Title: IL-2 question:
Post by: eskimo2 on December 25, 2002, 06:40:11 PM
I just got IL-2 for X-mas.
Neat game, but there is no gunsight crosshairs on any planes.  It seems to be way off to the left.  I can see the right tip of the crosshair on the left side of the gunsight, but can't see the center.  Can find no reference as to what is causing this.  Tried trimming the planes, still off.  Re-started the game, still off.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

eskimo

Press Shift-F1 to line up the gunsight, you can also then press END to give you a zoomed in gunsight view.

Thanks revvin!

You'd think they'd put something so basic in the darn reference guide!

umm if you look on the handy layout with all the instruments on the back side it says control keys reference. On the Far right side under Miscellaneous Controls.

It will say toggle gunsight  shift +F1

thats where they hid it :)

Also, the 3 keys Delete, End and Page down toggle zom distanced. Delete is good for longer range targets and identifing planes while Page down gives the best possibilities for SA.

Also, SHIFT D (I think) in german planes will bring up a sort of sun cover for the sight, darken the sight.

you'll probably notice that since it's so dang hard to shoot anything down in IL2, when you come back to AH, your aim will be much better and you will not fire farther than 200 out :)

I thought you had to get close to hit things in IL2 because all the planes were armed with flame throwers.:D

I did enjoy that game for a while, after weeks of experimenting with configuring the rudder i gave up.  It was always either rock solid with no use at all or it was so sensitive it swung left to right like a pendullum so i couldn't get it to stay on a con.

eskimo, make sure you update IL-2 to the latest version: 1.2
ist 2 patches : 1.1  which is aprox 75 megs, and 1.2 aprox 29 megs.

Thanks guys!
I'm having a blast with it.
I love ground attack and it's got the best ground attack features ever.

I do see the gunsight command in the guide now, figured it would be listed in views.  Thanks.

I thought the I-16 Rata could be flown by players... no?

Right now my biggest beef with the program is the view system.  I don't mind not having a 6:00 veiw itself, but by not including it,  can't see how I can get all views with 1 hat and 1 button?  In WB and AH I've always used 1 hat for Fw, lft, rt, & bck, and then 1 button for up, with a blend of these, i can get 17 directions with a 8-way hat.  In IL-2, back left, and back right are separate, so I had to choose 1 side to put on my hat, and now retrain myself to look back-left with another button/hat.

How do you guys do it?

Thanks,

eskimo

It becomes flyable when you update your game to version 1.2 IIRC.

Is there one cummulative patch?

I have the CD I received last Christmas, patched it once, and see there are MANY upgrades from this to this, then this to this, then that to that.  Ugh, I have no idea what version I have right now, and downloading many step ups seems like a pain.  I guess the Service Pack approach appeals to me  :)

Is there one whopper that does it all?  Or do I have to download, it appears, about 4 patches?

I second that... I'm trying to upgrade my box version but can't tell which upgrade(s) and in which order.. it's confusing.

Eskimo I have my up view set to a button on my throttle and use the hat switch on the trottle for my views.

fwd = 45 Degrees up

fwd right = fwd right

fwd left = fwd left

left = left

right = right

back right = back right

back left = back left

Back = look down
I modified this to look down 45 degrees to use as a "Dash board view" so I view my instruments. I have all the "words" turned off and fly with just the cockpit instruments. No speed bar in the left corner. None of that ai jibberish at the top and no sys msg on the right.

I just use the up button combined with a hat direction to view up angles. it works fine. Its the same way I have it set in ah, wwiiol wbs and il2.

I dont know what ya mean back lwft and right are seperate. They arent for me.

As for getting all the flyable planes you need to completely update to the current version 1.2 (you get 1.2ov which allows you to play with the voice msgs but it aint necessary).

http://www.il2sturmovik.com/games_elts/updates.php

Follow the link to the official update page. I think you need to download each patch (except the ones that say optional). The version out of the box is 1.0 so you need to get up to 1.2. Make sure you read what ya need. AFAIK you need each patch.

Dunno why they dont have a version that takes ya from box to current. Unless I missed something.

The view system tears it for me. If they had stick sets it would rock. Just about every game out there has stick sets.

Why it hasn't been added in is beyond me.

dunno ch hotas I got more buttons then I can use now. same when I had x36. I never needed more the 1 set. I know a few folks who fly gvs and bombers bounce there sets around. but bombers and gvs suck so i rarely fly umm.

in il2 i got prop pitch mapped to the throttle wheel. all my views gear eng zoom wep flaps tailwheel lock drop dt dash lites and few others i dont remeber all on my ch throttle.

onthe stick fire buttons trim dive flaps rad and a bunch crap i never use so i cant remember what it does :)

I've just completed a profile for IL-2 for my HOTAS Cougar and could not find enough commands to fill every button position on the stick.

I've had IL-2 since release and find it an enjoyable alternative to Aces High. Offline is fun but if you venture online be sure to download a free online game finder called Hyperlobby (http://hyperfighter.jinak.cz/) which much of the IL-2 community use to play online.

I just got IL-2 for X-mas.

Say's it all, and now that you know, you'll find tweaks on your hotas to make the views work, and the mouse view is what just makes it really cool.

As much as the limited 6 views in IL-2 seem realistic to me, and the mouse view blows away AH, I just hate the rear view looks as it doesn't compensate for a body leaning at all.

Oh well. It's still a way better flightSIM experience than most. More you fly it, the more you'll like it.

Install the boxed version.
Add 1.1a
73.4MB. It addressed the issues that required the interim patches and added some planes.

Add 1.2
28.4MB It added some planes and fixed a couple things but was mainly just a free updgrade.

Add1.2ov ONLY if you want to mess with voice files and add English or whatever other language is supported so your options are more than the default Russian or German.

If you want to add 1.2ov you MUST add 1.2 first or things will not work.

Personally, the first thing I did was turn off the text and voice in the conf. file.

If interested just open the conf file look at [game] and change
NoSubTitles=0 to =1  (note letter case, must concur.)
No Chatter=0 to =1

thx sunchaser.. appreciated as I don't have the time/patience to read all the crap on their webpage :)

now if they'd simply put the files in a list and put the readme's elsewhere.. instead of having the readmes' under each link for each file.

yeah I know.. lazy me

or better yet.. put them on the website in order.. sheesh :)

ok I'm over it (tantrum)

so just add 1.1a
and then 1.2 ?

sure seemed more complex than that at first glance.. lol

Only thing I don't like is the views, your head is stuck in one place.  You are looking right at the bar in up view, for instance.

Other than that I absolutely love the game, it is beautiful.

FM 'feels' the same as AH to me to be honest.  I can do all the stuff I do in AH in IL-2, although I can do pretty hammer heads in IL-2 that I haven't really gotten down in AH.

What he said...really dont understand the limit of head flexibility..Some like it and think its more realistic..
Thier choice I supose..I find it limits my SA and my imersion at the same time..there is that secret place over your shoulder...you can look there when you are driving your pickup..but not your FW..
Cant believe they dont add that simple thing...
But otherwise. and in spite of that....WOW.

I thought the view system was to restrictive until i mapped the mouse look onto my joystick. after that it hasnt been an issue with me.  I still wish that it had AH view system but I can live with it :)

The mouse view system works just as well in AH, I have the mousestick on my Cougar mapped for both games.
