Title: IL-2 Flight Model, how does it measure up to Aces High ?
Post by: ViFF on December 26, 2002, 07:07:55 AM
Mind you all I am not asking about the cockpit layout, gunnery or damage model which is pretty obvious they are better then what Aces High has to offer at this stage.

What I would like to know is how well they compete with Aces High's  flight model in the physics department.

Do you feel the IL-2 flight model is more realistic ? less realistic ? can you give examples ?

One example of a difference I can think of is high alitude flight modelling: In Aces high you clearly feel the loss in power in certain aircraft,  in IL-2 you can climb forever without any noticeable loss of power output from the engine - as far as I could tell anyways.

Another example is the post departure modelling(what happens after a wing or both wings stall).
In IL-2 it feels like an ON/OFF stall, sometimes with a spin, other times not, whereas in Aces High I experience more forces acting on the aircraft during and after the stall.

Other then that, the stick forces seem different, the aircraft seem heavier, they seem to produce more induced drag during pitching maneuvers, the Russian aircraft seem way too uber... especially the La-5, which gets to an accelerated stall much quicker in Aces High, and the recoil from the LW cannons and the P-39 37mm seems way too violent and throws your aim off badly.

Please share your opinions....

Reason I'm asking this is that a few friends of mine who play IL-2 and I want to introduce them to Aces High. They asked me what merits Aces High has thats better then IL-2, other then offcourse the difference between a multiplayer sim to a mmog sim.

Thanks,

Ask your friends to download alsoMitsus (http://www.ah.wakwak.com/~mitsu/battoutai/index.htm) sounds and  Snefens (http://home14.inet.tele.dk/snefens/views/views.htm) ready head positions for planes & vehicles.

I think the IL2 FM is too twitchy and the HA one might be too clean.

I haven't flown WWII fighters, but from what experience I have with Cessnas, there isn't as much twitchyness as in IL2. Also got a problem with hi alt performance and some stall behaviour. But need to ahve a better system before I can truly say more.
