Here in Texas...it's a Coke. We don't order "pops" or "sodas" in restaurants. We order a Coke. Even DP and Pepsi are Coke.

Only two things on Texas drink menus, Coke and beer...

Vanilla Coke is the way to go.  Get it in the cans so it stays fresh longer than in the 2 litre bottle, unless you plan on consuming the whole bottle in one sitting - in which case you better have some friends over to help polish off the bottle or you'll suffer the dreaded "Coke Headache".  Then again, the vanilla takes some of the edge off the acidic taste of the regular Coke so maybe you'd survive chugging the full bottle.

If you want to experiment, drop in some vanilla ice cream for kicks.   Its a party in the making.

And best of all, Chaz Palminteri is rewarding you for your curiosity.

I've been to a number of different regions in the US.  I've lived in the northeast, south and midwest.  All I have to say is you want to order a soft drink, call it by name.  Don't ask for a soda from me, or I'll pour you a soda water.  You ask me for a coke, you get one.  You won't get a Pepsi, a Dr. Pepper, or a Tab.  You'll get a coke.  A pop?  Wrong.  Ask for a pop, and I'm likely to make a popping sound at you...or "pop" you in your eye.

How difficult is it to say, "I'd like a Sprite," when asked what you'd like to drink.

I think the original "cokes" before 1914 contained opium, or laudenum (the soda counter ones.)  The drinks were made up at a pharmacy/drug store, and were sold as a tonic.  Folks would come in and ask for a "dope" instead of a coke.  Dunno if it was by prescription, or available to everyone.

Soda water by itself is pretty foul stuff to drink, even with whiskey in it.:)   However, I've heard the term "soda water" applied to 7-Up, which imho, is a darn good drink.  "Soda water" is a coloquial, and old school term, but accurate it its description of soda...with sugar, lemon and lime added.:D

Mountain Dew is "heavy soda water", and in its own sub-class.  (Heavily fortified with caffein)

Now, it seems to me there are two separate and distinct soft drink classifications, aside from Root Beer, which constitutes a third class.  But to simplify matters, we could leave that to later discussion.  The two main classes are:

1.  Cokes, f.g. Royal Crown Cola, Double Cola, Coca Cola,
     PepsiCola, Dr. Pepper

2.  Soda waters, f.g. Sprite, 7-Up, Mountain Dew...and all
derivatives thereof, including but not limited to, Cherry 7-Up,
     Mountain Dew Code Red, etc...

I submit before you, that Grape sodas (NuGrape, Grapico, Grape Crush) and Orange sodas (Orange Crush, MinuteMaid Orange Soda) are, in fact, sodas  by natural extension of adding flavor to soda water, i.e. adding flavor to 7-Up or Sprite.

Just wanted to clear up a few things for you guys.  Now get back to work.:D

The mention of Mountain Dew reminds me of the Simpsons episode when Homer had his car "booted" in Capital City.  He bought some horrible things to eat from a street vendor and then needed something to wash it down.

The guy only had "Crab Juice" and "Mountain Dew"

At the mention of the later Homer went "Ewwwwww..okay give me a "Crab Juice".:D

LOL, that is one of my favorite Simpsons scenes.  On a related note...anyone know where I can get my hands on some crab juice (in a retail package, of course).

Perk Coca Cola !

stolen from elsewhere on the 'net ...

"The original formula included extracts of the African kola nut and coca leaves, both strong stimulants. "Coca-Cola" was one of thousands of exotic patent medicines sold in the 1800’s that actually contained traces of cocaine."

The original recipe calls for 3/4 of an ounce of liquid coca extract per 2 gallons of water for syrup.... coca extract being what you make Cocaine out of .. the street math is : 20 grams or (6)8 balls per 2 gallons of syrup , just add soda water . your mileage may vary . but still a substantial 'trace'

Ok , maybe let Coca Cola perk you .
