Ok, I've used winmx for years, but it seems to be really slow and ineffective now. I've heard of kazaa, but not used it much. Is that my best bet for MP3 dloads? Others you all would recommend?

Nim get kasaa lite, it's the same thing as Kasaa but with out the spyware.
and ya Kasaa is great. you can find pretty much anything you want when there's on average 3000000+ users on :)

Check if your ISP has a news server and then subscribe to the mp3 group(s). If your ISP doesn't have a newserver, get an account with Giganews.com. They are excellent. Giganews ain't free, but they are cheap, have awesome speed, and long binary retention (about 2 weeks for binary groups).

Check out your local library, I can take out as many as 30 CD's for up to 3 weeks from my local branch. I either make straight back ups of the CD's or rip them from .wav into mp3's which is great for fitting multi CD boxed sets onto 1 CD. They usually have the original artwork still in the jewel cases that you can photocopy or scan and print, which is a plus if you have handwriting like mine.

Bearshare.com. It's free, and I have yet to NOT find a song or album I wanted. The only catch is that not everybody has the best upload/download speeds, so it's a matter of searching till ya find the right one.

go to http://www.downloads.com and search for "Direct Connect". Best file sharing program there is, problem is that you usually have to share quite much to get let into the "rooms".
Otherwise kazaa light is good, make a search on google for Kazaa light. DO NOT USE NORMAL KAZAA!
