I just watched Pearl Harbor again so I could see that fantastic headon in the BOB scenario. But I stopped the DVD at the point that the Spits were being armed and went to get a beer. When I came back I stopped and noticed that all of the Spitfires were the same plane! Yeah, they were very clever in positioning the shots so you couldn't tell at first glance, but you can tell.
Damn I feel cheated!
-
Christ, you were watching Pearl Harbor...what did you expect?! They should have flushed that turd instead of smearing it on the big screen.

Hell, watch the opening scenes.
Mitchel field is not spelled MITCHELL FIELD.
And there are NO MOUNTAINS ON LONG ISLAND!!!!!!
Geez, Do some research before you call Ben AFLAC!

...and Alec Baldwin playing a "man's man" like Jimmy Doolittle really got me... I couldn't decide if Baldwin wanted to hug Afflek or send him into battle...
-
I think there was a slight vibration and a high pitched whirring sound from Jimmy's gravesite when they announced Baldwin was playing him in a movie.

Am I the only one who saw this thread title and poster ID, and thought "Now THERE's a candidate for 'Ironic Post of the Year'"? :)

I'm thinking about getting Pearl Harbor to add to my B-movie library -- if only I could avoid giving the produces and studio any more revenues. Perhaps I'll try to find it used.
The only unfortunate part about Pearl Harbor as a B-movie is that the average B-movie aficionado will miss many of the military absurdities that stand out to a fan of military history. The entire BoB diversion, for example, from the involvement of official US military personnel to the 30mm .303s. Or the, "drag him to the tower so we can shoot him with shotguns" scene from the attack, or the rest of attack itself (lets move the battleships apart on Battleship Row so we can have a "canyon run" scene like in Star Wars Episode 1). Or the entire Doolittle Raid escapade. Or the way the director decided to fuse bombs to heighten suspense - DON'T LET THE WHIRLEY THING STOP, IT”S GOING TO BLOW!!!!
The average b-movie watcher has plenty to bust on though, as Rottentomatoes.com attests. The cinematography reeks of a poorly executed Ralph Lauren Chaps commercial. There is the comical and entirely formula-driven love story (BTW, how did Rafe know almost immediately that Danny slept with his Hoochie after his return from the dead?).
Pearl Harbor is the type of film Ed Wood would have made, had he only managed to scrounge the budget. In fact, I believe it could only be improved with TOR playing Danny and Bela Lugosi playing Rafe.
Below: Danny (Tor "Super Swedish Angel" Johnson) and Evelyn (Vampira) lament over Rafe's fall in the Battle of Britain.

this is kinda like MST3K

I enjoyed it, I own the dvd, what can I say? Any chance to see P40s, he-111s, etc. is NEAT!
Yah there were problems, the first hour (BOB notwithstanding) was boring, etc., etc. It's an easy target, who cares?

Yes, he threatened (along with other activist actors/actresses) to move to Canada if Bush beat Gore in the Presidential election.
Note to Mr. Baldwin: I'm still waiting.
[Edit: Did you know that Canada already has more celebrities per capita then anywhere else?]

Thank you Siskel...er...Charon for that scathing review. :)

I'm not a big fan of Alec Baldwin and I don't generally agree with him but this statement is a load of crap.
There is nothing more American than dissent, IMHO.
Anti-american... that's the line we always get from the right wing goose stepping jack boots who believe that non-comformity is a sin.
Oh... now to get back on topic... if you really want to be impressed with AI and CG, watch LOTR (Fellowship and/or Towers). Notice that the battlefield scenes. Each fighter is individually modeled and behaves independently. Really cool stuff.
-
the whole Dollittle Raid part was totally out of place.
The only reason to buy Pearl Harbor is to watch it and look for inconsistencies and laugh at it.

Sandman-
I only meant you couldn't find someone more not-Doolittle than Alec Baldwin.

The one good thing I saw come out of the movie Pearl Harbar was this......
I have a younger friend and she saw the movie. She liked it, but found out something new about WW2.
Turns out during her Hish School Education, They had a section of study on WW2. During this class, they only had a brief overview claiming Pearl Harbor only as an opening Battle, No details.
At the End of Class, They had to write papers on why it was wrong to drop the nuculear Bombs on Japan.
Her Reaction was this....
"Im Glad we Nuked them Sons of B*tchs" She had No Idea that the Japanese did a surprize attack or that so many guys died on ships or were burned. A diffinent Lack in the Education System IMHO.
So, She got a little Education by watching the movie as she swooned to Ben Afleck. I think it makes it a worth while watch.
{edit}
Oh yes! I agree very Ironic when seeing the title and poster!

