Lol Found the CD when we moved.
What a great game!
I have played it now for a few days, started a long campaign in Poland and just fought the battle of Kasserin pass, 19 decisive victories! My whole tank force is tigers.
To bad they stopped the line.
-
What OS are you using....Wonder if I could get mine working in XP?
-
For me.
I cant find Steel 2 so I have not tried but Steel 3 the brigade comand one will not run.
Fun stuff.
-
You guys have Steel panthers world at war right? Matrixgames spent more than two years making steel panthers one of the best tactical wargames there is after ssi (or whoever) abandoned the code.
If not, let me know, and Ill give you the adress, it is a free download.
-
I just found out about it...
But the download sit is not working! :(
-
I loved that game.
Got Close Combat Battle of the Bulge and it has the same flavor but in real time.
Real time makes it...tense.
If you loved Steel Panthers give Close Combat a shot.
-
Never tried SP..Panzer General 2 is great too..Still play a campaign once in a while.
-
Hortuland where is that link your talking about?
e-mail is psyc11@aol.com

It can also be found at these mirrors:

I have this and love it. I played the Original Tabletop hex game with my brother when I was younger. Also, played Squad Leader.

Revvin
Only the swedish link works for me lol
hmm but it is downloading!
-
oh man..if you havent tried spwaw, you are going to LOVE this...
I'm in the middle of the "Lost victories" mega campaign...over 200 battles where you take your troops from June 22 1941 to the Soviet winter offensive in 42...You have to buy that one though, but it is well well worth it.
Or try the Stalingrad campaign with something like 40 battles.
If you want a game, let me know. But you should take a couple of days to get to know the game first, stuff like the command and control system can be hard to get into.
Spwaw is built on the SP3 engine, but it is with the SP scale (one vehicle, one squad, one gun). I've been playing spwaw for over two years, and Im still playing it.
-
I used to have this on my HDD, downloaded it again tonight from the UK link..thank god for broaband had it downloaded in 1 1/2 hours :)
-
Revvin, have you downloaded the new stalingrad campaign?
-
No just the basic download, just came back to this thread to get the link to the downloads page to get the other docs and patch etc.
-
I got the new one downloaded... so far so good..
much more detail.
-
Yeah, you cant really compare spwaw to sp1, its a completely different game.
-
I just got panzer 4 F2s lol now I am raping the brits at every turn.
hmmm I got rid of the captured T34s I was using too.
-
hehe, just wait until you get Tigers. Playing the long campaign then I gather?
-
I think my first was early late 41 or early 42. Had the Panzer3 with the short 50.
I cant wait for tigers!
lol I am going to start a US one soon.
Pretty mush as soon as you get the Tiger things go downhill for the germans right? By 43 they really where losing the war.
-
Speaking of Matrix games, have you guys not noticed that other game by them that is gaining popularity in leaps and bounds?
"Uncommon Valor: Campaign for the South Pacific" is so popular, they keep running out of stock!
It is a fabulous game of operational level combat of the Guadalcanal/New Guinea campaign from May 1942-Jan 1944. You guys should check it out, and take a look at the UBB, found here: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=11
If you are even remotely interested in the War in the Pacific theater, you need this game. It is the perfect game for PBEM, too. I am involved in 4 games at the moment, and am having a ball.
BTW, that is where I learned about SPWaW, and I'm going to download that and give that a try this weekend.
Ah, it's good to know that wargaming is alive and well. :)
-
I have been trying to get my hands at UV, but they have been sold out for quite some time now. At the same time I dont have the heart to download it from kazaa or something...I mean I've spent almost 2 years as a betatester for SPWAW, it would feel like stealing.
Anyway, you should keep your eyes open for the next title they are releasing, Combat Leader. Turn based with a completely self made engine, its the sequel to spwaw one might say, but there has been an enormous amount of work put down in "softer" issues like morale, command and control, initiative. And at the same time one of the two main guys behind matrix is a real realism freak when it comes to armor and penetration, I swear that guy could write a paper on ww2 ballistics and win the nobel prize or something hehe, anyway, the entire damage-armor/penetration/fire effects on soft targets-model for CL is UN-believable.
CL is about to hit beta, and they are aiming at release Q2-Q3 2003.
-
WoW that sounds awsome!! how could you get in on the beta?
will it run on older systems?
-
You should start hanging out in the forum I suppose. Do a little back-reading and you'll get a good idea of the game concept.

Is there a manual or something somewhere?
Downloading from Sweden at 120kb/s :)
Can't get to patch though - any alternative sites for that?
-
The manual is a .pdf included in the download.
7.1 is the final version. No bugs left, no more features possible to add (Matrixgames deal with SSI (or whoever it was that owned the code) prohibited certain aspects to be changed) Anyway, trust me, they've come a long way since v2.1 (I think it was 2.1) when I discovered it :)
-
Alright thanks Hortlund. I've never played it so might be fun.
Annoying thing about Internet Explorer: you dl the file into a temporary one, then it compies that towhatver dl position you've chosen - effectively ensuring that you need twice as much drive space for the dl. It's very annoying on big files such as this.
-
7.1 might be the last version, but on the downloads page it says there's a patch for 7.1, but it's a bad link.
Anyone know where I can get that patch?
-
That patch is if you have another version other then 7.1 (the patch is for versions 6.1 or higher and brings you up to 7.1).
If you Dl'd the complete 7.1 thats all you should need AFAIK.
-
Ok, thanks Wotan.
-
anyone know if you can make the smoke stay off.. I mean I want it there I just want to not see it so I can see the damn units?
You can turn it off, but it comes back as soon as some damn infantry unit pops some.
oh do they have modern exspansions?
-
I think you have to keep turning it off manually, u button. But your right if ai pops smoke you have to hit it again.
-
I still play SP. Nothing like taking the Poles then whipping my friend's butt when he comes in with his German forces :)
Polish Infantry = good
-
Ordered the Operation watch tower mega campaign.
I wish I could have downloaded it!
How come they discontinued the other mega campaigns? WIll there be more?
-
They are kinda divided over the Mega Campaigns. On the one hand, everyone buys them, on the other hand, they take enormous amount of work to do. If you look at the website you will see how many projects Matrix is currently involved in.
At the same time, they are focused at their two babies Uncommon valor/war in the pacific and Combat leader/Close assault.
About a year ago, the desicion was made to focus on the new games. So, first Uncommon Valor was released, that team is working on War in the pacific now (Uncommon valor covering the entire pac theater). Meanwhile the rest are working with Combat leader that is about to hit alpha soon.
I playtested all of the Mega campaigns, and I think you will enjoy Operation Watchtower muahahaha (laughs knowingly)
If you get the opportunity, you should really buy the lost victories mega campaign too, that is the one that puts "mega" into "mega campaigns" I dont remember exactly, but I think the player gets to follow his force over 170 battles in that one.
Anyway, back to the mega campaigns, I think there is a discussion right now about letting some players create the next mega campaign, since the regular matrix guys are tied up in the other projects, but I'm not sure how far those plans have come.
(latest rumor about the "next" Mega campaign is that it will probably put the player in charge of a Tiger company in 43-44.)
-
Hmmm thats cool.
Do they have any combat leader screen shots? It sounds like it is going to rock!
-
sorry for the bumo.,, friend cant find thread
-
Curse you all for recommending Steel Panthers!!! All I needed was another gaming addiction!
-
I played the original Steel Panthers a long long time ago. I sucked at it, as I suck at all wargames, but I still enjoyed the heck out of it.
Downloading now, thanks for the heads up!
