These were intense fights. in short, rules were 4v4, guns cold at merge, merge at 15k, then anything goes but ack hugging and reupping. Friendly icons only.
Planes were 2* 109G6 vs LA-5 and 1* 190D9 vs LA-7.
First frame; spotted the enemy at the correct altitude, in two rottes, one left and one right. We'd laid some plans with Nath coming up with a tactic that proved to be quite effective. One rotte was to aggressively engage the enemy while the other one blew through, grabbed to 20-21k and reversed.
In theory, we'd be able to hold off the two chasing LA-5's and hammerhead down on um. In practise, however, when I saw those dots get bigger and bigger, my mind started screaming incoherents words about me dying soon if I didn't take action. So, I did (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif).
Kirin and I decided to try to sandwich them between us. i can tell you that with the enemy rushing past, no complete idea of their distance, things got intense, and RW channel was alive with orders, direction, screams and "shoot 'um, SHOOT 'UM". With nath working wonders, soon there were only two LA-5's left. Outnumbered 2:1 and with a clear sight of them, the outcome was predictable. I had some battle damage and had no 30mm gun, so resorted to 13mm's. one LA-5 had pulled hard up into a friendly and presented a nice target. The last LA-5, expertly flown by Leonid, decided that my puny 13mm's didn't do the job correctly and stalled in scissors, impacting on the ground and spreading communist blood over the terrain.
It should be said that we had to redo the second frame; I discoed but the fight went on 3v4. Showing very high class and extremly nice sportmanship, the 5th agreed to redo the frame. We'd lost the 3v4 engagement 3:2 or something like that.
Second frame was more even, with one rotte pulling out and reversing more quickly, while the other engaged aggressively again. This time at the end it was me and kirin vs some unkown LA-5 neither of us could see.
he had no problems seeing me and caught me as I was desperately trying to look behind me. Fortunately enough, kirin killed the enemy just after I had been downed.
4:3 to 9./JG 54
Last engagement; d9 vs La-7. With wep on, one rotte commenced an immelman followed by a climb and managed to get above the LA-7s, The other continued as normal, reversing into the enemy at 20k. Now, the Dora has spray ammo. I made use of this and pressed and held the trigger for about 5 seconds, downing one. Another LA-7 rtb'ed with engine damage, and the last two put up a valiant fight they had little chance of winning: 2v1 versus higher 190D9s. Frame ended 4:0.
For fun, a 6v 4 favouring the Commies was done. There, they spanked us so bad I will be unable to sit for a week. Wisk dispatched three of us; lost a wingtip colliding with him (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).
The 5th GIAP is a class squad with great pilots and sportsmanship. I can only say that 9./JG 54 "Grünherz" will do its best to match those qualities. These guys are just fantastic in their whole approach to the duel, and damned fine pilots too.
Fights like these seem to be won at the start;the first side who manages to down an enemy has numerical superiority, and if another enemy is downed, the outcome is heavily tilted towards the more numerous squad. The 4:3 result of the second frame is indicative of just how close *all* of the frames where.
<S!> to the 5th GIAP; it was a pleasure and a priviledge flying against you!

I wouldnt brag too loudly about beating a La-anything at 15k. This fight was won by whoever chose the alt.

Just for sake of argument, try again at 5K (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) (no slight intended) would be interesting.

Yes and we're going to be so short in Acm and be willing to give the advantage to them, LOL. Besides the fight started at 15k my friends but it went down all the way to the deck not untill we tried the 6 vs 4 did they win so shut it already.

Well, the altitude was agreed upon by both parts long before the duel took place and is a nice compromise; the fight will get low (and all fights ended on the deck) and the G6 doesn't really have that great performance at altitude.
It was a nice, clean fought duel with all parts honouring the rules.
We could have another go at say 10k, but 15k seems like a good alt for planes to meet.
We'd picked same altitude vs 38's. Then there'd be comments about how low it was (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).
Am just happy I got a chance to fly vs these guys.
Incidentally, before the duel me and Kirin did some h2h to compare performance. We found that up til 20k, the LA-5 will outloop and outturn the G6 quite easily. The G6 isn't some super plane and has disadvantages of its own. I do not personally feel the altitude was unfair, but if the 5th GIAP thinks so, we could redo it all.

Virage, the fight was not won by whoever chose the alt. That was agreed upon between Leonid and Nath.
We had two advantages, not related to the planes or altitude.
One, we were all on rw, we've all been on rw for some time. Some members of the 5th get bad quality on rw, making it less useful
Two, when we're more than 1 in MA, we usually wing up. I've flown a lot with the three others and that's a factor. The 5th GIAP has more member and it might lead to familiarization with everyone, but close knowledge with only a few.
So these are two factors that are unrelated to plane type, altitude, SA, ACM skills and they *do* make a difference.

<S> to the 5. GIAP
It was the most intense fighting I had for a while. Flying without friendly icons is just a whole new experience. I wish HT would set this icon setting as default in a less quakish arena!
As said 15k was agreed upon by both sides. I think that's about the threshold - go higher and the edge falls to G6, go lower and enter the La5s realm. All in all those 2 planes match very closely. Still I'd say the La5 has the edge. From what we (Santa & I)tested H2H the La5 wins against G6 in 1vs1 - and keep in mind that we are not very familiar in that plane!!! (edit: who is this virage anyway??)
I agree with Santa that it wasn't the plane or the alt that decided the match but team cohesion. As said, communication is a key factor in many vs many fights - even moreso with enemy icons off. On both sides were top-of-the-notch jocks. Santa is right, 9./JG54 is a very small, tight squad. You will rarely meet one of us alone in MA. Wingmen quality has reached a unsurpassed quality in last weeks. Ok, we still have to work on our own egos - but that's just the Jagdflieger spirit.

The Assassins danced a little late Saturday night / Sunday morning (till 4am EST!) with the 5th.
Was a great time - mostly same planeset, then we switched it around some.
Friendly icons only is a lot more immersive.

Actually, though we lost, it wasn't because the Lavochkins couldn't put out. I was able to stay on top most of the time until superior numbers forced me down. In fact, on initial merge both the La5FN & La7 were able to get equal or better alt on reversal, than the 109G-6 and 190D-9, respectively, and all while at 15k.
No, the reason we lost was because, overall, 9./JG54 were the better pilots, the better team. Thanks for the duel (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