Alec Baldwin said he would leave the United States if George Bush won the election. All we ask is that the little weasel keep his word and move his sorry bellybutton somewhere else to dessent.

Next thing you know, he's in France.:( We need stricter imigration laws in France!)

Sandman,
I hear what you're saying and I agree, but (there had to be a but, no? :D)...He threatened to cease being a U.S. Citizen if the rest of the citizens didn't vote like he wanted. I'd say giving up your citizenship is pretty anti-American, wouldn't you? :)
SOB
-
You're on to something... Unfortunately, Mr. Baldwin did not forfeit his citizenship. He just threatened to.
Of course, in his fantasy world, he probably thinks that the U.S. voted for Bush simply to get rid of Baldwin.
:)
-
Shit, why do you think I voted for Bush?! :D

I think Alec Baldwin was a perfect choice for the movie, in fact, perfect for that particular role. Pearl Harbor is the Mother of all B-Movies. Casting genius like that makes a totally unwatchable movie entertaining on an entirely different level. The difference between just plain bad and too funny bad. If only they had included Hugh Grant (trying to be serious and expand his range) in a fat suit, playing Churchill as he presented Rafe with the VC for saving the Empire.

What kills me is the perfectly non-disfigured GP bomb(s) which pass through the decks of ships and bounce along concrete at 300+ MPH come to rest without even the paint chipped. Then, for drama, the vane of the tail fuze spins and then stops abruptly (leading one to believe that an internal force was spinning it, the fuze uses wind speed to spin its vane and subsequently arming the fuze) and then a second later the bomb goes into a feiry last.
what do you expect from hollywood?
Munitions guys notice these things, please excuse me :D

A little bit, but as Yippee said, the flying sequences were a nice antidote to PH. The sound, for example, is pretty good (for example, when the 109s are firing you can hear the rattle of the mgs and the jackhammer thump of the 20mm, a detail that's often overlooked--listen to the Zekes firing in PH, e.g.). The film is also pretty realistic about the amount of damage you could inflict with a bunch of 303s. It takes two planes, for example, to damage a bomber enough so that the crew decides to bail. Things get a little sloppy in the middle part of the film (with Spit 1s escorting late model B25s), but overall the aerial sequences are refreshingly free of the theatrics of PH (although they CGI people got a little carried away with the idea of ejected shell-casings).
And my favorite bit was where the one pilot rescues the other by fitting the two of them into the cockpit. It's actually almost like a parody of that infamous, puke-inducing, "sunset flight" sequence in PH.
And it's better than PH simply for the fact that it's about a group (Czech RAF pilots) that don't get talked about a lot in the mainstream; and the film isn't trying to whip the public into a jerk-off patriotic frenzy, but just to show the tragedy of what happened to these brave men when they returned home to a place that freedom had deserted. It died at the box office in the US simply because it's a sub-titled film and required people to actually read. :D
-
I own the PH DVD also. I have it right beside my Rock and Roll Wrestling Women vs the Aztec Mummy.

You guys all missed the fact the p40 was way over modeled in the film. Allso the props on the vals where 17% larger than in real life. The attack aircraft all had 500lb U.S. ord instead of the proper 250kg bombs they actually carried. I wont even mention the torps not even close to correct.
Damn pay attention to the details if your gonna whine get the facts straight first!!!!!!!!

I feel cheated too... My AMRAAM kills in Desert Storm didn't count because I was really just riding my bike pointing my finger and going BANG BANG!

Hey Voss...to quote Lasz, "You suck"
Have a nice day
-
I don't feel cheated. Skip the crappy movie and check out the additional stuff on the end of the 2nd dvd. I think it was originally aired on the history channel, but it has good footage of Pearl after the attack. It also is pretty descriptive on how the attack took place.
-
Drunky, I can practice up and get over the sucking. What you, eagl and these other guys have, doesn't wash off and makes you act stupid as hell. Well, act what you are.
