Visiting my dad and trying to help him out on his computer.
He accidentally "exported" his address book to microsoft exchange..which he doesn't have.. and I think I remember that you have to run MS Outlook to reset it.
Only I can't find Outlook on his computer. Ideas? Which MS program had that, W98 or Office or Explorer?
Also, I stuck a network card in his box and hooked up his DSL.
Install went fine, it all works.
However, on next boot is came up showing that either the Registry or the init was missing these files:
vnetsup.vxd
vredir.vxd
dfs.vxd
msnp.vxd
So, how do I find out:
1. If we really need 'em. Seems to be working ok.
2. How to get rid of the messages permanently so they don';t come up on every boot.
Thanks!

And uncheck them, or add the componets with the Network control panel applet.

Go slow, Weazel. I'm not good at this software stuff.
Everything in MSConfig has a checkmark by it and some have little windows flags and some don't. What am I looking for here to show what's missing? I looked in System.ini, btw. Is that where I should be looking?
Looked at Control Panel/networking as well. No yellow exclamation points, all looked like it was happy.
Any more tips for a software rookie?
Thanks for helping, btw.

Can't really help you on the net card... though I'm suprised to see something using .vxd drivers still.
Outlook is not bundled with an MS OS I've seen. Outlook Express is usually there, though... actually I've never seen out NOT installed on an MS product.
I'm suprised that the export function actually deleted it from the mail program he's currently trying to use. That is... just what did he export it from?

I think Outlook is included in the Windows "Office" product line
you get Outlook Express with IE - which is all the email program/newsgroup reader I need

Export from Outlook Express, Deja. Accidentally.
not finding any of the .vxd extensions in the msconfig/sys.ini. stuff.
Still trying to figure out where it's looking for it
I ran regedit and used the find function and I can find them in the registry.
Do I dare edit them out? If so, what's the best way?

I wasn't aware that the "export" function deleted the files from express... it should just create a copy in another program's format. You may want to just try an "import" function and see if that finds the file that was created.
As for the .vxd stuff... those are virtual drivers for the DOS environment. NT doesn't use them (much to the chagrin of many) but Win98 may still. Like I said... I'm suprised they were called out. But, if they were called out by the .ini of the card install program, they should have been installed at that time too. Its strange that they would be called for but not included. It may be worth it to see if more recent drivers have been released.

yeah those are either Win95 or Win98 files. My best advice is to do a search for them in Google or something similar to see what components use them. You'll probably be looking in Win.ini or System.ini if you want to remove them manually....
