Damn Mrsid.

I said “GAME” of the year. Game meaning fun and fast action.

Although I expected a rabid simulation junkie fanstudmuffin loyal minion laughing at himself in response, I was thinking they might offer a better choice or something.

Yowsaz.

Won't happen. UGA is to pumped up not to mention that within a 2 week period they lost 1 guy b/c he slept thru a  final, and the other one got in to some trouble at a local mall.  With a UGA win we will more than likely have the best recruiting class in the southeast.  That and a class act coach will mean very good things for the Dawgs in the next few years, I'd even venture to say a Nat'l Championship within the next 3 years.  Bama is in for a world of hurt, still on probation AND a new coach.  Ole Zook will probably not make it thru next season, Fulmer-well cant say much about the Pumpkin, but Tenn. might turn it around.

uhh the AI in that game sucks BAD.
It's funny to see how people get slaughtered because they don't see enemy standing behind their backs slashing 'em with the swords...

IMHO "Haegemonia:Legions of Iron" is much better and so is "Warcraft III".

Creamo, the idea and looks of BF1942 were great.. But the coding was not.

I haven't had the chance to test the game in full retail patched version, but the beta sucked HARD, especially in the most important aspect, net coding.

And does it really fix the net coding ?
Even in LAN it was terrible

Compared to AOM I find Warcraft III incredibly shallow but fun for the occasional head to head. Battlefield 1942 is stil la dog even after it was patched to v1.2. The net code is a quantum leap over the original release but still not a patch on any of the other FPS games out there. I enjoy America's Army too but for the overall fun factor I found UT 2003 with it's various game types a little more entertaining.

With the 1.4 patch. and the new MODS, it might win again for 2003.

It's THAT GOOD. Buy it, or patch it and try it again.

And don't expect to fly in it and have fun, the planes seem to be included just so the developers could claim they did it all, which they nearly did.

I don't like the online part of it as well as linking 2 or more computers together and going co-op against the AI. Actually, I urge you to try it in this format. It's a blast.

I'm telling you, it's damn near the best game I've ever played. The patches just iced it.

If you get bored or need a strat boost, there is alot it provides, like this. (http://thegamingchronicle.com/2002.09.06.htm)

If so, would you consider BF1942's ground war more fun and entertaining than WWIIOL?

Note:  This is not to start a flame fest pertaining to WWIIOL.  This is an honest question since I might buy BF 1942.

Still waiting for the price of BF1942 to drop.  Will eventually give that a try.

Seems the Game of the Year award for 2003 should be taken for what its worth.  Maybe I'm just getting old, but very little of what I saw this year was impressive.

The jump in eye candy is great, but I still find the gameplay and weapons in the orig. UT to be superior to the 2003 version.

Thought what the hell... reinstalled BF1942 last week....

1.  Hmm says can't find file on the CD....

Getting peed off, tried cleaning CD, rebooting, etc still no go...
Finally said fk it and copied CD's to my HDD, now we're away.
  (installed latest patch)

For the first game or two, the game works fine.

hmm CTDS's.....

no prob I just start again...

Please insert correct CD and press OK   WTF??

Now my cdrom is able to read NO CD's whatsoever... worked fine before using the BF1942 CD....  takes a re-boot to get the cdrom working again.

Oh yeah did I mention I lost my temper?

Dug up a no-cd patch but I can only play the original game, and not mods with it...  (did only try the pirates mod)

Game of the year??   not a friggen chance

Damn, those are a lot of buzzwords, CLEAR indication that a game that hasnt even been released will be the best game of the year!

Dude, if we are gonna nominate games that are still under wraps, have you heard about a little monster called HALF LIFE 2?

Also the other two mega hits they had really sucked all over the world so you're probably right this is going to be a pitiful game.

Ok, let me try to inject some logic on you.

Can you answer me how can a game be the game of the year if you cant go to the store and buy it?

How can you know a product is the most influential, standard setting, cleanest best programed bug free game of the year if you have only seen screenshots and promotional quotes?

Have you followed the gaming industry? do you remember Duke Nukem Forever? Daikatana? Team Fortress 2? Gunship!? Sabre Ace? WWIIOnline? Battlecruiser 3000? 'Black and White' alone had ten times more pre-release hype than your pick. They even said it was going to change gaming forever.

I hope Road to Rome will be an awesome game. I'm all for good games. But how subjective can you be to compare vaporware to games you can buy and test right now? games people have been enjoying for the better part of the year?

How much enjoyment had you had playing 'Rome - Total War' during 2003? was it bug free? how was the multiplayer? was the combat balanced?

But if you still disagree, then I'd like to also nominate Half Life 2, Deus Ex 2, Doom 3 and Homeworld 2.
All of them played with a Bitboys Oi video card.

BTW Drunky, the ground war in BF1942 is infinitely more fun than ww2ol.

At least it was when I first got the game and it worked fine.

I am hoping its just an accumulation of 18 months of junk in XP thats causing most of my probs...  (likely not though)

Blah blah blah blah blah blah........I don't care what your opinion is, why on earth do you care what mine is?

