Title: poll: Are you a computer geek?
Post by: udet on January 02, 2003, 03:07:16 PM
Do you play games other than flight sims(Especially RPGs)? Do you collect old hardware? Do you have a server in your house? Have ever built a computer at home? Have you grown up with a C64/Amiga and look back with nostalgia at the 8bit days? Do you own a Pocket Computer from the 80s? Do you even know what I'm talking about?

[list=1]I'm a computer geek even here at work... with perhaps the highest concentration of geeks in the world.  At least I'm not a chemistry geek... who are by far and away the geekiest people on the face of the earth.

Built many computers in my time...have enough parts lying around the office to put together at least a couple more...first computer was a C64...got an apple clone by Franklin after that.  Been playing games on computers since my fist C64.  Favorite game of all time was Zork.  Now, I am a software developer.

Yep, I qualify.

I still have a working C64, 128 AND a Amiga 500 with an optional 40meg HD and a whopping 4 megs of extra ram.

I still set-up games like Stunt Car Racer, Arkanoid, Chuck Rock, Lemmings, and my favorite, Speedball among others for partys at my house.

F/A18 for the Amiga was my first Flight sim game.

I don't know enough about computers to be called a computer nerd, hell, I don't even have the pear shaped body that goes with that name  ;)

yes to most,

I still have a working Commodore Vic-20 (the white one before that fancy powerful C64) I think it had 1.5k of memory but I got an upgrade cartridge to boost it upto a mighty 32k of memory.

I was a skinny glasses wearing "computer geek" for years then took up surfing and got contacts and was cool, but now the computer geeks have stolen the term "surfing" and turned it into a stupid computer geek name

So now if I say I like to surf I have to explain myself so they dont think I'm a computer geek.  So confusing, even my damn cable modems called a surfboard

Oh well, theres no escape may as well except it, at least I'm a tanned geek :)

And that is only a small part of my proud geek persona

Do you play games other than flight sims(Especially RPGs)?
Yes, but no RPGs

Do you collect old hardware?
Boxs of junk, motherboards, old cases, hard drives etc

Do you have a server in your house?
Not yet, but I do have 3 pc's networked

Have ever built a computer at home?
5 of them since 92

Have you grown up with a C64/Amiga and look back with nostalgia at the 8bit days?
I had an Atari 1800?  Console job that plugged into the TV and ran Basic with a cartridge, $200 at JC Penny's in 1984.  Spent 40 minutes typing in the basic code to draw a picture of the flag in 2 secs on the TV, never seen so many GOTOs in my life since.
Two years later got married and graduated to 286's and Apple IIc.

Do you own a Pocket Computer from the 80s?
No
Do you even know what I'm talking about?
Yes

I have always been proud of my geekness, never denied it, because I knew since I was a kid that they are the ones who end with the money :)

There is a difference between being a nerd and a geek. In this day, nerds are ruthlessly picked on in school, while geeks are begining to become even cooler than jocks in the popularity food chain.
Last time I walked by a high school the latest targets seem to be Nerds and Goths.

Not so during my school years, up to about 8th grade I was one of the targets, then I became good with martial arts, my confidence sky rocketed, I began going out with girls (not so good looking ones at first), doing and effort to look good, and I became really good at playing mind games with the stereotypical bullies who later ended up reformed and now own PC's and video games are suddenly the cool thing.

you'd be forced to defend yourself and blah blah blah..

but I think you're prolly right.  geeks have the money!!!
*edit*
and the 'bullies' prolly are old and fat now

Just cobbled togther an xp 1600 with 512 pc2100, a 6 gig 33mhzDMA and a geforce 2 Ti. I put it next to my p3 -700 that plays only one game. Two other rigs are linked for Cable. We eat our meals on the desks the comps sit on. ...Does that count?

No, not a geek.

I dinnae stand salivating over my brothers Vic20.

Nor did I find immense pleasure by making sinus scrolling text using Assembler on the Amiga 500.

I didn't make games for my pocket calculator (TI-82) later in life either.

I never watch sci fi programs, and couldn't dream about reading my way through a 10 book fantasy series in less than a week.

I don't type three times faster than those around me either. Nor have I ever spent $800 on IRC using a 33.6 modem at the most expensive time to use the phone.

I never participate in online technical discussions or anything the like. And I hate computer games.

Me, I'm a real blue collar man who only likes boobs and cars. Yeah, that's it.

1. Do you play games other than flight sims(Especially RPGs)?
2. Do you collect old hardware?
3. Do you have a server in your house?
4. Have ever built a computer at home?
5. Have you grown up with a C64/Amiga and look back with nostalgia at the 8bit days?
6. Do you own a Pocket Computer from the 80s?
7. Do you even know what I'm talking about?

1. No.

2. A few cubic meters of old staff. I still can build an XT on my knee in a matter of minutes. I never waste any old working hardware. Working in Academy of Science I often have our good old Soviet scientists coming and begging for a replacement for their 386 that came with some kind of HP gadget that can't work with modern PCs. People call me "Computer necrophil" :)

3. No server in my apartment. I am against having a 'puter at home, and have one only to watch DivX movies on a 29" TV.

4. At home - no more then 5-10 PCs back in the times when I was unemployed and HAD to do it at home.

5. The first computer I played on was my friend's Spectrum-48. The first computer I worked on was a DVK-1, IIRC it was a Soviet PDP-9 clone. I still have a diploma of a ES-EVM (Soviet IBM-360 clone) operator. Perforated cards were cool.

6. MK-54 at my Father's house. Programmed directly in machine codes. Played different "games" on it, like "Moon landing", and the whole "Moon-Earth" space travel from "Tekhnika-molodezhi" ("Technics for the youth") magazine back in 1985-87. Probably still have most of the programms in a 1024 command EPROM cartridge for it. The "pocket PC" you posted here was called MK-85 here, and it was exteremely expensive, maybe 350 rubles, and almost impossible to get. In my college years one of the guys in my group had one, and we calculated semester works for all the group on it.

7. Oh yes. Unfortunately.

I don't mind those great guys that called us geeks back in highschool.  you remember them the guys who couldn't be bothered to think things through.

'cause now we get to call them 'homeless'.   most of the name calling thugs reign of coolness ended at about age 19.

Very good English Boroda. I've seen some MK-54s for sale on Ebay. They look really mean :)
