no doubt, i posted that same pic in a different thread w/in the last week...damned ugly bird, but i kind like the wing...long chord, short span...probably a bit more sturdy (except the whole plane looks like its held together by shoelaces)
-
AAAAHHHH my eyes, It burns, take it away.
-
Wow...does this thing actually fly or just "wave walk"...whole new meaning to the concept of a "Head On"...looks like some serious hurt in those missle tubes.
-
Humble that's a "Caspian Sea Monster".
It's referred to as an "Ekranoplan" by the Russians.
The one in your picture looks like the Lun.
Specs:
Weight - 400 tonnes
Propulsion - 8*NK-87 Kuznetsov four on each side of the fuselage aft of cockpit
Crew/Passengers - 400
Speed - 450-550 km/h
Ceilings - Cruise 1-4m (Yes 1-4 metres or 3-12ft :)), Search & Rescue mode 300-400m, Max 3000m (10,000ft or so)
Range - 3000km
They were designed to be used for search & rescue, transport and coastal defence and flew mostly in Ground effect (i.e 1-4 metres above the water). Imagine the speed rush!!!!
The fall of the USSR robbed the project of money for future development, but I believe there is a company manufacturing very small ekranoplanes in North America somewhere.

those wing-in-ground-effect (WIG) planes were meant for costal anti shipping defense. the one you posted, the Lun, weighs 400 tons - about the same as a fully loaded 747-400 - and flys@about 300 MPH, but ceiling is about 5 meters. the was a bigger one - 540 tons - named "The Caspian Sea Monster" mpeg (http://freespace.virgin.net/home.taylor/videos/km4.mpg)
not sure, but maybe it was the heaviest thing ever to fly?