Why on earth do you spend so much time and effort over what to me was a meaningless 1 line throway - I have two other of their games - they're pretty amazing - I thought maybe some other people might like to hear about RTW if they haven't already.

acepilot....    fun and realistic don't often go hand in hand

Drunky

Actually I love XP.  In comparison to 98 its great!  However...  do NOT upgrade, be sure to do a clean install of XP, and be prepared to download a ton of updates once its installed.  I heard a figure of 37mb... though it may even be bigger...

There are some issues with sound in especially UBI games and SBLive! cards.  Often these can be minimized by reducing sound acceleration.  Games with this issue that come to mind off the top, Ghost recon and IL2 (FB and non-FB).  Having said that I am currently playin Ghost recon and work around the minor sound issue (once in a while a buzz comes over the spkrs, call up the map briefly and its gone)

BTW I am running an AMD XP1800+ (@1900 specs) a MSI Turbo 2 mobo (via 133), SBLive!, GF4 Ti4200 with 44.03's  and 512mb SDRam.

I think its time I prepared to do a reformat, I am just dreading the task, and need to find a whole day to go through it at least.  I have a ton of software and mods that will just be a lot of work to restore...

My vote is for BF1942 as well.  The P1.4 is mandatory.  It's not supposed to be uber realistic, its just a blast to play.  I had CTD probs until I did 2 things:

1-Disk defrag
2-Cleared the SYSTRAY of all uneeded programs

After doing that it runs fine.  I can't seem to get enough of it.  The eye candy and the game play are the 2 biggest factors for my vote.  Its a very simple player interface and is fun fun fun.  Just download the muliplayer demo and get a feel for it.

What's everyone's fave map?  I like Omaha Beach and that desert one that starts with a G, Gazala I think, Battle of the Bulge is great fun to.

AMD 2.1
Win2000 SP3
GF4 Ti4200 64mb

Well I had a Half-life CD and after a big patch and downloading Day of Defeat, I think it’s all what the retail version is, but free for a little effort downloading.

Was it the map or me? I didn’t see anything to do other than run around and shoot as a soldier. There were no manable ack guns, drivable tanks, jeeps, motorcycles, trucks w/ rockets, scud launchers, half tracks, M7 howizers LCVP’s, like in BF1942. And that’s not mentioning the strat and other things like manning the battleship guns.

You gotta be kidding ack-ack. DOD is ok, but I see know reason to play it if you can afford to buy BF1942.

Yes it is Torque, but so fast paced compared to the original, it takes some getting used to.

People need to know BF1942 has had a "Road to Rome" update sold in stores which is pretty terrific, as it should be. More great maps.

The MODS are just aditional free fun.

We played 4 man LAN with 2 taking each side in a co-op map this week. It's just twice as fun trying to win the map and killing guys next to you. It really is the best game I've played.

Gotta disagree. I get so frustrated playing that game. The new patch doesn't help either. Now we have cruise missles. Come on. 1/3 my deaths are spawn kills. The maps are way to small for that many jets flying around. There are to many weapons that kill in one shot. The game is total quake now. Seems like they wanted to show off, add a bunch of cool toys and threw playability out the window.

but, I do love the helicopter physics and gameplay. On that note I am looking forward to the Dice release of BF Vietnam.

I lost interest in BF1942 quite quickly.  It was a fun game for a while, but I think first person shooters just aren't my "thing".

I'd rather play Uncommon Valor, but I have a hard time classifying it as a "game".

Post by: Creamo on August 15, 2003, 02:32:47 PM
Um, Sunking could you point me to the readme file that says the 1.4 patch has jets and cruise missiles? The patch just updated the code, graphics, weapon models, sounds and whatnot for WWII.

And if you are getting killed 1 out of every 3 times by these mystery patch weapons, tell me why you miss the entire strat and terrific gameplay and keep spawing there like a dip****?

Nice try, tell me what your splash screen says for 1.4. You can't, you don't even play it.

Curval, FPS aren't my thing either, that's why this is the best developed game I've ever played.
Title: Game of the Year?
Post by: SunKing on August 15, 2003, 02:55:04 PM
Straight from the readme

and I quote....

"* New in DesertCombat .39

New Guided Cruise Missle

Made rockets have larger explosion radius against other planes. (AA-10, MagicII and Aim9)
AA rockets get straight flight path
AA rockets converge at 250m
AA rockets increased velocity

A-10 Thunderbolt II
A-10 Thunderbolt II Bomber
A-10 Thunderbolt II Cluster Bomber
F-16
AH-64 Attack Helicopter
UH-60 Blackhawk Transport Helicopter
AV8b Harrier
AC-130 Gunship

Mig29
SU-25 Ground Attack Plane
M124d Hind attack Helicopter "

And to think you'd realize I was replying in regards to DC not RTR.
Thanks for being rude. Sorry my opinion of the game doesn't agree with you. Enjoy spawn camping with the 12 year olds in DC.

PS... and of course I know to change spawn sites. It doesn't really matter, you know every 4 secs someone is launching a random missle to spawn kill.

Punt like the Vikings Sunday at Lambeau.

The Secret Weapons of WWII Mod for BF1942  is a riot. Buy it.

All the new maps are fun, not great, but diffrent, and the new weapons and motorcycles are just too fun.

Buy it, enjoy it, don't thank me for the heads up. Find the developers and ask for limo passes at the LA Expo. They got it right. I'm guessing they are rich.
