the aircraft.
One of my favorite rides to fight on the deck in the hills is the La7. To hug the ground, you need to pay attention to where you are pointed and use your rudders to keep your nose out of the ground when rolling or turning. When I fly like this, I am always giving it some rudder. On a good night I will get a bunch of auger kills watching people try to follow me :)

When on a hot approach to a runway, it is called a crab. twist your aircraft, this will slow u down and lose alt fast.

Aileron = course adjust
Rudder = Fine Adjust
For shooting and for E management.... It does make a difference.

If 2 experienced & equal pilots flew equal planes in a dogfight, 1 had rudder control & the other didnt. The fight would not go more than 2-4 turns.
Much like rudder adds more control, so do flaps & trim. When I started understanding flaps I started using them more, & my abilities increased. Then (coincidently) I started flying faster in MA, this led to compression, which led to a need for learning trim.
Throttle manipulation is also critical, a pilot using throttle in turns will out turn same plane going full throttle all the time.
In short the game is very detailed & the more you undersatnd & utilize--- the better pilot you will be.
