Good day fellow mortals!!!!
this is just an idea for more realizm....
In a real dogfight..if you get hit in the cockpit, shouldn`t the window be cracked or smashed...in WWII i really don`t think they used bullet proof glass in their cockpits!!!
that would be really cool if the glass would shatter or crack, it would make it more challenging when you`re injured and trying to look through the damaged glass to either land or keep fighting, the view would be somewhat resticted...
just an idea for a new patch...
------------------------------------------------------------------
first you must fly with respect, in order to soar with the aces!!
-
yea maby but what about if wen your hit on the wing does a spsfic bit have to fall off cant you just set the wing on fire etc just another idear
-
hey psyko....you a Iron Maiden fan or what...
i like your signature!!!
and wings don`t just burn a flame ...chances are if you get hit by either cannons or mg`s ...the wings do actually fall off...
you should read up on your plane history!!!

Your spelling is terrible. Later in life, that will really bug you. It's a discipline thing and not hard to fix.
You are now cleared to "hunt me down".

I thought they did use bullet proof glass... unless I am mistaken.
However, bullet proof glass does not mean that it does not shatter nor crack. In fact, depending on the type of glass used they just stop the bullets from going through completely. So there is a hole with the bullet stuck in it... at least that is the explanation I got when I visited a US Embassy.

I'm quite sure most canopies were bulletproof plexiglass, but as Dutchmn said, "bulletproof" does not really mean bulletproof, more like bullet resistent. Impacts at shallow angles will tend to bounce off, but at steeper angles a bullet will simply embed in the glass, which is made not to shatter. Given the thickness of canopy glass, at very steep angled impacts, near 90 degrees, a bullet or shell would most likely pass through. It takes a very thick pane of bulletproof glass to completely prevent penetration at all angles.
The bulletproof glass used in CIA armored SUV's, for example, is several inches thick, and it is simply designed to be immune to all assault rifle fire. No guarantees for heavy machinegun (.50) fire.
-
Almost all fighter had bullet proof glass I think, atleast in the later parts of the war although not very thick all around the cockpit. Would be nice to see the dammage more (like holes etc) but would also be nice to have it more realisticly modelled without the area based DM.
-
Not sure, but I think only the front windscreen was intended to
deflect bullets. It was inch or 2 thick. I think the rest of the canopy was not feasible to make bullet proof due to the fackt
that in WW2, bullet proofing was a matter of mass and thickness,
rather than advanced polymers. At least thats the way it
seems in the WW2 movies.
I would like to see bloody canopys as a damage effect and a
sound wav file for a cockpit hit.

yes i`m quite sure some planes did in fact have bullet proof glass but some did not, like the early model spitfire, i have actuall photo`s of some pilots injured (too bad i don`t have a scanner )
but what i really meant was that if the glass did in fact take a hit
(bullet proof or not) it did in fact cause damage and visibilty problems!!!
would be really cool if AH added that in the next patches!!!
