Title: New Vox options
Post by: flakbait on January 05, 2003, 01:29:40 AM
Just a couple ideas that might help improve things with Vox...

1) A volume normalize control that would level out all Vox transmissions received. Something like the doohickey Magnavox came out with to stop commercials on TV from blowing your ear drums out. Instead of needing to fiddle with sound options, 20-Db boost, and so on, this would simply level all Vox volume off to a uniform level. Quiet people on Vox would be amplified to meet the "norm", while screamers would be turned down. This could be an "on or off" type control, or a slider that would set how much damping/amplifying is applied.

2) A Vox status page, kinda like the net status we currently have. This would display how much bandwidth you have to play with, how much Vox is using, and what's left over. If your Vox is getting dropped, you could check this display to find out if you've got enough bandwidth to use Vox.

Yeah, good ideas!  It can be frustrating to listen to a quiet person and then the next one is really loud! :)

On /Off controls are a real need IMO.

Imagine the bandwidth saved if you could turn off the room channel in congested areas?

Another plus would be the ability to prioritize channels.
(ie: if tuned channel has proiority, then Room channel "bursts" couldn't interrupt important comms via crosstalk, and vice-versa)

my 2 cents
